Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz defeated 26th seed Dan Evans 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the US Open 2023 third-round match by scoring points at crucial moments. Alcaraz did not appear tense at any point in the match and in the meantime, he got full support from the spectators.
For a place in the US Open 2023 quarterfinals, Alcaraz will have to face 22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi. World number 61 Arnaldi entered the fourth round after defeating British 16th seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Alcaraz, looking to become the first man to successfully defend the title since Roger Federer in 2008. The Spaniard kept Evans on the back foot with his booming forehand while delighting the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd with several of his signature forehand drop shots. Alcaraz also conjured one of the shots of the tournament to clinch a decisive break in the fourth set. He curled a logic-defying forehand up the line past Evans for a 4-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Russia's 2021 US Open champion and third seed Daniil Medvedev also made it safely into the last 16 in a late-night 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) victory over Argentina's Sebastian Baez. Medvedev will play Alex de Minaur in the fourth round. The Australian recorded a straightforward 6-1 6-3 6-2 victory over Chile's Nicolas Jarry in one hour and 44 minutes. In men's singles fourth-round matches to be held on Monday, eighth seed Andrey Rublev will face Britain's Jack Draper. While sixth seed Jannik Sinner will face 12th seed Alexander Zverev.

In women's singles, Jessica Pegula also advanced to the US Open 2023 fourth round. She will face compatriot Madison Keys in the pre-quarterfinal. Second seed Aryna Sabalenka has also reached the pre-quarterfinals where she will face 13th seed Daria Kasatkina. At the same time, fifth seed Ons Jabeur also managed to enter the pre-quarterfinal. Her next match will be against 23rd seed Qinwen Zheng.
