IPL 2021 Points Table: The battle for the top four continues

MI vs KKR has always been a one-sided match in IPL history. However, this time KKR was coming from our massive win against RCB while Mumbai Indians faced a tough defeat against Chennai. So this has to be the game up for grab for KKR.

Quinton De Kock and Rohit Sharma had a solid start to the opening partnership. Quinton looked quite impressive against the fast bowlers. Lockie Ferguson, Andre Russell, and Prasidh Krishna all went for runs as Captain Morgan look for options. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine provided that option for Morgan. Sunil grabs the wicket of Rohit Sharma as KKR looked at the money with spinners. Quinton, who was hitting the ball quite well till then found it hard to score against spinners.

As both, the spinners finished their quota of overs, Morgan had to bring back his pacers into action. Krishna was brought back and he delivered a solid delivery to get the wicket of Surya Kumar Yadav. Mumbai was 89/2 after 12.1 overs. Ishan Kishan came in at number four but never looked at ease against the pace of Lockie Ferguson. He went for 14 off 13 deliveries.

After that Mumbai could not get oof to any sort of momentum they would have liked. However, Kieron Pollard tried to knock a few out of the ground but eventually got run out after scoring 21 off 15 balls. Mumbai finished with a below-average score of 155.

The attacing chase from Kolkata :

KKR has tried to bring the Brandon McCullum type of game in the second leg. The good news is that it has worked for them till now. However, the new kid, Venkatesh Iyer has brought some flair to KKR's batting. Meantime, Subhuman Gill has tried to whack anything that has to offer. Gill flicked one out of the boundary to start the inning. Both Boult and Adam Milne proved too expensive for Rohit and Mumbai.

Rohit brought his main man back in action and he delivered a wicket for him. Jasprit got the better of Gill but already the score that time was 40 after 3 overs. Rahul Tripathi then joined Iyer and he too started playing with freedom.

Tripathi started sitting the ball with ease and out of the park. Meantime, Iyer kept on his powerful shots to Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya. Iyer crossed his fifty in 25 balls and Rahul did it in 29 balls. Eventually, Iyer was clean bowled by Bumrah but the game was done and dusted. Morgan came in and tried to finish the match as early as possible. However, he was caught in the deep trying to hit a six.

Nitish Rana came in and finished the game along with Tripathi in just 15.1 overs with seven wickets in hand. KKR finally broke the Mumbai jinx as Tripathi shined for them as he scored 74 runs off just 42 balls.

Cricket facts: Every ODI captain of India and their records (men’s)

A total of 27 players have captained the Indian ODI Cricket team. The very first ODI captain of the Indian cricket team was Ajit Wadekar. He captained the ODI team in 1974 and played just 2 matches as captain. Unfortunately, India lost both of them. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma are among the most successful Indian captains.

In any sport, including cricket, captaincy is perhaps the most important role that influences the overall performance of the entire team. Here is the cricket facts of every ODI captain of Indian Men's Cricket team and their records.

Cricket facts: Every ODI captain of India and their records (men’s)

First ODI captain

It all started in the year 1974 when India played their first ODI match against England. Ajit Wadekar, who had earlier been a successful captain for India in Tests, was named captain of India's first ODI team.

Wadekar played an amazing knock of 67 runs, only to end up on the losing side. He couldn't do well in the next match and eventually retired right after the series.

Wadekar was followed by Srinivasraghavan Venkataraghavan, who holds the remarkable record of captaining India in their first-ever ODI World Cup. He captained India in 7 matches and managed to win only one of those, against East Africa. His spin-bowling partner, Bishen Singh Bedi, then captained India in 4 matches, of which India lost 3. Gundappa Vishwanath also captained India in a solitary ODI match in 1980, which didn't go their way.

India's ODI skipper in the 1980s

The earliest glory to India's ODI set-up came during the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. Gavaskar took up the captaincy in 1980, 9 years after making his debut for the Indian team.

Of all the cricketers who had captained India in ODIs till then, Gavaskar had the highest win percentage (40%), which he had notched up after winning 14 out of 37 matches. That was also the highest number of matches ever captained by any single cricketer for India in ODIs, till then.

Then came Kapil Dev, who took the reins of captaincy from Gavaskar in 1982. Within just one year of Dev's captaincy, India managed to pull off the unthinkable by defeating all the big guns of world cricket and claiming India's first-ever World Cup in 1983.

Before the World Cup, he had also led India to their first-ever ODI win against two-time World Champions, the West Indies. Dev continued to captain India for a decade, the most by any player till then, and notched up a then-highest win percentage of 54.16. He captained India in 74 ODIs, out of which India won 39.

Azharuddin-Tendulkar era

Following Kapil Dev, wicketkeeper-batter Syed Kirmani and all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath captained India in 1 match each. Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth then went on to captain India in 11, 18 and 13 ODIs respectively, but India attained a stable phase in 1989 with Mohammad Azharuddin holding the reins of the team. He continued to lead India for 10 years, captaining the team in 174 matches, of which India won 90.

Sachin Tendulkar's era coincided with that of Azharuddin, as he took up the leadership role in the year 1996 and led India in 73 matches throughout a period of 3 years. Under Sachin, India managed to win 23 matches.

Ganguly-Dhoni era

Saurav Ganguly took charge of the team at a time when it was going through a tough phase following the allegations of match-fixing. He revived India's fortunes by introducing the growth of future greats of Indian cricket, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and one of India's most successful captains, MS Dhoni.

He developed one of India's finest teams that played fearless cricket. Ganguly led India to the final of the 2002 Champions Trophy.

Rahul Dravid captained India irregularly for a few years before taking it up full-time from Saurav Ganguly in 2005. Dravid finished with a decent win percentage of 56 before meeting a disastrous end in the form of the 2007 ICC World Cup debacle. He captained India in 79 matches, of which the team won 42.

MS Dhoni then led India through one of their greatest phases, as under him, India won one ICC World Cup and one Champions Trophy. He captained India in a record 200 ODIs, the highest by anyone to date. Of those, India managed to win 110 matches, with a win percentage of 59.52 under Dhoni's captaincy.

Kohli-Rohit era

Two of the greatest captains of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have put up exceptional shows as skippers of the Indian team. Although unable to win an ICC Trophy, Virat Kohli boasts of the highest win percentage among Indian ODI captains with more than 50 matches under their belt. Captaining India in 95 matches, Kohli has a win tally of 65, thus making for an effective win percentage of 70.43.

Rohit Sharma first captained India in Kohli's absence in the year 2017 and managed to win 42 out of the total 56 ODIs that the team has played in his captaincy. Rohit Sharma failed to lift the coveted World Cup for the third time in 2023.

Rohit Sharma's Bronco Test not take place in Bengaluru, know the reason

Indian team's opening batsman Rohit Sharma is very eager to return to international cricket. For this, he is working hard on the field. Last week, he passed the Yo-Yo test at the BCCI Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.

During this time, apart from him, Shubman Gill and many other players had given this test. After this test, Rohit Sharma's Bronco Test was also to be done, but this test did not take place. Team India's strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux has come up with the Bronco test. However, this test has not started yet.

Rohit did not undergo a Bronco Test

According to reports, on August 31, many players including Rohit Sharma underwent Yo-Yo test. Rohit has passed it. He proved his fitness. During this time he was supposed to undergo a Bronco test, but this test has not been implemented by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yet. Therefore, Rohit did not have to give this test.

According to reports, this test can be held in Dubai before the Asia Cup. Team India will leave for Dubai on the morning of September 4 and will hold its first session at the ICC Academy on September 5.

So if BCCI wants to conduct a Bronco test, it can be in Dubai. However, it is not confirmed yet. That is why Rohit Sharma did not undergo a Bronco test.

"It could happen when the squad assembles in Dubai for the Asia Cup. The team will start leaving late tonight (early morning of September 4) and have their first session at the ICC Academy on September 5. So if the management and the S&C want to do a Bronco assessment, it could happen in Dubai, if it happens at all," BCCI's Center of Excellence said.

Rohit Sharma may return on Australia tour

Rohit Sharma, who has retired from T20I and Test cricket, has been away from international cricket for a long time. He last played the final match of the Champions Trophy on 9 March.

In this match, Team India defeated New Zealand and won the Champions Trophy title. Since then, Rohit and Virat Kohli are away from international cricket. These two players may return to the three-match ODI series to be held in Australia next month. For this, both these players are sweating it out on the field.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma had expressed his desire to play in the ODI series against Australia A which is coming on a tour to India.

Bronco Test is primarily used in rugby where an individual has to complete a sequence of shuttle runs. From time to time, the BCCI makes changes to the set of tests used to measure players' fitness.

While fitness tests are done for all BCCI-contracted players, India's former Strength & Conditioning coach Soham Desai revealed that those tests didn't always form a selection criterion. It isn't yet known if the Bronco Test will become a selection criterion.

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

Over the years India is blessed to have got some big hitters in their line up who are capable of clearing any boundary in the world. In this article we will take a look at those batters with most sixes for India in T20Is.

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

Cricket today is almost entirely a batsman's game. Flat pitches, small boundaries and bigger bats have tilted the game heavily in favor of the batsmen. The bowlers have got nowhere to hide and, the advent of T20s, where the batsmen go after them from the first ball itself have made it even more difficult.

The T20 format has brought about a revolution where the bowlers are more than grateful to keep the run rate down, rather than to take wickets. India made a wonderful foray into the shortest format of the game, winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Over the years India is blessed to have got some big hitters in their line up who are capable of clearing any boundary in the world.

In this article we will take a look at those batters with most sixes for India in T20Is.

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

5. Hardik Pandya | 95

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

Hardik Pandya debuted in T20I cricket in 2016 and swiftly established himself as a key member of India's preferred playing eleven, serving as a seam-bowling all-rounder. His T20I career reached its peak in 2024, marked by outstanding all-round performances during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, helping India clinch the title. In terms of batting, Pandya has struck 95 sixes across 90 T20I innings.

Pandya has been included in the Men in Blue's 15-member squad for this year's Asia Cup. If Pandya manages to hit five more maximums in the Asia Cup, then he will go on to surpass KL Rahul's tally of 99 sixes in the shortest format. This will see the all-rounder become the Indian player with the fourth-most sixes in T20Is.

4. KL Rahul | 99

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

KL Rahul, who was once a consistent member of the T20I squad now finds himself out of favour in the T20I setup. Between 2016 and 2022, he played in 72 T20I matches and mostly batted in the top three.

He hit 99 sixes in 68 T20I innings. Following the T20 World Cup 2022, he was excluded from the shortest format due to his outdated approach to T20 cricket, as he did not improve his intent and strike rate.

3. Virat Kohli | 124

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

The Run Machine Virat Kohli has hit 124 sixes in 117 T20I innings for India. He is one of the most consistent players in the Indian team, with an average of 48.69. He made his T20I debut for India in 2010 and since then he has been a cornerstone of India's batting. Kohli also recorded 4,188 runs in T20I format, which included 38 fifties.

“King Kohli” was part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in June 2024. After winning the trophy, Kohli announced his retirement from the format.

2. Suryakumar Yadav | 146*

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

Yet another batsman who has made six-hitting look extremely easy is India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. Despite making his T20I debut in March 2021 with a match against England, the elegant middle-order batter has already launched 146 maximums in just 79 innings for Team India.

Having the ability to hit sixes at all parts of the ground with relative ease makes Yadav, a.k.a SKY, draw a comparison with South Africa’s great AB De Villiers who was called Mr. 360 in cricket. His centuries have also come against big teams like England, South Africa, and New Zealand apart from Sri Lanka. He has hit the most number of T20I sixes against West Indies (35).

1. Rohit Sharma | 205

Most Sixes for India in T20Is

Former Indian T20I captain Rohit Sharma hit the most sixes for India in T20Is, having hit 205 sixes in 159 games he played. He made his debut for India in the 2007 T20 World Cup against South Africa. However, he failed to cement his place in the team. The turnaround came in the 2013 Champions Trophy when MS Dhoni promoted him up the order to open the batting with Shikhar Dhawan.

The mighty Australians have been Rohit's favourite opponent in this format against whom he has hit 29 sixes in 23 matches with Bangladesh being the second, conceding 22 sixes off his willow.
