Pitch Report: Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi

This will be the first match of the ongoing Champions Trophy in Rawalpindi, and the pitch is reportedly expected to be friendly for batting.

Batters may enjoy the good bounce and carry on this surface, allowing them to execute their strokes effectively. We may witness a high-scoring game.

On the bowling front, pacers will likely extract some movement early with the new ball, while spinners will come into play during the middle overs as the pitch wears down.

Bangladesh suffered a tough defeat against India in their opening game of the Champions Trophy 2025. While batting first, Bangladesh only managed to post 228 on the scorecard in 49.4 overs, losing all wickets.

Towhid Hridoy (100 off 118) and Jaker Ali (68 off 114) helped Bangladesh survive their innings, but India chased down the score in 46.3 overs, winning the game by six wickets.

The match against New Zealand is a do-or-die game for the Bangladesh cricket team, as another defeat will knock them out of the tournament.

As of now, things might look much tougher for Bangladesh, but the Bengal Tigers will boost their confidence by recalling the 9-wicket victory against the Kiwis on December 23rd, 2023.

Given the performance against India despite a defeat, the Bangladesh team is expected to field an unchanged eleven.

New Zealand commenced their Champions Trophy quest in style, dominantly beating the hosts Pakistan in the opening game in Karachi. Tom Latham (118* off 104) and Will Young (107 off 113) produced two magnificent centuries to lead the Kiwis to a mammoth total of 320/5 in 50 overs.

In response, New Zealand bowlers bowled out Pakistan on 260 in 47.2 overs. Will O'Rourke (9-0-47-3), accompanied by Mitchell Santner (10-0-66-3) and Matt Henry (7.2-1-25-2) inspired the Kiwis to win the game by 60 runs.

However, New Zealand will look to ensure their semi-final berth with a second consecutive win, not leaving any pressure before taking on India in the final group game.

With Rachin Ravindra not being fit, New Zealand will likely opt for an unchanged line-up against Bangladesh.

WI vs BAN: Bangladesh achieve this record after a historic win in the second test in Kingston - sportzpoint.com

Bangladesh scripted a history for themselves after beating West Indies in the second and last test of the WI vs BAN series by a massive 101 runs at Kingston on Tuesday. This was their first test win in West Indies since 2009. Taijul Islam (1/24 & 5/50) was the player of the match in the last test.

After getting thrashed in the first test, Bangladesh came back strong to draw the series by 1-1 and secure their third away win in 2024 - their most in a calendar year.

Except for Shadman Islam (64) and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (36), none could stand against the fiery spells of Jayden Seales (4/5) and Shamar Joseph (3/49). The West Indian bowling line up was so impeccable that Jayden Seales registered the most economical figures in Test cricket since 1978, giving away just 5 runs in 15.5 overs while taking four wickets.

Shadman and Mehidy tried their bests but could not take Bangladesh over 200 in the first inning.

Second Inning | West Indies 146

After a not-so-good show with the bat, Bangladesh made a quick turn around in the match by bundling out the home side for 146 in their first inning. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite tried to play a steady inning but after his dismissal at 39 from 129 balls, West Indian batting lineup fell like a house of cards.

From 2/94, they were bowled out for 146 in just next 20 overs. Nahid Rana was the star of the show for Bangladesh, picking up his first five-wicket haul in test cricket with a fiery 5/61 in 18 overs.

Third Inning | Bangladesh 268

Jaker Ali - WI vs BAN: Bangladesh achieve this record after a historic win in the second test in Kingston - sportzpoint.com

Despite having an important 18-run lead in the first inning, Bangladesh could not capitalize with their momentum. Mahmudul Hasan Joy returned to pavilion for a duck in the first over and Shadman Islam (46) had to solidify Bangladesh's inning again. But, after his dismissal, it was captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (42 from 39 balls) who tried his best to take the counter attack to the West Indian bowlers.

However, with Bangladesh at 193/5 at the end of Day 3's play, it was Jaker Ali who took them to a respectable score. Even after getting hit on the helmet early on Day 4, Jaker continued like a true fighter and scored his third test fifty in his third test match.

He could have got his maiden test ton, if he was not forced to go for big shots while playing with the tail. With Zaker getting out on his best test score of 91, Bangladesh finished on 268 in the second innings, giving West Indies a 287 run target.

With the series on the line, Bangladesh bowlers had to come up with a great performance on Day 4 and Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed provided them the start they were looking for. After Taijul removed a solid looking Kraigg Brathwaite (43), and followed it up with the wicket of Alick Athanaze in his next over, Bangladesh were close to a historic victory.

Post Kavem Hodge's (55) wicket, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Naihid Rana ran through the West Indian tail to register a historic win for Bangladesh.

ICC Trophies won by New Zealand

New Zealand so far has received only three ICC trophies, including its recent triumph in the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

Funnily, the first win for New Zealand was in the previous generations of fans, a generation that saw the two gorgeous captains Stephen Fleming and Saurav Ganguly.

The second win came in the next generation when the Virat Kohli-dominated Indian test side fell short to the representative of gentleness and calmness, Kane Williamson.

Here are all the three triumphs of New Zealand in the ICC tournaments.

2000: The Champions Trophy

newzealand-sportzpoint.com

Earlier known as the ICC Knockout Trophy, the Champions Trophy of 2000 was the first-ever ICC tournament that the Kiwis won.

The tournament was hosted in Kenya.

In the quarterfinals, New Zealand defeated Zimbabwe by 64 runs, advancing towards the seminal where they defeated Pakistan by 4 wickets.

Coming to bat, Pakistan posted a huge total of 252, based on Saeed Anwar's 104 runs. While chasing, even though the Black Caps trembled a bit, they managed in the middle with the likes of Roger Twose (87), Nathan Astle (49), and Craig McMillan (51*).

In the final, they met the Indians. The Men in Blue, who were enjoying an undefeated streak in the tournament, fell short of winning the final despite Ganguly's 117-run innings.

Chris Cairns' unbeaten 102 led New Zealand to 265/6, winning by four wickets and securing their maiden ICC trophy.

2021: World Test Championship

NZ-WTC-Winners-sportzpoint.com

The second big ICC tournament that New Zealand won was the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021, held in the Oval.

The rain-affected test match saw the Kiwis restricting the Indians to 217 in the first innings. Kyle Jamieson had his standout performance for New Zealand with his bowling figure looking 5/31.

New Zealand took a 32-run lead. However, in the second inning, India's batting crumbled for 170, posting a minimal 139 runs chase for New Zealand.

New Zealand achieved the target, losing 2 wickets, becoming the first ever test champion for the WTC.

2024: ICC T20 Women's World Cup

New Zealand's third ICC title came after they claimed their first Women's T20 World Cup title by beating South Africa by 32 runs in the 2024 final.

After posting 158/5, led by Amelia Kerr's 43 and Brooke Halliday's 38, New Zealand restricted South Africa to 126/9 in 20 overs. Kerr also shone with the ball, taking 3/24.

Despite Laura Wolvaardt's strong start for South Africa (33 off 27), their middle order faltered under pressure. This victory marked a remarkable turnaround for New Zealand, who entered the tournament after a 10-match losing streak.
