The Indian men's squash team, led by veteran Saurav Ghosal, achieved a golden success in Cheongju, South Korea on Friday. They won the gold medal for the first time by defeating Kuwait 2-0 in the final of the Asian Squash Team Championships 2022.
Ramit Tandon beat Ali Aramezi 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 in straight games to give India the lead. After him, star player Saurav Ghoshal stamped the gold medal. Saurav Ghoshal defeated Ammar Altamimi 11-9, 11-2, 11-3 to give the team an unassailable lead. The third match between Abhay Singh and Falah Mohammad was not played as India took an unassailable 2-0 lead after Tandon and Ghosal's victories. The Indian team, content with silver medals on the last two occasions, did no wrong this time.
After finishing with a silver medal on the previous two occasions, Indian men justified their billing and came out victorious with a dominant performance. Earlier, India topped Pool A with victories over Qatar, Pakistan, Kuwait, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei before beating Malaysia 2-1 in the semi-finals, finished at the top of Pool A with 3-0 wins over South Korea and Chinese Taipei.
However, the women's team had to be content with the bronze medal. In the semi-finals, they were defeated by Malaysia 1-2. The women's team finished second in Pool B with two wins and one loss. The women had defeated Iran and Singapore earlier. At the same time, they had to face defeat against Hong Kong.
