After Kane Williamson stepped down from captaincy in December 2022, it was Tim Southee who took over as the Test captain for New Zealand. Now, its time for him to bid adieu to the role, as Tom Latham took charge as the full-time for the Kiwis.

Tim Southee has captained the team on nine previous occasions. The decision comes as an aftermath of the 2-0 series whitewash against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand will visit India for the three- match test series this month under the leadership of Latham.

New Zealand Cricket quoted Southee, "Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honour and a privilege. I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is the best for the team."

Southee debuted in 2008 and has 382 wickets in his 102 test appearances for the country.

Under his captaincy, New Zealand won six games out of the 14 games they played. They have 6 defeats and 2 draws for their name.

Southee added, "I will, as I’ve always done, continue to support my teammates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I’ll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years."

Gary Stead, New Zealand coach, heaved praises on Souhtee

He said, "Tim’s a fantastic player and a very good leader who is held in high regard by the players and support staff.

“He’s been a great servant of New Zealand Cricket over nearly 17 years playing on the international stage, and I’d like to acknowledge his humility in stepping down from the role as Test captain."
