The Bundesliga 2022/23 season is fast approaching. It opens on August 5th with a Friday night opener between Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich. Bayern is ten-time defending Bundesliga champions and is in relentless pursuit of extending their record. Perhaps it won't be a walk in the park for them, as the Bundesliga has its fair share of strong teams.

Germany's top flight rarely disappoints in terms of entertainment and high-scoring contests, even though the Bavarians have established a long-term monopoly.

Bundesliga 2022/23 Title Contenders:

When thinking of the potential Bundesliga 2022/23 winners, perennial German champions Bayern first springs to mind, and there is a good reason for that.

Since Jurgen Klopp navigated Borussia Dortmund to a rare Bundesliga title in 2011/12, the Bavarian heavyweights have won ten successive league crowns without breaking a sweat.

Led by new boss Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern extended their domestic supremacy in emphatic fashion last season, leaving runners-up Dortmund eight points behind.

On top of that, Robert Lewandowski & Co netted a staggering 97 goals at an average of 2.85 per game, summing up their status as Germany's supreme force in a nutshell.

Even though Lewandowski called time on his illustrious eight-year stint at the Allianz Arena to join Barcelona this summer, the Bavarians will be odds-on favourites to maintain their formidable domestic run.

Several high-profile summer additions, including Sadio Mane, Matthijs de Ligt, and Ryan Gravenberch, will provide Nagelsmann with ammunition to keep Bayern at the top of German football.

For years, Dortmund have been forced to play second fiddle to Bayern, with not even Erling Haaland managing to drive them out of the Bavarians' shadow.

Without the Norwegian goalscoring machine in the picture, new boss Edin Terzic will be in a world of trouble as he looks to cut Bayern's long-term dominance short.

A run of three runner-up finishes across the past four Bundesliga seasons suggests Die Borussen are the only viable candidate to fight Nagelsmann's side for the crown.

Unless Terzic finds a way to keep his men competitive in the Der Klassiker showpieces and prevent them from spurning points against so-called 'smaller teams,' they would have to settle for another second-place finish.

Dark Horse Contenders:

Bundesliga 2022/23: Tedesco | Sportz Point.
Dominic Tedesco (Image- Getty Images)

RB Leipzig has been regular in the Champions League since first getting promoted to the Bundesliga in 2016. The Bundesliga title has eluded them in that time despite two second-place finishes. They did win their first major trophy at the end of last season, the DFB-Pokal, to build some momentum under Domenico Tedesco.

Leipzig has an exciting young talent, Christopher Nkunku, who scored 20 Bundesliga goals last season. Andre Silva is just one year removed from a 20-goal season of his own. The pieces of a championship-level team are there but consistency has often been an issue.

Bayer Leverkusen is the only other team with shorter than +10000 odds of winning the Bundesliga 2022/23 title. There are certainly reasons to be excited about them, after finishing last season in third. Patrik Schick, who scored 24 Bundesliga goals last season, signed a contract extension to stay in Leverkusen. This is one of the youngest teams in the Bundesliga and they should certainly get better as time goes on.

Moussa Diaby tallied 13 goals and 12 assists last season and he's only 23. Florian Wirtz established himself as one of Bundesliga's best playmakers as a teenager. He's in the process of recovering from an ACL tear and he should elevate the team when he returns.

Contenders for Champions League:

The abovementioned duo headline a plethora of clubs who will likely battle it out for the four Champions League promotion spots.

During Bayern's ten-year tenure in the Bundesliga, Dortmund have only failed to qualify for Europe's most prestigious cup competition once, courtesy of an underwhelming seventh-place finish in 2014/15.

So barring some highly unexpected developments, the two should be safe and sound regarding their chances of forcing their way into the Champions League.

As ever, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig will be staking their claim for the two remaining top-four places, as was the case last season, where both achieved Champions League promotion.

While Leverkusen strolled to a respectable third-place finish, Leipzig toppled Union Berlin to the coveted fourth spot by the skin of their teeth, doing so on the final day of the season.

Domenico Tedesco's men have been relatively quiet this summer, though Christopher Nkunku's contract extension could be considered a major coup for the Red Bull outfit.

Like Leipzig, Leverkusen have been more focused on keeping hold of their star players, including Patrik Schick and Florian Wirtz, than strengthening their squad.

Despite an uneventful recruitment campaign, both sides should be able to replicate last season's feat.

European hopefuls:

Union Berlin and Freiburg defied the odds to secure promotion to the Europa League last season, leaving the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt in their wake.

On top of that, Koln, who fought tooth and nail to avoid relegation in 2020/21, earned their place in the Europa Conference League qualification play-offs.

Once again, the Bundesliga lived up to the billing as one of Europe's most unpredictable elite divisions, as further witnessed by Wolfsburg's embarrassing 12th-place finish.

Bundesliga 2022/23: Frankfurt | Sportz Point.

However, Frankfurt's morale-boosting Europa League triumph last season and Gladbach's inspiring pre-season showings indicate things could go back to 'normal' next term.

While Oliver Glasner guided Die Adler to a long-awaited continental success in his maiden season at the helm, his side ended up in a horrific 11th place last Bundesliga season.

But after acquiring the signatures of Mario Gotze and Lucas Alario and retaining the services of Filip Kostic and Rafael Santos Borre, Frankfurt will be genuine European contenders in 2022/23.

As for Gladbach, the appointment of Daniel Farke as their new chief of staff bodes well for the club's ambition to leave last season's dreadful bottom-half finish firmly behind them.

Despite losing star forward Breel Embolo to the likes of Ligue 1 powerhouse Monaco, Die Fohlen should feel safe in the hands of the former Norwich City manager.

Farke proved his managerial credentials during his four-year stint at Carrow Road, helping the Canaries book their tickets for the Premier League twice.

Given Union Berlin's performances in 2021/22, it is hard to put it past them to stage another upset this time around, especially considering they narrowly missed out on qualifying for Champions League football.

Watch out for Wolfsburg in Bundesliga 2022/23, who have recruited well this summer, adding several exciting young prospects to their pacey, juvenile squad.

Bundesliga 2022/23 Relegation candidates:

Augsburg and Stuttgart barely kept their heads afloat last season to extend their top-flight status to another campaign.

While the former finished just a point clear of the dreaded play-off relegation spot, a superior H2H record to Hertha BSC helped the latter stay safe.

If it weren't for the household German tactician Felix Magath, Die Alte Dame could have been playing in the second tier in 2022/23.

Who Will Fill the Lewandowski Void?

We're excited to announce, in our Bundesliga season preview, that there will be a new top scorer this season. Robert Lewandowski, who won the award the last five seasons, is off to La Liga. With Erling Haaland also gone, this is suddenly a very competitive race.

Patrik Schick, as Leverkusen's main man, is the favorite. The Bundesliga top scorer odds price him at +300 and he was the Bundesliga's second-leading scorer last season.

RB Leipzig's versatile Christopher Nkunku was the breakout star of the 2021-22 season and he's drawn a lot of interest from abroad. He scored 35 goals in all competitions last season and had never scored more than seven in a season previously. He sits at +450 odds and will be out to prove he's not a one-season wonder. Teammate Andre Silva, who scored 11 Bundesliga goals last season

Sadio Mane is an interesting pick. Mane has already proved himself in the toughest league in the world and Bayern Munich is without a prolific striker. He and fellow forward/winger Serge Gnabry will certainly be called upon to shoulder the goal-scoring load. Bayern have been linked to Stuttgart's Saša Kalajdžić, though. If the 6'7" striker joins Bayern.

Karim Adeyemi is a bit of a wildcard here. The 20-year-old scored for fun in the Austrian Bundesliga but playing for Borussia Dortmund will be a big step up.  Remember, Sebastien Haller is out for the foreseeable future and Donyell Malen is often unconvincing, he could get a lot of opportunities.

The Bundesliga is the top-division tournament in German football. The competition was founded in 1962, and the first season began in 1963. The Bundesliga replaced the German national championship, which was the first tournament in German football history. And since then only one club has dominated with most Bundesliga titles.

The German national championship, which was founded in 1903 and ran for 60 years, was a knockout competition contested between winners of each of the country's top regional leagues.

The founding member teams of the Bundesliga are 1860 Munich, Cologne, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Braunschweig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hertha Berlin, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe, Preußen Münster, MSV Duisburg, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, Schalke, Vfb Stuttgart and Werder Bremen.

Bayer Leverkusen became the 13th team to win the Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season.

Besides the Bundesliga, which operated in West Germany, the DDR-Oberliga was the top-level football league in Soviet-controlled East Germany. Following the reunification of Germany, the Bundesliga became the national league of the country.

The Bundesliga started as a 16-team tournament but would soon expand to 18 teams from 1965.

In a one-off event, the league played the 1991-92 season with 20 teams following the reunification, but would return to its 18-team format in the following campaign.

There have been 13 different winners of the Bundesliga since its inception in 1963.

Who won the first Bundesliga?

FC Koln, or FC Cologne in English, won the first-ever Bundesliga season in 1963-64. The Billy Goats maintained a six-point advantage over second-placed Meidericher SV (39) and scored in each of the 30 league games played in the inaugural edition.

Karl-Heinz Thielen (16 goals) and Christian Müller (15 goals) finished as the top scorers for the team in the championship-winning season.

Who has won the most Bundesliga titles?

Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga winners list with 34 titles. The Bavarians won their maiden Meisterschale in the 1968-69 season, with an eight-point cushion and legendary forward Gerd Muller contributing 30 goals. They are the most dominant German team and have won the most Bundesliga titles.

Borussia Dortmund, a 113-year-old German club, is second on the list of clubs with the most Bundesliga titles.

After Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund have won the most Bundesliga titles and have also finished second the most times in the German league.

In the pre-Bundesliga days, ‘die Schwarzgelben’ lifted three league titles – two more than Bayern.

There has always been a soft spot for Dortmund in every football fan's heart, except the fans of Bayern.

In the 2022-23 season, they were the favourites to win the titles but bottled it on the last day. Dortmund won their last Bundesliga title under Jurgen Klopp in the 2011-12 season.

Titles by years: 1994–1995; 1995–1996; 2001–2002; 2010–11; and 2011–12

3. Borussia Monchengladbach - 5 Titles

Borussia Mönchengladbach holds the third place on the list, and they have won the same number of Bundesliga titles as Borussia Dortmund.

They have finished second less as compared to Dortmund, and that's the reason why they are placed third.

Three of their five Bundesliga championships were consecutive. They won their last league title in the 1976-77 season under Udo Lattek. Monchengladbach have only ever been demoted to the Bundesliga 2 twice, in 1999 and 2007.

Titles by years: 1969–70, 1970–71, 1974–75, 1975–76, and 1976–77

4. Werder Bremen - 4 Titles

They won their last league title in the 2003-04 season under Thomas Schaaf with 74 points, and he is the longest-serving manager (14 years) of Bremen.

They share the record for most seasons played in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

Titles by years: 1964–65, 1987–88, 1992–93, 2003–04

5. Hamburger SV - 3 Titles

Hamburger SV comes fifth in this list with 3 Bundesliga titles to their name.

Their last league title came in the 1982-83 season under Ernst Happel, who won his second title with the club.

HSV have the record in German football of having won the most regional titles, having won 31 regional titles. But the regional titles do not count as a trophy or even as a title itself.

Until the 2017–18 season, HSV were the only club to have played continuously in the Bundesliga since its foundation.

Titles by years: 1978–79, 1981–82, and 1982–83

The second-leg matchdays of the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 Quarter-final ties have gifted us some memorable UCL nights through four of the best matches this season.

Aston Villa came back from trailing to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 at home, whereas Dortmund defeated Barcelona 3-1, but both sides were knocked out on aggregate.

Arsenal kept their UCL unbeaten streak against Real Madrid intact, beating them 2-1 in the second leg, advancing to the semis. Inter Milan also shared the spoils with Bayern Munich in a 2-2 draw, but sealed their passage to the semi-finals.

Playing at their home, Villa Park, Aston Villa did not get off to a good start, letting in two goals in 30 minutes, through the PSG full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.

Paris Saint-Germain dominated the first half, despite ending it at 2–1 as Youri Tielemans pulled one back. The second half, though, was a Villa fairy tale, netting two more goals from McGinn and Konsa and hunting for the third. Marco Asensio, late on the field, promptly made his mark, nearly scoring against his parent club.

Unfortunately, they never did achieve that goal they required, and PSG fired into the semis with a slender lead, but winning 5-4 on aggregate.

The Guirassy hat-trick could not keep this mercurial Borussia Dortmund side out. Even though FC Barcelona seemed all at sea, making mistake after mistake that we did not witness in last week's match, they were still able to keep them at bay.

They did not really begin to play like their own team until Pedri came onto the field in the later stages. Other notable players in this game were De Jong holding in the midfield and Szczesny playing like he’s in his prime. However, a Bensebaini own goal kept Barca on a two-goal cushion to safely guide them through to the semis.

"Remontada," a term that was heard being uttered repeatedly again and again with this Real Madrid team, mostly from Bellingham. However, Arsenal crushed their dream of a magical comeback with a 2-1 victory in the return leg at Bernabeu.

Arsenal performed fantastically, and Arteta is worthy of all the accolades for the display set out away at the Bernabéu. Rice performed masterfully; he was all over the pitch, marking every pass; no one was penetrating him.

Bukayo Saka failed to convert an early penalty due to a marvellous save from Courtois. However, he redeemed himself with the opening goal in the 65th minute, but it was canceled out after Vinicius scored the equalizer only two minutes later.

Gabriel Martinelli netted the winner in injury time, leading Arsenal to another win against Real Madrid and keeping their unbeaten record against Los Blancos in the UCL intact.

Bayern Munich played pretty much the majority of the second leg on the back foot, but Inter Milan held them to a chilling 2-2 draw at home. Lautaro Martinez had enough opportunities, showed some lovely dibbles, and obviously scored; all of these earned him the man of the match award.

Kane did everything in his power, but it was just not good enough, and it's disappointing to see this Bayern side leave, particularly because it's Müller's final Champions League campaign with the side.

It was Kane who opened the scoring, but two back-to-back strikes from Lautaro and Pavard put Inter at the top again. Eric Dier scored the equalizer from a tough angle, but the Bavarians failed to score another to equalize the tie — better to say, Inter Milan defended masterfully!

It’s all over and Inter edge through 4-3 on aggregate, after the two previous two-legged ties between these two clubs finished 3-3. Once again, it was a tight contest, with Inter trailing and then leading before Dier’s header made it 2-2 on the night. Ultimately, Pavard’s header against his old club is what separates the sides overall, and it’s the Italian side who will face Barcelona in the last four.

Bayern will be without Jamal Musiala for the rest of the season, which opens the door for Raphael Guerreiro to potentially start as the number 10 again after his impressive performance off the bench against Dortmund. Although Thomas Müller scored after being introduced from the bench last week, Guerreiro's contribution may earn him a starting spot.

Young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig will start again as Manuel Neuer's return date has been pushed back to the end of April at the earliest. The team is also facing a number of absentees in defense, with Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano, and Hiroki Ito all sidelined due to injury.

Serge Gnabry is putting pressure on Leroy Sané for a starting position after scoring off the bench in the recent draw against Dortmund. However, it is likely that coach Vincent Kompany will stick with Sané in this match, especially with Kingsley Coman also available for selection.

Inzaghi made minor rotations to his Inter team over the weekend, allowing players like Marcus Thuram, Alessandro Bastoni, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to rest in preparation for the second leg.

Mehdi Taremi has returned from a muscle injury and was on the bench for the match against Cagliari, while Kristjan Asllani will also be available again after serving a European suspension. However, both are expected to start as substitutes.

Piotr Zielinski and Denzel Dumfries remain sidelined due to injuries. Additionally, Inzaghi faces a decision at left wing-back, as Federico Dimarco has regained full fitness, but Carlos Augusto is currently playing exceptionally well.
