The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added cricket to a shortlist of nine sports for consideration for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, giving cricket's bid for involvement in the Olympics a big boost. Although a timeframe for this briefing has not yet been set, the LA28 organizing committee had requested the ICC to present their case last month.

A final decision regarding cricket's inclusion is anticipated during the second quarter of 2023 when the committee is slated to meet in Mumbai. Eight other sports, namely baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsports will compete for a spot, in addition to cricket.

The IOC has already approved the inclusion of 28 sports in February 2022 for inclusion in the LA Games. It committed to expanding the program at the same meeting, and in May, it devised a system for assessing "potential new sports" to determine whether they were appropriate for the LA28 Games.

The International Olympic Committee is free to add as many new sports as it wants. Although, they must meet these requirements in order to be accepted.

The ICC believes it is in a strong position. However, it is aware that the LA committee will ultimately make the final decision. One reason for its optimism is the fact that cricket has been "a star attraction", according to CEO Geoff Allardice, at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which are currently taking place in Birmingham.

"We've seen from the Commonwealth Games how much the world's best players have enjoyed playing in front of big crowds and what I'm sure will be large TV audiences."

Considering cricket's prominence in the Commonwealth nations, both ICC and the ECB pushed hard for its inclusion in CWG 2022. It has been 24 years since the game has been a part of the Commonwealth Games.

In Kuala Lumpur, in the 1998 edition, only men's cricket was played (ODI format). Meanwhile, only women's cricket is being played in ongoing CWG games, in the T20I format. A total of eight nations are vying for the gold medal in Birmingham.

The 2025 IPL season has delivered a brutal reality check for Rishabh Pant. After being picked up by LSG for 27 crore, he turned out to be the most expensive flop of this season.

Rishabh Pant was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants as the most expensive player in IPL history for ₹27 crore, which proved to be totally not worth it. He only managed to score 151 runs in 13 matches with an average of 13.73 and a strike rate barely crossing 107.

He is the lowest scorer among all the LSG batters in IPL 2025. Apart from batting performance, he also failed as a captain. The team only won 6 matches out of 13 and lost their playoffs berth under Pant's captaincy.

Pant's questionable descision-making, poor shot selections, and a complete lack of form did not justify the big price tag ahead in the auction.

Following the poor performance of Rishabh Pant, several known names have speculated about his mental state and his inability to deal pressure. The former Indian cricketer, Kris Srikkanth, also suggested that Pant should consider taking a break from his format.

The ICC has officially announced that the Final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 will be held at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on 5th July. The news was shared during a special launch event at Lord’s on 1st May.

Alongside this major reveal, it was confirmed that the matches will also be played at other popular venues across England, including Edgbaston, the Hampshire Bowl, Headingley, Old Trafford, The Oval, and the Bristol County Ground.

The tournament is set to kick off on 12th June and will run for 24 days, featuring a total of 33 matches leading up to the highly anticipated final at Lord’s. The complete match schedule is expected to be released soon.

Featuring a record 12 teams, the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be the biggest edition in the tournament’s history. With two more teams than the previous edition, fans can expect fierce competition as the world’s top sides battle it out for the title.

Qualified Teams for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026

Four additional teams will join them through the Qualifier scheduled next year.

The 12 teams will be split into two groups of six for the group stage, followed by the knockout rounds and finals.

Legacy

Moving on from the most recent edition, hosted by Bangladesh in the UAE in 2024, saw New Zealand claim their first-ever title, defeating South Africa by 32 runs in the final.

The 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup will mark the milestone 10th edition of the tournament, which began in 2009.
