SAFF Championship 2023: Kuwait vs Bangladesh Match Report

First half:

Kuwait were the favourites before coming into the game but Bangladesh started the match with great intensity. They almost got the lead in the 2nd minute of the game when Rakib’s brilliant cross found Morsalin who missed the opportunity to score the opener. Rakib was looking dangerous as he provided some beautiful balls from the wing and also found himself near the goal in some moments. Bangladesh got their chances but didn’t capitalize on that. Kuwait started slowly but managed to back themselves into the match and started testing out Bangladesh’s goalkeeper. The first half ended 0-0 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore.

Second half:

Kuwait looked more lively in the second half. They continuously threatened Bangladesh’s backline but they also looked strong at the back. Kuwait didn’t find the opening to go past them and get the lead. Kuwait took more than 15 shots to score the goal but didn’t succeed. Bangladesh had clear instructions as they decided to sit back and tried to hit the opposition on the counter. Both teams made some moves and the fresh legs were doing the trick but still, the goal didn’t come after the end of the ninety minutes.

Extra Time:

Kuwait’s players showed desperation, the hunger for victory and the moment finally came for them. After a boring start in the first half of the extra time, Abdullah Ammar Mohammad Abdullah Al Buloushi gave the deserving lead to Kuwait. The second half was more boring as Bangladesh didn’t even threaten them and after 120 minutes of football, Kuwait came out as the winner and they qualified for the final of the SAFF Championship 2023.

“Disappointed but proud. This is standard Bangladesh football should be at. We should never go below this level. We have the talent to give fights to the top teams. The defensive line was absolutely superb. There was no gap between the midfield and the defensive line. This is what kept us in the game. There is no individual in this team. This is a team performance,” the Bangladesh coach said after the match.

“I am not satisfied with the team’s performance. The energy was down. And, we need to face this. It had already been told that it would be a tough game. We were not up to the mark. I am not surprised by the way Bangladesh played. Every team has good coaches, good players. Nothing is easy in football,” Kuwait Coach Rui Bento said after the match.
