MI vs KKR: Venkatesh Iyer's ton goes in vain as Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets

Mumbai Indians secured back-to-back wins as they after a five-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2023 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. MI didn't had a great start to the campaign but it looks like they are slowly improving. Chasing a target of 186, Rohit Sharma, who came in as an Impact Substitute, gave Mumbai a good start with Ishan Kishan, who showed aggression with the bat. Later, Tilak Verma & Surya Kumar Yadav's partnership made the chase easy as Tim David drew the full stop with a cameo. Venkatesh Iyer's maiden ton went in vain after a brilliant chase from Mumbai's batters. Read the match report of the MI vs KKR clash and share your thoughts in the comments.

MI vs KKR: IPL 2023 Match Report

Venkatesh Iyer managed to control the situation after a poor start from KKR

KKR had a poor start as both openers, Gurbaz & Jagadeessan were sent home for 8 & 0. Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla & Cameron Green dismissed the KKR openers. Earliar, debutant Arjun Tendulkar started the proceedings with a 2-over spell for Mumbai Indians. Venkatesh Iyer fought alone right from the start & that has been the story of Kolkata Knight Riders this season. Individual performances have shown them the path to victory. Skipper Nitish Rana couldn't do much for the team as he returned after scoring only five runs. Shardul Thakur looked decent but he too was sent home for a low 13 runs inning.

Although KKR were loosing wickets in regular intervals, Venky Iyer didn't give the opportunity to the opposition bowlers to restrict the run rate. Iyer dominated the bowlers and in a pitch and ground like Wankhede, it was his moment. He lived through the moments and scored an absolutely blistering hundred in just 49 deliveries. He became the second batter in the history of KKR to score a century in IPL. Bredon McCullum was the first batter to score a century & it was also the first-ever match of IPL, in 2008 against RCB.

Riley Meredith removed Venkatesh Iyer as he played a reverse scoop straight to Duan Jansen at short third man. The batter fell after an inning to remember (104 off 51). Andre Russell played a little cameo of 21*(11) and KKR reached the total of 185/6 after the end of 20 overs.

MI vs KKR: Match Report

Ishan Kishan & Rohit Sharma gave an explosive start to Mumbai Indians

Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma got Mumbai Indians (MI) off to an explosive start after coming down to chase the target of 186 runs. Rohit Sharma was not in the starting XI but he got introduced as an impact player in place of Riley Meredith. The pair added 65 together before Suyash Sharma removed Rohit for 20(13). Ishan Kishan who was failing and struggling, started the chase with a storm. He scored 58 runs in just 25 deliveries with 50 runs of those coming as boundaries (5 fours & 5 sixes). Mumbai reached 72 runs after the end of the powerplay. Ishan was cleaned up by Varun Chakravarthy for 58(25) at a score of 87.

Surya Kumar found his form back | Tilak Verma's consistent performance | Tim David's cameo helped Mumbai to complete the chase successfully

Surya Kumar Yadav & Tilak Verma construct a partnership of 60 runs in 38 deliveries and almost secured the match with it. Inform Young batter Tilak once again showed his class with an important inning of 30 runs in 25 deliveries. Surya Kumar Yadav finally get his form back after a run drought. He scored 43 runs in 25 deliveries with 4 boundaries & 3 sixes. Shardul Thakur removed him from the crease.

It was too late for Kolkata as the MI top order did the job very nicely. Tim David played an effective cameo of 24* of 13 and Mumbai successfully chased the total of 186 runs by 5 wickets & 14 balls to spare. Kolkata Knight Riders faced two consecutive losses while Mumbai won their second straight game of IPL 2023.

Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian spinner took a dig at the Australian cricket team remembering the horrific umpiring during the 2007/08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the Hindi commentary stint on Day 2 of the Pink Ball test at Adelaide, Harbhajan Singh did not waste the opportunity to criticise the umpiring Indian cricket faced in Down Under during that series.

Australia won the 2007/08 Border-Gavaskar Series by 2-1 in the four-test match series. However, the umpiring of Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson was highlighted throughout the series, especially during the Sydney test.

The Aussies outplayed India in the first test at Melbourne where Matthew Hayden scored a sublime ton in the first inning. They won the test match by 337 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

But, the Indian team bounced back with a solid in the second test in Sydney. However, despite a brilliant show by the Indian batters and bowlers, India lost by 122 runs, especially due to dreadful umpiring by Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson.

Ricky Ponting suggesting the upmires that the catch taken by Micheal Clark was clean.

First, Ricky Ponting had nicked off a delivery down the leg side and despite a big sound, Benson did not give him out. Later, Sourav Ganguly's edge was not taken cleanly and umpire Mark Benson gave that out despite the replay showing the opposite.

Andrew Symonds, who was the player of the match in the second test, was clearly caught behind by MS Dhoni off Ishant Sharma's bowling but was not given out.  MS Dhoni stumped out Symonds from Anil Kumble's bowling, but Steve Bucknor did not even bother to check the stumping with the third umpire.

The umpiring was so bad that Indian Express reported the match "India caught Benson, bowled Bucknor."

While remembering all these decisions, Harbhajan Singh did not hold himself by mentioning that Steve Bucknor made his debut for Australia in that test and he was the 12th man for Australia in that test match.

Despite going down, India won the third test by 72 runs in Brisbane. However, India could not draw the series as the final test of the series at Adelaide was drawn.
