The Indian assistant coach, Gawli called Naorem Mahesh Singh as the "future of Indian football", after he scored one goal and assisted one for captain Sunil Chhetri's goal against Nepal.

Naorem Mahesh Singh has caught the eye of fans and critics after his highly impressive Indian Super League season for East Bengal. Naorem has scored two goals and seven assists in nineteen matches.

He also created twenty seven chances and 602 passes during the 2022-23 season for East Bengal, that shows a very impressive campaign as a whole.

Naorem Mahesh Singh began his career in his home state of Manipur with Birchandra Memorial Sporting Club. He soon joined the youth side of Shillong Lajong FC and played for them in the Shillong Premier League. Ahead to the 2018–19 season, Naorem was promoted to the senior team and made his debut against Aizawl FC in the Hero I-League.

He scored a brace as Shillong Lajong won 2–1. The forward signed for Kerala Blasters FC ahead of the 2020-21 Hero ISL season. After no opportunities, he joined SC East Bengal on loan ahead of the 2021-22 season.

On 4 August 2022, Kerala Blasters announced the transfer of Mahesh to East Bengal for an undisclosed transfer fee. On 18 November 2022, he scored against Odisha at the Salt Lake Stadium in a 2–4 loss for East Bengal. He bragged man of the match against Jamshedpur on 27 November 2022 after becoming the first Indian player to get three assists in a single Indian Super League game.

Calling him the "Future of Indian football" makes a lot of sense as Naorem's Hero Super Cup showing was specially impressive with three goals in the appearances. His highly productive 2022-23 season has also produced honours as he was part of the national team that has won the Tri-Nations Series and the Intercontinental Cup. He will now be aiming to win the SAFF Championship 2023.
