Tiafoe made several simple mistakes that third-seeded Alcaraz took full advantage of. Alcaraz won a 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win at Flushing Meadows on Friday night. He is entering the finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
"We are in a semi-final at a Grand Slam and we have to give everything we have inside, we have to fight until the last ball," Alcaraz said in an on-court interview.
Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud will play the final
This win puts Alcaraz on his way to become the world number one player at the age of 19. But he will have to face a tough challenge from Ruud, who himself will rise to the top of the world rankings if he wins the title. Earlier, world No. 7 Ruud continued his momentum with a 55-shot winning point in the first set to beat Karen Khachanov of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the semi-finals.
Norway's 23-year-old Ruud entered the final of a Grand Slam event for the second time in a year. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open in June. Ruud will also become the world's number one player if he manages to win the title at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.
