It was a must win game for Real Madrid to stay close to FC Barcelona in the points table. But, Girona's disciplined defense did not allow that. 

Madrid players were not clinical in the final third, and despite creating many chances, they could not find the back of the net except for when Fede Valverde's powerful shot was not handed away by Girona goalkeeper, Gazzaniga.

However. Girona responded very well and quickly as Thomas Lemar scored a stunner from outside the box to make the score line equal. 

Real Madrid have now gone three consecutive games without any win and will surely be under pressure when they travel to Munich to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final. 

They have the players but have not been clinical enough to find the back of the net.

Six minutes have been added to the full time.

There was a discussion if the there should be a VAR check done on for a potential penalty. However, the referee has denied that.

Yellow card for Rincon, for a foul on Vinicius Jr.

Mbappe goes down inside the box. No penalty signal from the referee straightaway. 

Mbappe cuts inside quickly and from the left of the box, he wanted to go for the far post with a left-footed attempt. 

However, it went straight to Gazzaniga.

Another missed chance from Mbappe. Griona risked it at the back and that opened the door for Mbappe, who could not latch on to it.

After Mbappe missed his chance at the center of the box, Camavinga missed the target with a shot from outside the box.

Finally, Valverde does the job for Real Madrid. 

A thunderbolt from 20 yards and Gazzaniga could not handle the pace. Not sure what the goalkeeper wanted to do but he was not in a position to make the save although it was straight to him.

Does not matter for Real Madrid. They will take the goal. 

Do not know why Mbappe did not shoot in the first place after being in a shooting zone. He choose to back pass to Vinicius, who played back to him. 

Mbappe found Jude on the right, whose timid shot went straight to Gazzaniga.

Witsel during the break said that they would be love to be more proactive in the final third. Let's see if they want to do that.

Real Madrid start the second half.

The players are coming out of the tunnel. Looks like there will not be any change. 

Real Madrid had some openings but a disciplined Girona defense and saves from Gazzaniga kept the scoreline 0-0 after the halftime. 

Girona also had got a few good chances but could not convert them. 

Surely the speed of the game will be higher in the second half from Real Madrid. Let's see if they will prevail or Girona can surprise the giants.

Another build up led to a chance for Echeverri to be on target from edge of the box. 

However, after a slip, he missed the target

Vinicius misses a sitter of a chance as Carvajal's cross was headed towards Vinicius by Mbappe. However, Vinicius could not time his header and missed the target. 

In the replays it was quite evident that Martinez did not throw his elbow and it was accidental. Garcia is also good now.

Yellow card for Mbappe for a foul on Frances. Mbappe threw his elbow at his face after failing to win the ball back.

Another attempt from Vinicius Jr., from the top edge of the box, on the left. However his attempt at the near post went straight to Gazzaniga.

Carvajal with the cross from the right and it allowed Valverde go for the curling shot. However, Gazzaniga dived to his left to get a hand to it and hand Real Madrid their 4th corner.

As I was saying Girona need to come out of the shackle and they did come out. 

A good buildup from the visitors and that led captain Martinez have a go at the goal. He missed the target by few inches. 

Brahim Diaz with the ball again from the right. He lobbed in the right place for Jude to come from behind and deflect the ball form center of the box. 

However, he missed the target by a whisker. Girona needs to get out of this shackle, otherwise a Real Madrid goal is in the corner. 

Camavinga and Vinicius linked up at the edge of the box before Vini's weak shot went straight to Gazzaniga.

First solid attack from the the visitors. 

Ounahi's right-footed shot from the edge of the box was saved by Lunin. Girona will look to be solid in defense and score in the minimum chances they would get.

Momentum with the Los Blancos. Another cross from Brahim Diaz and Mbappe was at the right place to side foot the ball inside the goal. However, Frances was there in the middle of the goal to make the block.

Brahim Diaz made the long run in the middle and then found Mbappe on the right. The French star then made a sharp entry in the box and went for the cross from the byline. However, the attempt was deflected away for a corner.

Lovely lobbed pass from Camvainga and Mbappe needed to be clinical with his first touch. However, just a little bit of push in the first touch allowed the goalkeeper to make the save.

Vinicius Jr. wins the first corner of the match for Real Madrid. 

Rudiger is not in the lineup tonight and that means Asencio will have to play his role. Girona's first attack had him running on the byline.

Portu and Juan Carlos are already out of action due to long-term ACL injuries. Along with them, Donny van de Beek is also out with an Achilles injury. Paulo Gazzaniga will continue between the goal as Marc-André ter Stegen is still in rehab, nursing his hamstring injury.

Stiker Vladyslav Vanat, who has the scored 9 goals for them in the season, will also miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. Abel Ruiz will replace him in the XI.

For the Los Blancos, Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo remain out of the team due to long-term injuries. Along with them, Franco Mastantuono will miss the match due to suspension. Young Víctor Valdepenas is also doudtful dur to injury.

However, the good news for them is that, Jude Bellingham and Eder Militao, who made their return from injuries in the Champions League fixtue against FC Bayern Munich will be rearing to featurer in the starting XI. 

Eduardo Camavinga will aslo start, as confirmed by head coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
