ICC U19 World Cup is one platform that gives the young and youth to showcase their talent to the world. The tournament has always had great names like Brian Lara, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal to be the latest.

Incepted in 1988, the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 will be the 15th edition of the tournament. Before we get to see many more stars in the making, we have decided to make a current ODI playing XI for you with all the players who once were ICC U19 World Cup stars.

Openers | Rohit Sharma and Travis Head

Travis Head playing in the 2012 U19 WC.
Travis Head playing in the 2012 U19 WC.

Now, we cannot doubt this. There will be very few people who would put a finger on this decision. Rohit, the current Indian men's team captain is a no-brainer when it comes to choosing an opener for the white ball format. Travis Head, who had a terrific show in the ICC World Cup 2023, showed how lethal he could be at the top of the order. Moreover, his off-spinners can come in handy, if needed.

For your information, David Warner missed this playing XI, just because he announced his retirement from the ODI ball format in 2023.

Rohit will be the captain of this dream team as well.

Rohit played in the 2006 ICC U19 World Cup alongside Cheteshwar Pujara, who was the top scorer of that edition. On the other hand, Head featured in the 2012 U19 World Cup when Unmukt Chand's India defeated Australia in the final.

Number 3 | Virat Kohli

Another obvious choice. Probably the greatest white ball player of this generation, Virat Kohli, with 51 ODI tons, enters into any dream ODI XI. Kohli featured in the 2008 ICC U19 World Cup and took India to the title glory, beating South Africa in the final. Kohli's aggression, leadership and hunger to win had impressed one and all in the World Cup.

Number 4 | Kane Williamson

The 2008 ICC U19 World Cup probably gave the most number of modern-day stars than any other edition. Along with Kohli, players like Kane Williamson, and Steven Smith emerged as the stars of that U19 World Cup and then eventually created the "Fav Four". Williamson makes the cut for me at number four in this team. Sorry, Smith and Root fans.

Number 5 | Aiden Markram

More than 1000 runs in 2023, and in current form, probably the best middle-order batter in the world, Aiden Markram comes at number 5 on our Dream ODI XI with past ICC U19 World Cup stars.

Markram announced himself to the world after becoming the first-ever South African captain to win any ICC World Cup when he led the South African U19 team to glory in 2014. He was the player of the tournament as well in that edition. There were more options at number with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Mushfiqur Rahim and others, but, Markram goes in our list.

Number 6 | Ben Stokes

At number 6, every team loves to have a proper allrounder and Ben Stokes is just that. A match winner on his own terms, although he had some concerns with his injuries, but there is no one even close to him to make it into this team. He will be our number fifth bowling option as well.

Stokes featured in the 2010 ICC U19 World Cup along with players like Joe Root, KL Rahul, Babar Azam, Mitchell Marsh, and others.

Wicket-keeper | Jos Buttler

On current and recent form, KL Rahul was surely pushing him for the spot, but Jos Buttler made the cut with his ability to score in different parts of the ground. A versatile and adaptive player who can be used at the top of the order as well can be helpful for any team.

Just like Ben Stokes, Buttler featured in the 2010 ICC U19 World Cup.

Number 8 | Ravindra Jadeja

This was a tough choice to make whether to go with the No.1 ODI all-rounder in the world in Shaki-Al-Hasan or with Ravindra Jadeja. Both the Allorunders featured in the 2006 ICC U19 World Cup although Jadeja was in the 2008 World Cup as well.

Since Jadeja is more accustomed to batting down the order, we are going with Jadeja. But, it is a shame that we were unable to put the No.1 all-rounder in the format in our team.

Number 9 | Rashid Khan

At no 9, Rashid Khan picks himself in any ODI XI at the moment. Tough to get away, quick and a match-winner with the ball, is now capable with the bat as well, down the order. A player like Rashid Khan will be key to any team in the middle overs, as that period now seems to be the most crucial one in ODI cricket.

Rashid featured in 2016 edition of the ICC U19 World Cup.

Pacers | Kagiso Rabada and Shaheen Afridi

No doubt in this selection as well. Kagiso has become a South African modern-day great now after announcing himself in that historical 2014 ICC U19 World Cup along with Aiden Markram. His 6/25 in the semifinal dismantling of Australia, is regarded as one of the greatest spells in the ICC U19 World Cup history.

Meantime, Rabada's partner in crime in this team would be Shaheen Afridi. Tall, quick, left-arm, swings it in and is good in the death as well. You do not need anything more than that in a pacer. Shaheen emerged on the scene in the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup which saw Shubman Gill becoming the player of the tournament as well.

Players who missed out due to team combination: Steven Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, Joe Root, Mitchell Marsh, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Mushfiqur Rahim.

After winning the T20 World Cup last year, in July, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian team in place of Rahul Dravid. Since then India have won seven Tests, lost 10 and drawn two under Gautam Gambhir coaching. Again all focus has shifted to him once again after the team's embarrassing defeat in the second Test by 408 runs under his coaching as South Africa completed a 2-0 clean sweep at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. India were bowled out for 140 runs in their second innings while chasing the 548-run target. After this, India endured its second home Test series defeat under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India under Gautam Gambhir coaching

The team is in bad shape under Gambhir's coaching as India is going through a challenging transition phase, this was their fifth Test defeat at home in the last nine games. Under Gambhir, India witnessed a new low last year when they lost a Test series for the first time in 12 years after New Zealand thrashed them 3-0. The defeat was also first for India at home under new skipper Shubman Gill, who took over the captaincy role following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

India lost to Sri Lanka after 18 years

Last year, in July-August, the Indian team went on a tour of Sri Lanka. This was India's first series after Gautam Gambhir became the coach. After winning the T20 World Cup, India's youth team had reached Sri Lanka.

India then had to face 0-2 defeat in the ODI series. After 18 years, the Indian team had lost to Sri Lanka in a bilateral series.

Embarrassing defeat in front of New Zealand

When the New Zealand came to India last year, everyone must have felt in the beginning that by winning this series easily, we will present a strong claim for the World Test Championship final.

On the contrary, India lost 0-3 in this series. This was the first time since 2012 that India lost a Test series at home. New Zealand not only defeated India but also whitewashed them.

Brendon McCullum comes second in this list. The former cricketer of New Zealand made his Test debut in 2004 and played 101 matches till his retirement in 2016. McCullum is considered as one of the fittest players of the modern time. No wonders why he became the first cricketer to appear in 100 consecutive test matches since his debut. Also he is the first Kiwi cricketer to score a triple century.

3. Adam Gilchrist | 100

Most Sixes in Test Cricket

Aggression was probably Gilchrist's biggest power. He could single-handedly destroy the opposition bowling lineup with his aggressive and attacking batting. 4. Tim Southee | 98

The left-hander’s aggressive style has transformed India’s Test batting template, and this milestone further reinforces his status as one of the game’s most impactful stroke-makers. Since his debut in 2018, Pant scored 3,454 runs in 48 matches at an average of 44.28 with 8 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

8. Virender Sehwag | 91

Most Sixes in Test Cricket

In the early 2000s, the term "Aggression" justified the performance of Virender Sehwag on the field. The former Indian cricketer had some other connection with boundaries. He could stand on the pitch and smash the opponents effortlessly. Also, he scored runs at the fastest pace in Test matches. The highest score by an Indian player in Test cricket is 319 runs and the holder of this record is Virendra Sehwag.

Out of his 23 test centuries he scored 150+ runs in 13 of them. He was often considered not suitable for Test for his aggressive approach on the field, but he proofed everyone wrong and became the eighth cricketer to smash most Test sixes. In 104 test matches, he scored 91 sixes.

Most Sixes in Test Cricket

Angelo Mathews has been a pillar in Sri Lanka’s middle order, mixing solid defense with sudden aggression. His six-hitting ability often helps shift momentum in his team’s favor. Rohit combined elegance with power, and while his strike rate in Tests is quite naturally lower than in T20s or ODIs, his ability to launch spinners over midwicket or go aerial through cover remained intact right up until his retirement from the red-ball game. Rohit started his Test career in 2013 and scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57 with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. However, Rohit took retirement from the format in 2024.

He scored a handy 27 off 45 balls, thereby reaching the 4000-run milestone in the format. Second fastest player to reach the milestone

Jadeja is also the second fastest player to reach this milestone. He achieved this feat in 88 Test matches. Only Botham is ahead of him in this feat, who reached 4000 runs and 300 wickets in his 72nd Test match.

Arguably one of the greatest spinners of all time, Anil Kumble is the second Indian bowler who has the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. Anil Kumble started a career as a batsman and became one of the greatest bowlers in Indian cricket history.

Kumble certainly was one of the most iconic bowlers of all time and is still the second-fastest to reach a massive feat of 600 wickets in Test cricket. Without much turn, Kumble found success in all conditions. He played 132 Tests and took 619 wickets with the best bowling figures in an innings of 10/74. Kumble also took eight ten-wicket match hauls.

In test cricket, he became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in 2001 against Australia, which changed his career.
