Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets in the IPL 2024 after chasing down the target of 174 despite losing three wickets inside the first four overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma added a 143-run partnership for the fourth wicket to complete the chase within 17.2 overs. Surya scored a magnificent century, his second in the IPL career which saw Mumbai claim the important two points from the fixture.
Hardik Pandya scalped three wickets against SRH
Captain Hardik Pandya praised Suryakumar Yadav for putting bowlers under pressure with his counter-attacking ton after a quick loss of wickets at the start. This is Mumbai Indians' only fourth victory of the season and it didn't come easily. At the post-match presentation, Hardik said, "It is unbelievable, the best part of Suryakumar is that he puts the bowlers under pressure. It is sheer confidence, his game has changed, is one of the best batters. He can change a game differently, lucky to have him (SKY) on our side."
MI won the toss and decided to field first. SRH lost wickets at regular intervals from the beginning and were five down already at the score of only 96. It was the knocks from Travis Head (48 in 30 balls) and skipper Pat Cummins (35* in 17 balls) that took SRH to a fighting total of 173/8 in the allotted 20 overs. For Mumbai, Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla picked up three wickets each.
On Piyush Chawla's three-fer, Pandya said, "I was like Piyush Chawla had to bowl from the shorter side. He had to be accurate, the margin of errors have become smaller these days for the bowlers."
Hardik also expressed his thoughts about his bowling. "We want to focus on playing good cricket, still think we gave 10-15 runs extra. The way our batters batted was excellent. In my bowling, I like to bowl in the right areas, I bowl according to the situation. Bowled in the right areas today and it worked," he said.
In the run chase, MI lost their top order early and was hanging at 31/3. Suryakumar (102* in 51 balls) and Tilak Varma (37* in 32 balls) started attacking and guided MI to a much-needed victory with 16 balls to spare. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was top-notch in his 4-over spell, conceding only 22 runs but that wasn't enough. SKY won the 'Player of the Match' honour. Mumbai are now in the ninth spot with four wins and eight losses, giving them eight points. SRH remained in the fourth spot with six wins, five losses, and 12 points.
