Defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek was out of the US Open 2023 tournament with a shock loss to Jelena Ostapenko 3-6 6-3 6-1. After that, Swiatek will lose her number one ranking and Aryna Sabalenka will become the world's top player for the first time.

If there was anyone who had the potential to topple Swiatek in New York, it was Jelena, who earned her fourth win in a row against Swiatek on Monday. Jelena retains her reign against Swiatek. Moreover, this is the eighth consecutive year that the defending champion has not been able to reach the US Open finals. Serena Williams was the last female player to defend her title. She had won three consecutive trophies between 2012 and 2014.

At the beginning of the match, Swiatek won the first set against the 2017 French Open winner and it seemed that she would easily make it to the last 8. However, after this Jelena made a strong comeback and won the remaining two sets and won the match. Before this match, Swiatek had won only one set in three matches against Jelena, but all three of these matches took place before Swiatek became the world number one female player. In such a situation, Swiatek was confident that she could win this match.

The world's top player made a great start and took the lead. At 5-3, Jelena tried to make a comeback, but Swiatek easily won the first set. After this Jelena returned to form and won the second set 6-3. After that, Jelena's confidence returned and Swiatek started fearing defeat. Taking advantage of this, Jelena won the last set 6-1. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff became her country's youngest player to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the second time since Serena Williams in more than two decades. Nineteen-year-old Gauff defeated former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki 33, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She will now face 20th-seeded 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek.

In the men's category, Novak Djokovic also made it to the US Open 2023 last eight. Meanwhile, 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic defeated qualifier Borna Gojo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. He will now face ninth seed Taylor Fritz of America. Fritz defeated qualifier Dominic Stephan Stricker of Switzerland 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. This will be Djokovic's 13th US Open quarterfinal and Fritz's first. Djokovic has a 7-0 record against him. 23-time Grand Slam winner is set to replace Carlos Alcaraz at number one in the next ATP rankings.

Players who won the tournament multiple times

Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Naomi Osaka are some of the players who have won the Australian Open multiple times.

In 2018, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki won her first Grand Slam title, defeating Romania's Simona Halep in the final. 

Wozniacki had previously been the runner-up at the tournament in 2011 and 2014. 

Serena Williams, who is widely considered one of the greatest female players of all time, won the Australian Open in 2017 and 2015.

Madison Keys won Australian Open 2025 title

Meanwhile, Madison Keys of America won her first-ever Grand Slam title by becoming the champion in the women's singles event of the Australian Open 2025. 

In the title match, Keys defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. 

Keys is the second-oldest woman to claim her first Australian Open singles title in the Open era after China’s Li Na, who was 31 when she triumphed at Melbourne Park in 2014.

Aged 23 years 163 days, Sinner is also the youngest man to win multiple Australian Open titles since Jim Courier in 1992-93.

Djokovic won the most titles

Over the last decade, the tournament has been dominated by Novak Djokovic who has won the tournament ten times in this period (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023).

The only other players to win the tournament in this time are Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. 

Djokovic's record in the tournament is impressive, with his ten wins coming in a consecutive period of 11 years.

He has been able to defeat some of the greatest players in the world, such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, in the final of the tournament.

Djokovic also has two hat-tricks of Australian Open titles, once between 2011-2013 and then doing an encore from 2019-2021.

The Serbian’s first Australian Open crown came in 2008, when he came from a set down to beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

Djokovic has beaten Andy Murray in as many as four Australian Open finals while he has also beaten Rafael Nadal in two finals.

Roger Federer won the title twice in last decade 

On the other hand, Roger has won the Australian Open twice in the last decade, in 2017 and 2018. 

He has been a finalist in the tournament five times in this period, showing his consistency at the tournament. 

While Stan Wawrinka has won the Australian Open once, in 2014. He defeated Rafael Nadal in the final, who was the defending champion at the time. 

This win was a major upset and Wawrinka proved that he is capable of winning the biggest tournaments in the world.

Garbine Muguruza defeated Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0 to clinch the 2017 Wimbledon women's singles championship, the second major title of her career. 7. 2021 Wimbledon Championships Winner- Ash Barty

Ashleigh Barty claimed her first Wimbledon title - and second singles Grand Slam crown, beating Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-7 (7-4) 6-3 in a rollercoaster women's singles final. Barty, who claimed a first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros two years ago, was the first Australian to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish since her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley won the second of two Wimbledon titles in 1980. 8. 2022 Wimbledon Championships winner- Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina became the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles championship with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory against No.3 Ons Jabeur.  After sealing her first championship point with a service winner, Rybakina celebrated the 1-hour, 48-minute win with barely a fist pump. 9. 2023 Wimbledon Championships winner- Markéta Vondroušová

Markéta Vondroušová made history as the first unseeded player to win the ladies singles championship at Wimbledon in a stunning 6-4, 6-4 upset over the No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur, who was the runner-up for a second straight year. The 24-year-old lefty joins two other Czech-born left-handers, Martina Navratilova and Petra Kvitová to take home the Wimbledon title.

10. 2024 Wimbledon Championships winner- Barbora Krejčíková

Barbora Krejcikova is the Wimbledon ladies' singles champion after the 31st seed earned an impressive 6-2 2-6 6-4 win over Jasmine Paolini to claim the title for the first time.
