Indian Wells 2022: Taylor Fritz beats Rafael Nadal to win the title

After defeating tennis ace Rafael Nadal in the Indian Wells 2022 final, Taylor Fritz won his first ATP Masters 1000 championship. The American won his second ATP Tour title with a 6-3, 7-6(5) triumph. Fritz interrupted Nadal's 20-match winning streak and prevented him from earning his 37th ATP Masters 1000 championship.

Nadal won his record-breaking 21st Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open earlier this year.

The Indian Wells 2022 final contest in a nutshell

Taylor Fritz broke Nadal twice in the first set to take a 5-1 lead. Nadal closed to 5-3 with a break, but a backhand error by Fritz handed him another break and the set. On his serve, Nadal saved a match point with a forehand winner to level the second set at 5-all. In the next game, he had two break points on Fritz's serve, but the American held for a 6-5 victory. But, to force a tiebreaker, Nadal held.

To set up Fritz's second match point, Nadal blasted two straight forehands wide. Another Nadal blunder led to the 24-year-old American's biggest win of his career, not far from his hometown of San Diego. Guy Fritz and Kathy May, Fritz's parents, are both former tour players.

"There's just no way it's real"- Taylor Fritz

"This is just one of those childhood dreams -- winning this tournament especially, Indian Wells -- this is one of those childhood dreams that you never even think could come true," an emotional Fritz said in his on-court interview. "I just keep saying: 'No, there's just no way it's real."

"I can't even begin to describe how ridiculous it is I could play like I did today. I've never experienced worse pain than that before a match. I took a couple of changes in direction with my steps and screamed. It was tough."

"We did a lot of work on the ankle leading up to the match. I went through a roller coaster of emotions thinking there's no way I can play. Then I went out hitting on the back courts and feeling happy, thinking I can play. It didn't affect me at all on court, so I couldn't be happier," he added.

With this victory, Fritz became the first American man to win Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001. He is also the youngest Indian Wells men's champion since Serbian maestro Novak Djokovic in 2011.

Nevertheless, Fritz is projected to rise from No.20 to a career-high 13th in Tuesday's ATP Tour rankings and will become the top-ranked American player whilst the Spaniard moves up to No.3.

In a windy Indian Wells 2022 final, the Polish teen sensation Iga Swiatek upset Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-4 6-1, climbing up to number two in the world rankings. Swiatek has won her last two matches against the Greek. Thus, she extended her WTA match-winning streak to 11 games.

Swiatek, 20, won her second WTA 1000 title in a succession with a powerful forehand winner. She took six of the nine breaks, including two in a one-sided second set.

With four consecutive service breaks, the final of Indian Wells 2022 got off to a rocky start. Swiatek, despite the challenging conditions, was the first to adjust, holding to go 3-2 up and broke Sakkari to take a one-set lead.

Sakkari was never able to unwind and relax during the competition. Swiatek held service to start the second set, but then it was all Swiatek as she swept the next five games.

Swiatek, who won the WTA 1000 event in Doha in February, said, "It's very crazy because I wasn't expecting to be in that place (final), especially after playing so well in the last tournament; I didn't know I could play so well for that long." "Because of the weather, it was a different contest. You always want to see the best possible final, but in these conditions, as I mentioned, it was quite difficult to play tactically as I wanted, so in the end, I was just concentrated on playing in."

Nonetheless, Swiatek will wake up on Monday as the new world number two and the first Polish player to lift the trophy, and while she acknowledges it's strange, she's already preparing her sights on Ash Barty and the top place.

"Without a doubt, Ash is one of the players I'm interested in studying," stated the champion whilst concluding.

Rafael Nadal has won all 20 of his matches so far, thanks to the year 2022. The Spaniard started his run on a good note by conquering the Melbourne summer set 1 without losing a set. Then he went on to establish his dominance over the Australian Open 2022 as he beat the recent World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev, in a riveting battle, after losing the first two sets. Also, in the process, he shattered all previous records and made history by becoming the first male player to win 21 grand slam titles.

The Spaniard began his season at the Indian Wells Masters, where he was seeded fourth, with a hard-contested victory over Sebastian Korda. He then defeated Dan Evans and Reilly Opelka to advance to the quarterfinals, where he upset Nick Kyrgios in three sets. Following that, on Saturday, Nadal had to fight for over three hours to beat newbie Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.

After a strong showing at the ATP Cup, where he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie, Taylor Fritz advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open before falling in a five-setter to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Since then, he has shown potential in tournaments such as the Dallas Open and the Mexican Open. Following that, the American arrived at Indian Wells and won his first match against Kamil Majchrzak. He then upset Jaume Munar, Alex de Minaur, and Miomir Kecmanovic to go to the semifinals for the second year in a row, where his adversary Andrey Rublev awaited from him.

To reach the final, an in-form Fritz defeated the Russian in straight sets (7-5, 6-4). In the process, he became the first American since John Isner in 2012 to reach the final of the Indian Wells Masters.

Swiatek has come a long way since she made a name for herself at the tender age of 19 by winning the French Open 2020. With the poise of a veteran and the shots of a champion, 19-year-old Iga Swiatek inscribed her name in tennis fans' hearts. Afterwards, from reaching the Semifinals of Adelaide international and the Australian Open 2022 to establishing her dominance over the Qatar Open, Swiatek has been in tremendous form. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Open after defeating Anhelina Kalinina, Clara Tauson, and former World No. 1, Angelique Kerber. The Pole won all three matches after coming back from a set down.

However, former world No. 1 Simona Halep awaited her in the semifinals, posing the tournament's toughest fight for the pole. But, that did not stop Swiatek from outlasting Halep in straight sets (7-6(8-6), 6-4) to move one step closer to the trophy.

This year, Maria Sakkari has also had some impressive results. She reached the semifinals of the WTA 1000 in Qatar and was a finalist in St. Petersburg. Previously the Greek was upset by Viktorija Golubic in the Indian Wells tournament. However, this year, she has rectified her mistakes. After an opening-round bye, the World No. 6 defeated Czech players Katerina Siniakova, Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova and Daria Saville in the second third and fourth rounds, respectively.

Afterwards, Sakkari defeated World No. 20 Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, allowing herself to compete in the semifinals against defending winner Paula Badosa. Nonetheless, the World No. 6 gave it her all in the match, defeating the Spaniard 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and advancing to the biggest final of her career so far.

Sunday's contest will be the 5th meeting between the two players. In the head-to-head, Sakkari has a 3-1 advantage over Swiatek. The last time that they encountered each other, Swiatek won the match 6-4, 6-3, in the 2022 Qatar Open.

Iga Swiatek Vs Maria Sakkari: Who Will Be The Ultimate Winner ?

This could turn out to be a super thrilling contest as both Swiatek and Sakkari have been playing at a high level over the past few weeks. Considering her current form and ranking, Swiatek will enter the match as the overwhelming favourite.

Maria Sakkari, meanwhile, is more inclined towards power tennis and she could trouble the Pole with her great serves and powerful groundstrokes. However, Swiatek's algorithm has also altered recently, and she is now playing considerably more aggressively. That would undoubtedly work in her favour. Nevertheless, if all goes well, she will be able to win the match with her powerful cross-court backhands.

Our Prediction: Iga Swiatek will win in straight sets.

Nevertheless, with Sinner out of the competition, only two of the top ten seeds remain, Rafael Nadal (4) and Andrey Rublev (7).

How does Nick Kyrgios Benefit from it?

Nick became the first quarter-finalist in the Men's singles event at Indian Wells 2022 thanks to the Italian's walkover. It is a huge boost for Kyrgios. He will have more time to recover before facing Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals.

Kyrgios began the tour as a wildcard entrant, ranked No. 132 in the world. However, he has continued to surprise with his most recent victory by defeating world No. 8 Casper Ruud. Kyrgios had not beaten a top-10 opponent in more than three years, due to injuries and the Covid-19 outbreak, which limited him to only 12 tournaments since 2020.
