Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma and Indian team will skip photoshoot in Pakistan - Sportzpoint.com

In an important development ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Team India captain Rohit Sharma may not attend the pre-tournament photoshoot and press conference in Pakistan.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will not travel to Pakistan for the opening ceremony of the event.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held from 19 February 2025 to 9 March 2025 in Pakistan and UAE.

Pakistan's matches will be held in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi, while India will play all their matches in Dubai, including the final if they qualify.

India and Pakistan will face each other on 23 February 2025 in Dubai.

India refused to attend the ceremony

The host country usually organizes an important event with the captains of all the participating teams.

It includes a photoshoot and press conference, where the captains share their thoughts on the upcoming competition.

All eight captains, including Rohit Sharma, were expected to attend the event for the Champions Trophy 2025.

According to a report, the BCCI revealed that the board has asked the ICC to shift these events from Pakistan to Dubai, which are scheduled to take place just before the start of the tournament.

"ICC has already accommodated India's request to not schedule its CT matches in Pakistan, so these are minor issues." a source told The Times of India on Tuesday.

BCCI instructed not to wear jerseys with Pakistan's name

BCCI has also instructed its players not to wear jerseys with Pakistan's name on them. The PCB is unhappy with the BCCI's action and is seeking intervention from the ICC.

Expressing concern, a PCB official accused the BCCI of bringing politics into cricket and said that the ICC will not allow it.

'BCCI is bringing politics into cricket'

A PCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IANS, "BCCI is bringing politics into cricket, which is not at all good for the game. They refused to travel Pakistan. They don't want to send their captain for the opening ceremony, now there are reports that they don't want host nation (Pakistan) name printed on their jersey. We believe that the world governing body (ICC) will not let this happen and support Pakistan."

What's the rule says

As per the rules, India not wearing the official logo of the hosts, in this case Pakistan, will be a breach of ICC's official clothing code.

The name of the host nation is usually included under the logo of the tournament on the players' jerseys, as is custom.

In previous events where India was host nation, Pakistan had carried India's name on it, including the 2016 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup.

They have also done so during the 2021 World Cup despite it being shifted to UAE due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Let's dive into the memory lane and take a look at what happened when Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Rohit Sharma played Ranji Trophy games last time.

BCCI directed seniors to play Ranji Trophy

The Indian team had to face defeat in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, in which the failure of the batsmen was also a reason.

Virat Kohli had scored only one century and one half-century in the 8 Tests played in these two series.

Apart from him, captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant had also completely failed.

After that, head coach Gautam Gambhir had said that everyone will have to play domestic cricket and then BCCI had also tightened the rules and directed senior cricketers to play Ranji Trophy.

After the end of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, the group stage matches of Ranji Trophy 2024-25 are returning again from January 23.

While players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant had agreed to play against their respective teams on January 23.

Virat had made himself unavailable citing neck pain. Due to this, questions were being raised whether Kohli will not play in the match between Delhi and Railways from January 30?

The answer to this has also been received now because Kohli has told DDCA President Rohan Jaitley that he is available for this match.

Virat Kohli, who has been playing and scoring runs continuously in every format for the last one and a half decade in international cricket, is now returning to Ranji Trophy after 4468 days.

Former Indian captain has agreed to play for his home team Delhi and will take the field in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Railways from January 30.

Earlier, Kohli had stepped on the field for Delhi in the 2012-13 season.

Kohli's last match that season was against Uttar Pradesh, when the two teams clashed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Ghaziabad between November 2 and November 5.

However, that match was not good for Kohli and his team Delhi and the team had to face defeat.

While Kohli could score only 14 runs in the first innings, he was out after scoring 43 runs in the second innings.

Incidentally, both times Kohli was dismissed by Uttar Pradesh's star fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Rishabh Pant's last Ranji match

Rishabh Pant has declared himself available for Delhi's next Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match against Saurashtra starting January 23 in Rajkot.

Pant last played a Ranji Trophy match in the 2017-2018 season.

He captained Delhi against Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy final played between 29 December 2017 and 1 January 2018 in Indore.

Pant could score only 21 and 32 runs in that match, losing his wicket to Rajneesh Gurbani and Siddhesh Neral in the two innings respectively.

Under Pant's captaincy, Delhi lost this match and Vidarbha won the Ranji Trophy title.

T20I cricket is returning to the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, where the Indian Cricket Team will face England in the opening match of a five-match T20 series.

The iconic stadium last hosted an international match on November 16, 2023, when Australia and South Africa faced off in the second semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

However, do you know when Eden Gardens last hosted a T20I match? It was when India faced West Indies in the last match of a three-match T20I series on 20 February 2022.

In the match, the Indian team defeated the Carribeans by 17 runs to manage a clean sweep, winning the series by 3-0.

Having a 2-0 lead, India already had one hand on the trophy when they faced West Indies for the last match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Kieron Pollard-captained West Indies side won the toss and elected to bowl first.

After an early departure of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad on 4 (8), Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer took a hold to rotate the innings and made a good partnership. Kishan made 34 off 31 and Iyer made 25 off 16 deliveries before going to the pavilion.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma made only 7 off 15 balls, leaving the team in trouble after he was bowled by Dominic Drakes in the 13th over. India was on 93/4 at this point.

However, Suryakumar Yadav took it all on himself and made a blazing 65 runs off just 31 deliveries, studded with one boundary and seven sixes! On the other end, Venkatesh Iyer provided solid support to Surya as he remained not out on 35 off 19, an innings with four boundaries and two over-boundaries.

India finished their innings on a safe total of 184/5, leaving a tough job for the West Indian batters.

In response, West Indies faced early calamities with both of their openers going back to the pavilion within the first three overs. Deepak Chahar took both wickets to startle the Windies innings.

Nicholas Pooran held the ground for the Caribbeans in the first down, building a composed innings of 61 off 47 balls. The rest of the team did not have much to deliver as only Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd tried to build some resistance.

Although Powell and Shepherd respectively scored 25 (14) and 29 (21); West Indies ended their innings on 167/9, handing India a victory by 17 runs.

India lifted the trophy with a clean sweep over West Indies, whereas Suryakumar Yadav was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series

This series win was visibly significant, leaving doors for the selectors to see a potential leader in Suryakumar Yadav for India in the T20Is. Suryakumar indeed has succeeded Rohit Sharma as the captain for the Indian team in T20I.

Suryakumar Yadav is set to captain India in the 5-match series against England, from January 22nd to February 2nd, 2025.
