Tajinderpal Singh Toor has won the gold medal in the shot put at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023. Tajinder, who holds the national record in the outdoor shot put, also performed brilliantly in the indoor competition. In the ongoing competition in Astana, Kazakhstan, Toor clocked his best indoor throw of 19.49m to win the gold medal on Friday.

Earlier, Tajinderpal had won the Asian Games gold medal in 2018. He is the 2019 outdoor Asian champion and won the silver medal in the previous edition of the championships in Tehran in 2018 with a throw of 19.18m.
On Friday, Toor fouled in his first attempt but threw 19.49m in his third and fifth attempts to win his first gold at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023. Meanwhile, Karanveer Singh was the only second athlete to cross the 19m mark. He finished second with a best throw of 19.37m. While Ivan Ivanov of Kazakhstan captured the bronze medal with a throw of 18.10.
On the other hand, Praveen Chitravel, India's national triple-jump champion won the silver medal with a jump of 16.98 meters at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023. This is a new national indoor record. Olympian Fang Yaoqing of China won the gold with a jump of 17.20m. While Yu Gyumin of South Korea won the bronze with a jump of 16.73m. While India's Arun AB finished 12th among 15 competitors with a jump of 14.12m.
Swapna Barman, who won a gold medal in the heptathlon at the Asian Games, won a silver medal in the women's pentathlon event. She shot a total of 4,119 points to set another new national indoor record. She topped the 60 m hurdles in 8.64 seconds. Swapna also finished second in the high jump with a jump of 1.75 m and second in the long jump with a jump of 5.91 m, shot put with a jump of 12.13 m. While India's Sowmiya Murugan finished eighth with 3654 points at the at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023. India's Jeswin Aldrin stormed into the men's long jump final with a new indoor national record of 7.93m. He broke the previous national record of 7.92 m held by Murali Sreeshankar and Kumaravel Prem Kumar.

However, Muhammed Anees Yahiya finished ninth with a best jump of 7.48m and failed to make it to Sunday's final of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023, which features eight men. In the women's 60m hurdles, India's indoor national record holder Jyothi Yarraji finished 10th in the 60m sprint heats with a timing of 7.47s. In the women's 60m event, Archana Suseentran reached the women's final by finishing fifth with a timing of 7.42 seconds. But she missed out on a medal. She finished fourth (7.39 s) behind Valentin Vanesa Lonteng of Indonesia. Vanesa completed her race in 7.37 seconds.
Jyothi will compete in the women's 60m hurdles, where she holds the national record. While Amlan Borgohain (men's 60m) and Shaili Singh (women's long jump) will also participate. The Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 will conclude on Sunday.
