New ATP Men's Tennis World Rankings, Djokovic returns to No. 1 spot

Novak Djokovic, who won a record 23rd Grand Slam title with the French Open men's singles title, has officially overtaken Carlos Alcaraz to become the world number one in the new ATP Men's Tennis World Rankings. Djokovic went into Roland Garros as the world number three, but went on to win the title by defeating Casper Ruud in the final. Meanwhile, Djokovic, 36, began his record-extending 388th week at the summit on Monday, jumping two places in the standings after his victory in Paris at the weekend.

In the latest ATP Men's Tennis World Rankings, Alcaraz is now ranked second and Daniil Medvedev is third, while Ruud remains at fourth. Rafael Nadal, who has been out of action since January due to a hip injury, slipped out of the top 100 to be ranked 136th. The 37-year-old has dropped from 15th to 136th in the ATP Men's Tennis World Rankings due to his continued absence from the tour. He underwent surgery earlier this month and is expected to be out for five months.

23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic also continued to extend his lead in the race for major titles as he became the first player to win all four major trophies (Wimbledon, US Open, French Open, Australian Open) by winning the French Open 2023 on Sunday. In addition, in the race for the Big Titles, which include Grand Slam titles, Olympic singles gold medals, the Nitto ATP Finals, and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, Djokovic has far outpaced his main competitors, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Meanwhile, in the women's rankings, Iga Swiatek retained top spot after defending her French Open title. She has held the ranking since April 2022, moving to the summit following Ash Barty's retirement. Aryna Sabalenka, who won the Australian Open in January, had the chance to overtake Swiatek but lost to Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals and remained in second place. While French Open finalist Muchova climbed from 43rd to a career-high 16th.
