"Find this ridiculous": Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished

Hypocrisy in cricket? Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished. Uncover why the cricketing legend is so critical of the ICC's recent actions.

"Find this ridiculous": Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished | sportzpoint.com

Recent events during the India vs England Lord's test have sparked a fierce debate over fairness. The Indian pacer, Mohammed Siraj recently incurred a 15% fine for his aggressive send-off to Ben Duckett and over-the-line celebratory actions.

In contrast, Shubman Gill's conduct at the end of Day 3, which included strong language, received no penalty or demerit points from the ICC. This clear hypocrisy in treatment has drawn sharp criticism from the former English cricketer Stuart Broad.

Stuart Broad has openly slammed the ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished. Read the full story to know what exactly happened.

The incidents: Siraj's celebration vs. Gill's unpunished behaviour

Here are the details of two separate on-field incidents, took place during the India vs England Lord's test.

Mohammed Siraj fined for Duckett send-off

In the fifth over of Day 4, the home of cricket witnessed an intense clash between both the sides, which led to excessive celebration from the Indian pacer, Mohammed Siraj.

After providing a crucial breakthrough to India by dismissing Ben Duckett, he went on to give him an aggressive in-your-face stare, followed with a visible shoulder barge, while the batter walked back to the pavilion.

This act not only put him in a ban risk, but also resulted in a 15% fine along with a demerit point. Siraj was deemed to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to "Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match."

Shubman Gill's inappropriate behaviour goes unpunished

Looking back at the end of Day 3, we witnessed something below-the-belt during the last over, where the tensions noticeably escalated between both the teams. Displeased with England's Zak Crawley, the Indian captain, Shubman Gill went up to confront about wasting excessive time.

The moment took a turn when visibly frustrated Gill, shouted at Crawley, telling him to "grow some f****** balls." Umpires immediately intervened to make things right, howsoever, the clear breach of conduct and use of foul language towards the opponent was live on television.

This incident spread in the internet like a wildfire, whereas the ICC took no action against Gill. He has so far avoided the punishment, and is likely to be that way, given that 2 days have passed since the inappropriate encounter.

Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished

The former English cricketer, Stuart Broad, has publicly criticised the ICC's recent call, highlighting the inconsistency in their decision-making process. He pointed out the double standards in their application of the Code of Conduct.

In the context of Siraj's punishment and Gill's unpunished verbal outburst, he wrote on X: "Find this ridiculous. Siraj 15% for aggressive celebration. Gill swears live on TV & carries on and what? Itโ€™s either both or neither. Players arenโ€™t and shouldnโ€™t be robots, but consistency is key"

Broad also commented on the ICC's fine system, following Jofra Archer's dismissal of Rishabh Pant on the morning of Day 5. He shared footage of the wicket, captioning it with "Worth 15%."

The third test between England and India at Lord's has been a gripping contest. After an intense Day 3, where tensions noticeably escalated between the two teams, Day 4 saw even heightened clashes.

In just the fifth over of the day, India's Mohammed Siraj struck up a sharp back-of-a-length delivery at 140 kph. Batting at 12, the English opener Ben Duckett mistimed the ball while attempting to pull from outside the off stump, which resulted in a straightforward catch for Bumrah.

What followed was an aggressive, in-your-face celebration from Siraj, involving a direct charge towards the batsman and a prolonged, intense stare. Things got even worse as the celebration involved a visible shoulder barge with Duckett.

This unexpected and fiery encounter raised concerns about a serious issue: Will Mohammed Siraj face a ban risk over his aggressive send-off and shoulder barge to Ben Duckett on Day 4 of the Lord's test? Find out what the ICC code of conduct suggests:

Is Mohammed Siraj at a bank risk over his aggressive send-off to Ben Duckett?

Mohammed Siraj faces ban risk over his aggressive send-off and shoulder barge to Ben Duckett | sportzpoint.com
Mohammed Siraj giving an intense stare during his aggressive send-off to Ben Duckett. Image | X

Mohammed Siraj provided an early breakthrough to his nation by dismissing England's explosive opener, Ben Duckett. High-stakes matches in cricket often saw intense celebration from both sides. However, Siraj's celebration involving a shoulder barge has put him under a ban and in potential trouble.

Siraj could be found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which states: "Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match."

The article "includes any language, action or gesture used by a Player and directed towards a batter upon his/her dismissal which has the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from the dismissed batter, whether or not any reaction results, or which could be considered to disparage or demean the dismissed batter, regardless of whether the batter him/herself feels disparaged or demeaned (in other words, a โ€˜send-offโ€™)"

Lines that Siraj seemed to cross with his celebration:

  • "excessive celebration directed at and in close proximity to the dismissed batter": The celebration after Duckett's dismissal involved Siraj coming within close proximity of him, while keeping his glares.
  • "verbally abusing the dismissed batter": Even though any usage of verbal abuse can't be concluded in the footage, as Siraj is probably seen yelling "come on" โ€“ this point will be a crucial one to look at and re-check.
  • "pointing or gesturing towards the pavilion": There is no evidence of this third point being involved.

Besides the mentioned article, there's also article 2.12, which states: "Without limitation, Players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another Player or Umpire. When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (i.e. intentional), reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) the force of the contact; (iii) any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made; and (iv) the person with whom contact was made."

โ€œThe game is better with the likes of Mohammed Siraj: it is an emotional game... It was actually Duckett who went towards Mohammed Siraj,โ€ said on air after Siraj's aggressive send-off and shoulder barge.

Regardless of the speculations, the match referee, Richie Richardson, has to give a close look into this matter, to confirm whether Mohammed Siraj's barge to Ben Duckett was done "deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently."

Consequences of the breach:

If found guilty of breaching what's mentioned in 2.5, Siraj will be charged with a Level 1 offence โ€“ in other words, a warning, up to two demerit points, and up to 50% of match fees.

Additionally, if the shoulder barge is proved to be deliberate, he could also be charged with a Level 2 offence, the highest sanction for which can include two suspension points, enough for him to miss a Test match.

India vs England 3rd Test, Day 1: Even Gill's "boring test match" taunt could not bring out the BazBall

England scored 251, at just 3.02 runs per over, on Day 1 of India vs England 3rd Test at Lord's. Joe Root remained unbeaten, one short of his 37th test ton.

India vs England 3rd Test, Day 1: Even Gill's "boring test match" taunt could not bring out the BazBall | sportzpoint.com

At just 3.02 runs per over, an unlikely England under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brandon McCullum were seen on Day 1 of India vs England 3rd Test at Lord's. Even Shubman Gill's taunting "boring Test cricket" comment could not bring the BazBall of the England cricket team.

England finished Day 1 with 251/4 as Joe Root remained on 99 along with a struggling yet effective Ben Stokes on 39 from 102 balls at the other end.

Indian bowlers did pretty well to restrict English batters and bowled with discipline, except for Akash Deep, who went for 4.41 runs per over on Day 1.

After the defeat at Edgbaston, England wanted a pitch that had "something in it." However, it did not look like that on Day 1. The pitch looked dry and slow, which might favour India as every day progresses.

Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first, which is very unlikely of them as they always want to chase scores in the fourth innings. But, with the dry and slow pitch in action, it might be good to bat in the third inning, rather than batting in the last inning.

Indian opening bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep did well, and it did not look like Akash Deep, who was coming from a historical 10-wicket haul, had any issues with the slope of Lord's. Oh, did I forget to mention that India had one change from Edgbaston - Jasprit Bumrah in place of Prasidh Krishna.

Nitish Kumar Reddy provided the early wickets for India

Despite a good start and a long spell from Bumrah, India had to wait till Nitish Kumar Reddy came into the bowling and struck twice in his first over to remove both the English openers. Ben Duckett (23) would consider himself unlucky to be caught down the leg side, while Zack Crawley (18) got a "spitting cobra" delivery from Reddy.

Ollie Pope would have been out first ball if Shubman Gill had caught a tough chance in the gully. But, from then on, the signals were in. The edges were not reaching the slips, and Gill once had to come so close that he wore a helmet.

The first session ended with England being on 83/2 after 25 overs.

Though Pope struggled to get going, on the other end, Joe Root was Joe Root - buying runs ball by ball, playing the way he does. Gill tried to break the partnership between Pope and Root with Bumrah in action, but that did not happen.

Meanwhile, India suffered a setback as Rishabh Pant got injured while grabbing a ball from Bumrah and had to be replaced by substitute keeper Dhruv Jurel.

The second session saw 70 runs without losing any wickets.

For India, the breakthrough finally came in the first over of the third season as Ravindra Jadeja produced an outside of Pope (44) and Jurel caught it beautifully to get England's third. Pope and Root had a 109-run partnership, which balanced the first session of the day.

Soon, Bumrah was called into action, and he rattled the stumps of Harry Brook, and everyone thought that Gill and company would have the doors open for a collapse.

Stokes plays through pain; Root closer to another ton

However, captain Ben Stokes, who has not scored a test century in the last two years, played an uncharacteristic inning to build an unbeaten 79-run partnership with Root.

Nitish Kumar Reddy nearly had Stokes out, but the DRS showed that India had to be satisfied with the Umpire's call, which was not out. Root meantime looked flawless against pace and spin.

In the final hour of the day, Stokes struggled with a groin injury and could not run, which stopped the flow of the run as well. With Joe Root on 99, and looking for his 37th test ton and 8th at Lord's, we are set for a big day tomorrow.
