Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023: India ends with 8 medals along with Jyothi Yarraji's national record

India's Jyothi Yarraji and Jeswin Aldrin on Sunday won silver medals in women's 60m hurdles and men's long jump respectively and set a national record at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 in  Astana, Kazakhstan.

India ended the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 with eight medals, one gold, six silver, and one bronze, thanks to two medals on the final day of the competition. Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the only gold medal for India in the men's shot put category.

Jyothi Yarraji clocked 8.13 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than her previous best. Yarraji, who also holds the national record in the outdoor women's 100m hurdles, topped the qualifying round. She clocked with a timing of 8.16 seconds on Saturday. Jyothi created India's national record in women's 60m hurdles for the fifth time since January at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023. While India's Jeswin Aldrin won the silver medal in the men's long jump. He set a new national indoor record of 7.97m. He broke his own national record of 7.93m, which he accomplished in the qualification round on Friday.

With an impressive 7.97m on his second attempt, Jeswin Aldrin took an early lead in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 finals. However, Aldrin fouled on his next three attempts. He allowed Lin Yu Tang of Chinese Taipei to take the lead with an effort of 8.02 m. However, Aldrin had to settle for the silver medal after a jump of 7.82 on his final attempt.

Meanwhile, Japan's Masumi Aoki, who made it to the final after finishing eighth in the qualification with 8.51 s, won the gold medal in 8.01 s. China's Chen Jiamin finished third in 8.15 seconds.

At the same time, India's U20 World Championships silver medalist Shaili Singh finished sixth in the women's long jump event. She finished with a personal best of 6.27m in her third attempt. Darya Reznichenko of Uzbekistan won the bronze medal with a jump of 6.37m. While women's high jumper Abhinaya Shetty finished seventh in the eighth women's final with a best jump of 1.75m.

Later in the day, India's national record holder in the men's pole vault, Siva Subramani cleared 5.15m in his second attempt. But he was unable to go further. Prashant Kanhiya finished with NM (no points) after failing to clear his first 4.80m challenge. High jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare finished sixth in the final with a jump of 2.20 meters.

Though the double-time Olympic medalist looked disappointed and frustrated after a few foul throws to start with, his fourth year in in top two of every tournament he participated in continued.

Wrestling | Antim Panghal's campaign ends

Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil beat Indian wrestler Antim Panghal 10-0 in the women’s 53kg freestyle round of 16 bout.

 

The Turkish wrestler, however, crashed out in the quarter-final against Annika Wendle of Germany, who secured a victory by fall.

 

Antim, as a result, will not feature in the repechage round, ending her Paris 2024 campaign.

Indian women's javelin thrower, Annu rani did not breach the qualification standard of 62.00m or finish at least among the top 12 athletes overall.

 

In her three attempts, Annu logged 55.81m, 53.22m and 53.55m at the Stade de France, resulting in a 15th-placed finish in Group A.

 

Annu will not feature in the women’s javelin throw final at Paris 2024.
