Brighton vs Man United: Match Preview

Brighton & Hove Albion have cruised through the FA Cup thus far, scoring five goals twice while beating Liverpool in the fourth round. On the other hand, Manchester United reached the semi-finals by clinching four back-to-back 3-1 wins, with Everton, Reading, West Ham United, and Fulham falling prey at their hands.

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 22, 2023

But the two teams have blown hot and cold, as far as their recent form is concerned. Brighton & Hove Albion last won back-to-back matches over a month ago. On the other hand, Manchester United ended a four-game unbeaten run by losing 3-0 to Sevilla on Thursday to crash out of the UEFA Europa League.

Brighton and Manchester United have already clashed once this season, with the Seagulls beating the Red Devils 2-1 at Old Trafford in August.

Team News:

Brighton:

Robert De Zerbi has a few injury issues to contend with. Exciting young striker Evan Ferguson and defender Joel Veltman have both been sidelined for a few weeks, meaning Pascal Gross may play at right-back with Danny Welbeck up front.

— Brighton & Hove Albion (@OfficialBHAFC) April 22, 2023

Jason Steele will be assessed after missing the win at Chelsea, but the likes of Adam Lallana, Tariq Lamptey and Jeremy Sarmiento remain absent.

There could be a significant start for young Julio Enciso, who scored the winner over the Blues last time out.

Man United:

Ten Hag will also miss many of his key players. Lisandro Martinez, Donny van de Beek, Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton, Phil Jones, and Alejandro Garnacho are all out, whereas given that he is recovering from a knock, Scott McTominay might not be rushed into this fixture.

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 22, 2023

With both first-choice central defenders out injured, the old duo of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are likely to be back. Casemiro and Christian Erikson could form a midfield pivot, while Anthony Martial could play up front with Marcus Rashford on the right flank.

Brighton vs Man United: Head to Head:

Manchester United holds the upper hand when it comes to head-to-head records. These two teams have met 29 times previously, where the Red Devils have won 19 games. Brighton has won only five games, while the other five matches ended in draws.

The last meeting, which was back in August in the Premier League, resulted in a 2-1 win for Brighton. Pascal Gross scored a brace for the Seagulls, whereas for ten Hag's side, Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister netted an own goal.

Predicted Line-ups:

Brighton (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gross, Colwill, Dunk, Estupinan; Mac Allister, Caicedo; March, Enciso, Mitoma; Welbeck.

Man United (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Weghorst.

BHA vs MU: Fantasy XI

Sanchez;Colwill, Shaw, Dunk, Casemiro, Eriksen; Mac Allister, Fernandes, Rashford, Mitoma;Antony.

Javier Saviola's transfer to FC Barcelona from River Plate was the record fee for any teenager till it was later broken by Wayne Rooney. After scoring 24 goals in 41 matches, besides his 11 assists for River Plate, while winning the Argentine league in consecutive years, Saviola became the star FC Barcelona were looking for.

However, the transfer did not work that well for both him and the club as he was loaned out many times and went to play for Real Madrid in future as well. Saviola was recently the assistant manager of the Barcelona U19 team as well.

Manchester United records that may never be broken

  • 87 years of having Academy graduates in the squad: Dating back to 30th October 1937, Manchester United have had an academy graduate in every single matchday squad since a staggering run of 87 years.
  • Fewest goals conceded at home in a single season: Manchester United incredibly conceded just four goals at Old Trafford throughout the 1994/95 campaign, which also happened to be the final 42-game season.
  • Longest run without conceding a goal (1,113 minutes): The 2008/09 season saw Manchester United fare slightly better than the aforementioned 1994/95 campaign, and they even had another dizzying defensive record to match. Between November 15th and February 18th, Edwin van Der Sar managed to keep 14 consecutive clean sheets, setting a record for the longest run without conceding a goal - a total of 1,113 minutes, which still stands today.
  • Trick of league titles (twice): Pep Guardiola and Manchester City may have become the first side to win four consecutive top-flight titles, but their neighbours still hold an almighty feat when it comes to winning the league trophy on the bounce. In the years between 1998 and 2001, and then again between 2006 and 2009, Manchester United achieved a three-peat of league titles on two separate occasions.
  • Invincible away from home: Manchester United’s covid-stricken 2020/21 campaign saw them set a new record for the longest unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League.
  • League victory with the fewest points: Title winners now must aspire to hit at least 90 points or more if they are to clinch the league, but the 1996/97 campaign saw United win with a mere 75 points.
  • Most Premier League titles - 13: Manchester United have lifted 13 Premier League titles, which is five more than the next-nearest Manchester City who are slowly but surely catching up to their neighbours.
  • Longest unbeaten run by an English club in the UEFA Champions League: Although another of their eternal rivals Liverpool are the most successful English side in Europe, Manchester United still hold the longest unbeaten run in the continent’s elite club competition. From 2007 to 2009 - a period in which they lifted the Champions League and reached another final, United went 25 games unbeaten.
  • Never lost a home game when leading at halftime since 1984: Manchester United have managed to keep an astonishing home record intact since 1984. When leading at half-time at Old Trafford, they have not gone on to lose, a record that has stood since a defeat to Ipswich on May 7th 1984.
