Marketa Vondrousova knocks Naomi Osaka out of Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Marketa Vondrousova of Team Czech Republic proceeds to quarter-finals with surprise 6-1; 6-4 win over four-time Grand Slam winner. The 2019 French Open runner-up won 6-1 6-4 in an hour and eight minutes and will now face either Spain's Paula Badosa or Nadia Podoroska of Argentina.

The First Set:

Meanwhile, at Ariake Tennis Park heavy rain suspended play on the outside courts. As a result, the roof was in operation on Centre Court. The Czech lefthander didn't allow Naomi to settle down as she boasted her second serve and broke the opening game. The home favourite had two points to break straight back but Vondrousova saved them both. The mentality was just incomparable as she saved the second breakpoint with an ace, before going into a 2-0 lead.

A couple of superb backhands saw the world number 42 into a 3-0 lead after just nine minutes. Meanwhile, the scoreline became 4-0 within a blink of an eye. Moreover, Naomi Osaka was clearly struggling to get to grips with her opponent's lefty serve. Although Osaka saved three break points before finally getting on the board, Vondrousova did manage to break for a third time to take the first set 6-1 in just 24 minutes.

The Second Set:

However, the story of the second set was not similar as Naomi Osaka showed her quality and broke at the very first game. Osaka could not continue in the same vein as the second serve remained vulnerable and a double fault handed back the break at the end of a seven-minute-long fourth game to make it 2-2. Vondrousova later saved two break points with two trademark drop shots and then led 5-4 to leave Osaka serving to stay in the tournament.

Marketa had two match points, but Osaka saved the first with a crunching forehand winner before the Czech netted a backhand. She soon had a third chance to complete victory and she made it count. Marketa beat Osaka 6-4 in her own backyard and nullified her chances of winning Gold once and for all.

3. 2018 US Open Champion | Naomi Osaka

In a breakout performance at the 2018 US Open, Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 to become Japan's first-ever tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title. She lost only one set during the tournament, to Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round.

4. 2019 US Open Champion | Bianca Andreescu

Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu won her first Grand Slam trophy at the 2019 US Open. She defeated 23-time winner Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5. Andreescu became the first Canadian, as well as the first player born in the 2000s, to win a major singles title. 

In addition, Bianca was the youngest person since Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2004 to win a major singles title, and the first woman to win the US Open on her main draw debut.

Bianca also became the first Canadian to reach the semifinals in the tournament since Carling Bassett-Seguso in 1984 and she was also the first Canadian woman to reach the final in any major since Eugenie Bouchard in the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.

5. 2020 US Open Champion | Naomi Osaka

Japan's Naomi Osaka won her second US Open singles title in just three years at the 2020 US Open, defeating Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Osaka also became the first woman since Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario in 1994 to win the US Open after dropping the first set. It was also her third major title overall.

Osaka became the first player from an Asian country (excluding Russia) to win three major singles titles, the first player since Jennifer Capriati to win three such titles in three attempts.

6. 2021 US Open Champion | Emma Raducanu

It was a battle between teenage upstarts Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez at the 2021 US Open. British qualifier Raducanu defeated Fernandez in the final, 6-4, 6-3, to win her first Grand Slam title. she became the first British woman to win a singles major since Virginia Wade at the 1977 Wimbledon Championships, and the second player to win the US Open on her debut after Bianca Andreescu in 2019.

7. 2022 US Open Champion | Iga Świątek 

In the 2022 US Open women's final, Iga Świątek battled past Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) for her second Grand Slam win of the season. With this win, Swiatek became the first woman to win seven titles in one year since Serena Williams in 2014. The world No1 also matched a Serena Williams record by claiming her tenth straight finals victory.

8. 2023 US Open Champion | Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff stopped Aryna Sabalenka's juggernaut in the US Open 2023 final to earn her maiden Grand Slam title. With this triumph, she emerged as the first American player to secure a US Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. Gauff also became the youngest American to win the US Open women's singles title since 17-year-old Serena Williams did it in 1999.

Markéta Vondroušová made history as the first unseeded player to win the ladies singles championship at Wimbledon in a stunning 6-4, 6-4 upset over the No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur, who was the runner-up for a second straight year.

• First Indian to win Olympic medal in athletics: At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Neeraj Chopra produced a historic performance in the men's javelin throw event. Neeraj won the gold medal in the final with a throw of 87.58m, giving India its first Olympic medal in athletics. With this win, Neeraj Chopra also became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track and field event at the Olympics.
• First Indian to win silver at World Athletics Championships: Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won a historic silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon. He recorded a throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt to claim the second spot. • First Indian World Record holder in track & field: Neeraj Chopra Threw 86.48m at the junior championships in Poland to win the title. With this, he set the new under-20 world record, beating the 84.69m mark established by the previous holder, Latvia's Zigismunds Sirmais. Neeraj’s 86.48m attempt at Bydgoszcz still stands as both the U20 world record as well as the U20 Asian record in the javelin throw.
• Indian national javelin throw record holder: Neeraj Chopra’s best attempt to date came at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 in Sweden on June 30, 2022, where he managed his personal best of 89.94m to establish the new national record.
• First Indian to win javelin throw gold at Asian Games: Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian javelin thrower to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Before him, Gurtej Singh was the only men’s javelin thrower from the country to win a medal – bronze at the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games. Neeraj threw  88.06m to claim the 2018 Asian Games title.
• First Indian to win a Diamond League meet: Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to win a Diamond League meet after he topped the field in Lausanne in 2022. With a depleted field that had world champion Anderson Peters missing, the Indian comfortably led the charts with an 89.08m throw, in his first attempt. 
• First Indian to become Diamond League champion: Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian athlete in history to clinch the Diamond League trophy, by winning the Zurich Diamond League 2022 Final. The Indian ace recorded a best throw of 88.44m to beat Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and 2016 champion Jakub Vadlejch to the title.
• First Indian to become world champion: Neeraj Chopra became India's first world champion after he clinched the gold medal in the men's javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest with an effort of 88.17m. It was Neeraj Chopra's second straight medal at the world championships after his silver at Oregon 2022.

In the title match, Keys defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. 

Keys is the second-oldest woman to claim her first Australian Open singles title in the Open era after China’s Li Na, who was 31 when she triumphed at Melbourne Park in 2014.
