Mahela Jayawardene appointed consultant coach for Sri Lanka seniors, Under-19s and 'A' team

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as consultant coach of the national teams starting next year. Meanwhile, the country's cricket board announced on Monday. Jayawardene has also been appointed as the consultant coach of the "Under-19" and SL "A" teams. The Under-19 team will play their ICC Under-19 World Cup next year in West Indies.

Mumbai Indians coach Jayawardene will be in charge of the overall cricketing matters of the national teams. Moreover, he will provide strategic support to the players and management teams at the High-Performance Center. Jayawardene's new role is effective for a period of one year.

Despite the new appointment, Jayawardene will continue in his role with the Under-19 team. Meanwhile, they are preparing for next year's ICC Under-19 World Cup to be held in West Indies.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO De Silva said he is extreamly happy as Mahela joins the national team

"We are extremely happy that Mahela is joining the National Team for an extended role. Especially given the context that Sri Lanka has a heavy international calendar during the year 2022,"

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva said

"Mahela's contributions during the first round of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup became invaluable for the overall performances of our team in the concluded event," de Silva added.

"This is an exciting opportunity to work with the national cricketers and coaches in our various development squads, including the U19 and A-Team teams, to help us do justice to the enormous cricketing talent and potential in Sri Lanka,"

Mahela Jayawardene said

"I am very passionate about Sri Lankan cricket and believe that with a coordinated and focused team effort, taking a holistic approach working across all age groups, we can achieve consistent success in the future," Mahela added.

He said his main role will be supporting the team of national coaches and support staff in terms of preparation and strategic thinking during the coming year.

His highest score in the tournament is 89 not out, which he scored in the 2016 edition of the T20 World Cup against West Indies. In addition to his overall record, Kohli also holds the record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup tournament, having scored 319 runs in six matches during the 2014 edition.

2. Mahela Jayawardene | 1016 Runs

Following Kohli is former Sri Lanka cricket team batsman Mahela Jayawardene, who ranks second in the list of most ICC Men's T20 World Cup runs. Jayawardene participated in five editions of the tournament between 2007 and 2014, amassing 1,016 runs in 31 matches at an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 134.74. He also became the first Sri Lankan player to score a century in T20 World Cups during that tournament. 

3. Chris Gayle | 965 Runs

Caribbean batter Chris Gayle occupies the third position in this list. Gayle has smashed 965 runs in 33 matches, at an average of 34.46 and a strike rate of 142.75 with the help of 2 centuries and 7 half-centuries. He scored the first hundred in the T20 World Cup and won two world cups.

4. Rohit Sharma | 963 Runs

Most ICC Men's T20 World Cup Runs

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made 963 runs in 36 spells, which includes nine half-centuries. Hitman comes fourth on the list of most ICC Men's T20 World Cup runs. 79 is the top score for Rohit. He hasn't scored any 100s till now. Rohit has played in all the eight T20 World Cups so far.

5. Tillakaratne Dilshan | 897 Runs

Tillakaratne Dilshan played his last World Cup in the shortest format in 2016 but is still at the fifth place in the list of most runs in T20 World Cup. 7. Jos Buttler | 799 Runs

Jos Buttler led England to T20 World Cup title in 2022 and is again the captain for the 2024 edition. He is playing the event since 2012 and has scored 799 runs so far sitting at the seventh place in the list of most runs in T20 World Cup. He has smashed the runs at an average of 42.05 and a strike rate of 144.48 with a century and four fifties to his name. Apart from leading from the front with the bat, Buttler will be aiming to defend England’s title this time around. 

8. Shakib Al Hasan | 742 Runs

Most ICC Men's T20 World Cup Runs

Shakib Al Hasan is the only other player apart from Rohit Sharma to feature in all editions of T20 World Cup (including the upcoming one). He has played 36 matches for Bangladesh at the event scoring 742 runs at an average of almost 24 and a strike rate of 122.44 with three fifties. He has won a lot of matches for Bangladesh with his all-rounder skills and will be aiming to do so in what could be his last ICC event in the format.

9. AB de Villiers | 717 Runs

AB de Villiers last played the mega event in 2016 itself but it still among top 10 in the list of players with most runs in T20 World Cup . Playing for South Africa, he amassed 717 runs in 29 innings at an average of almost 30 and a strike rate of 143.4 that is impeccable for a middle-order batter. He also hit five fifties and played some memorable knocks for Proteas during his playing time.

10. Kane Williamson | 699 Runs

New Zealand have again reposed faith in Kane Williamson to lead New Zealand in the upcoming T20 World Cup edition. He also adds that on one side it is 64 meters and 63 meters on the other side and the straight boundary is 82 meters. "We are very excited for the finals. Everyone's fit and well-prepared, and a good mindset. We've seen the wickets. We've played there before, and we know quite a bit about it. We're ready to face all the challenges," Saharan said.

"We were watching the game from the sidelines. We wanted to see how the game was panning out, and how competitive it was. We wanted to gauge the kind of challenges that we'd come across. We watched the ending as well in the hotel, it was a nice game with a close finish. But we've our plans, and we'll execute them," he added.

IND U19 vs AUS U19 ICC Under 19 World Cup Final - Preview

India are playing against Australia in the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 final. The Indian team reached the final by beating South Africa after a brilliant comeback. Meanwhile, Australia dramatically beat Pakistan to qualify for the grand finale. This is the third time in the competition's history that India and Australia are playing each other. India have a 2-0 winning record vs Aussies in the final.

India, who are defending champions, have won the title the most number of times, winning in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022. On the other side, Australia have lift the title 3 times in the past.

In 2012, Unmukt Chand-led India defeated Australia in the final while in 2018, Prithvi Shaw's team emerged as winners. It will be interesting to see what happens under Uday Saharan's captaincy.

ICC Under 19 World Cup is one platform that gives the young and youth to showcase their talent to the world. The tournament has always had great names like Brian LaraVirat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal to be the latest.

The U19 Cricket World Cup is a 50-over tournament organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It was first held in Australia in 1988 named as the Youth World Cup with eight teams. Thereafter, the tournament was staged after 10 years in 1998 with 16 teams and it has been a 16-nation tournament held regularly every two years ever since.

Australia were crowned as the winner of the first-ever ICC Under-19 World Cup by defeating Pakistan in the 1988 Final. They are the only host nation to win the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

England were the winners of the second edition of the tournament in 1998. They defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the final match at Johannesburg.

The Indian cricket team is the most successful in the Under-19 World Cup, with five titles to its name. India won their first-ever Under-19 World Cup title in 2000 under the captaincy of Mohammad Kaif. They are also the defending Champions as they defeated England in the Final of 2022 U19 Cricket World Cup in West Indies.

Pakistan first won the title in 2004 and then in the next edition (2006) as well by beating India in the final by 38 runs. Pakistan are the only side to win back-to-back ICC Under 19 World Cup titles. India have the opportunity to also repeat that, as they won the 2022 edition.

South Africa won their first ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2014 by beating Pakistan in the Final while West Indies bagged their maiden title in 2016 by beating India. Bangladesh won the 2020 edition after beating India by three wickets in the final at the Senwes Park, Potchefstroom.
