Former India spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as Gujarat's head coach

Former Indian Spinner Ramesh Powar was roped in by GCA to appoint him as the new head coach of the Gujarat domestic cricket team.

Former Indian spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the new head coach of the Gujarat domestic cricket team as per reports in TOI. The former women's coach's selection was done by the Cricket Advisory of the Gujarat Cricket Association. It also includes former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel in the panel. Power served as the head coach of the Indian women's team from May 2021 to December 2022. During his tenure, he had a few differences with former Indian skipper Mithali Raj which made headlines.

After his role with the women's team, he was sent to the NCA as a spin bowling coach. The time was just before the T20I series against Australia in December last year. Meanwhile, Ramesh Powar is the second Mumbai cricketer to coach a domestic team this season. Sulakshan Kulkarni is coaching Tamil Nadu while Amol Mazumdar is likely to become the coach of Baroda. Powar played for India between 2004 and 2007. He played six Test matches and 31 ODIs picking up 40 international wickets in total.

"I have had an enriching experience in my stint as head coach of the senior women's team. Over the years I have worked closely with some of the stalwarts of the game and upcoming talents of the country" Powar was quoted as saying in a BCCI release. 

He also spoke about his role as a spin bowling coach that he took up at the NCA after his stint with the women's team. 

"With my new role at the NCA, I will be looking my experience over the years to help build talent for the future. I look forward to working in tandem with  VVS Laxman for the further development of the game and bench strength" Powar said. 

Under Powar, the Indian women's cricket team played in the 2022 ODI world cup. They were eliminated in the group stage with just three wins from seven games. India then went on to win the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year.
