Laver Cup 2022: Both Federer and Nadal agrees to team up for the next edition

Laver Cup 2022, which will be hosted in London in September, will witness tennis luminaries Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal reunite for Team Europe. The duo will compete against Team World in the fifth edition of the tournament. It was founded by Federer's management business Team 8 and is named after Australian tennis icon Rod Laver.

The tournament organisers announced the news in a press release issued on Thursday.

In their words, "Tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have confirmed they will be teaming up later this year for the fifth edition of the Laver Cup. It is to be held at The O2 in London from September 23-25, 2022. Both players will represent Team Europe as they take on Team World in a bid to retain the Laver Cup for a fifth successive time under the watchful eye of captain Bjorn Borg".

In Team Europe, Federer and Nadal will reunite for the third time. They had played a doubles match together during the 2017 tournament in Prague. Whereas, they beat Americans Sam Querrey and Jack Sock in three sets.

The reaction of the two legends

Nadal is ecstatic to play alongside the Swiss legend, whom he regards as his best buddy. Furthermore, the Spaniard eclipsed the Swiss's record for most Grand Slam victories when he won his 21st at the recently concluded Australian Open 2022. In his words "I suggested Roger we should play doubles together in London, and he seems keen. So now, we need to persuade our captain Bjorn! Roger has been a huge part of my career, a big rival, and a true friend. To be part of Team Europe together is great. If we're able to possibly share the court one more time as a doubles pairing, then this would be an extraordinary experience for us both at this stage in our careers."

Meanwhile, Roger Federer, who was one among the first sportsmen to congratulate his great opponent, is overjoyed to join him in London for the Laver Cup 2022. He stated, "I'm looking forward to getting back into competition later this year. Laver Cup is very much part of my plan. Rafa is an incredible person and an inspiration to me and countless others worldwide. After the Laver Cup in Boston last year, he messaged me on social media, suggesting we play doubles in London. I am definitely up for a Laver Cup 'Fedal' comeback!"

The event will start its reigning from September 23 to 25 at the O2 Arena. It also hosted the ATP Finals for the last time in 2020 at the end of a 12-year run. Nonetheless, the Laver Cup 2022 will excite spectators who will be enthralled by long time adversaries reuniting again as teammates.
