Mumbai City FC won their first match of the Durand Cup 2023 by 3-1 against Kolkata maiden giants Mohammedan Sporting Club at Kishore Bharati Stadium in Kolkata. Mumbai brought their full-strength squad for the ongoing Durand Cup with one goal in mind, to win the trophy. On the other hand, Mohammedan Sporting was missing Benston Barretto, their prime striker.

First half: Mohammedan Sporting vs Mumbai City FC

With Chhangte, Mehtab, Vipin Singh, Ralte and Rahul Bheke in the team, Desmond Buckingham had the services of the best Indian players. Mumbai City FC pressed high from the start of the game and that resulted in a goal within the first fifteen minutes of the match. It was Rostyn John Griffiths in the 12th minute who headed in the first goal for the ISL powerhouse. It was Stewart who found Griffiths from the corner. And, it was quite obvious, there will be more goals in this match.

In the 14th minute, Pereyra Diaz could have made it 2-0 but his flying header was cleared by Joseph Adjei. But, Diaz did not miss it a second time in the 24th minute when he tapped in from a rebound shot from Alberto Ripoll. Ripoll's shot was first saved by Jongte, but Diaz was there to make it 2-0 for the visitors. In the 35th minute, Chhangte made it 3-0 for Mumbai City FC as he netted the pass from Vipin Singh from the left. Vipin's run from the left side was a sight to watch even for the Mohammedan fans present at the ground.

But, Mohammedan kept on fighting as they made it 3-1 before the first half. David Lalhlansanga received an easy header from a cross from Samad who received the ball from a short corner. Mohammedan Sporting surely left the ground with the confidence to make a comeback.

Second half: Mohammedan Sporting vs Mumbai City FC

The start for the Mohammedan was not good in the second half as Mumbai City FC had the chance to increase the lead. Vipin Singh missed an easy chance from Channgte's cross in the 51' minute. A good save by the MSC goalkeeper as well.

Mohammedan Sporting could have a comeback in the match but their Argentine forward missed a huge chance to disappoint the crowd present at the ground. David's cross was received by Alexis but he could not transform that into a goal.

In the 69th minute, Vipin Singh had another chance to make it 4-1 but he missed another chance while hitting the bar this time. In the last 20 minutes, Mohammedan looked like being in the game, but could not transform them into goals.
