Lucknow Super Giants came into bat first after losing the toss. Mumbai got off to a brilliant start as Jason Behrendorff picked up the first wicket in the third over of the match. Hooda's (5) struggle continues as he once again failed to score runs. Jason gave another blow in the very next delivery by dismissing Mankad for a golden duck. De Kock counterattacked with two sixes but he too failed to construct a partnership. Eventually, he lost his wicket to the veteran Piyush Chawla in the first over after the powerplay. It was 35/2 after the end of powerplay but Piyush Chawla struck with the first delivery of his spell and converted the score into 35/3.

Marcus Stoinis and skipper Krunal Pandya took charge and reconstructed a partnership that eventually helped Lucknow to put up a good total on that surface. Stoinis smashed the bowlers right from the start while Krunal held the ground on the other end. Lucknow Super Giants scored 74 runs in the first 10 overs.

Marcus Stoinis finished the Lucknow innings with a six. Nicholas Pooran had earlier scored a boundary as Akash Madhwal conceded 15 runs in the over. Mumbai Indians started their chase brilliantly. Rohit Sharma looked in shape after a long time while Ishan Kishan continued his form with a blistering start. Rohit smashed some massive sixes which helped Mumbai to gain full control in the powerplay. On the other side, Ishan was showing his true class with some vintage cricketing shots. Mumbai Indians scored 58 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket.

Rohit Sharma swept Ravi Bishnoi for a boundary with the fine leg fielder placed inside the 30-yard circle. The bowler, however, responded well and got rid of the MI skipper in the over, who went for a lofted drive but found Deepak Hooda at the long-on in the tenth over. Rohit Sharma departed after scoring 37 runs and LSG got their much-needed breakthrough. The 90 runs partnership finally broke by the young spinner. Suryakumar Yadav joined the chase as Mumbai needed 86 runs in the last 10 overs.
