Sri Lanka's middle-order batsman Angelo Mathews has become the first player in One Day International cricket to be given time out during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh match of the ICC ODI wolrd Cup 2023.
In the 38th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and put Sri Lanka to bat. Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught out on the second ball of the 24th over of the innings. After that, Angelo Mathews came to bat. His helmet was not correct and there was difficulty in wearing it. In such a situation, Mathews asked to bring another Hamlet from the pavilion, during which Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for out against him.
After that, when the 35-year-old reached the crease with the correct helmet, the umpire went to him and asked him to go back. Mathews was surprised to hear this. When he asked the umpires the reason, they came to know that he was very late in coming to the crease and he was timed out. After this there was a lot of debate between Mathews and the umpires. Mathews also spoke to the opposition captain Shakib Al Hasan, but Shakib was also not ready to withdraw his appeal. In such a situation, Mathews had to go to the pavilion without playing any ball. This was the first time in international cricket that a batsman was timed out.

What is the 'Time Out' rule?
According to Rule 40.1.1, after the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the batsman coming in must be ready to play the next ball within 3 minutes of playing the ball. If this does not happen, if the bowling team appeals then the batsman can be declared out. In this the bowler does not get credit for the wicket.
