India is in Group A along with Asian champions Qatar, Kuwait and Afghanistan. The top two teams of the group will advance to the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The top two teams from each will also secure a place for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

The Indian team has not yet been able to reach the third round of the AFC FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team's impressive performance this year and the changed format have raised the expectations of coach Igor Stimac. Given the tough competition in Group A, a solid start to the campaign will be important for the Indian team. India is the higher-ranked team in this encounter, but Kuwait proved in the SAFF Championship that they can give the Blue Tigers a fight after playing two draws in the competition.
