UEFA Champions League 2023-24: Real Madrid vs Union Berlin - Match Report

First half:

Real Madrid did what the fans were expecting them to do. They kept the possession and went into offensive mode right from the start. Union Berlin mostly relied on counters which were taken care of by Rudiger and Nacho in the defence. Joselu had two early chances when he could have given Los Blancos the lead but his headers went off the target. Real Madrid started with Modric, Cama, and Tchoumeni in the midfield with Bellingham being given offensive duties.

Union Berlin showed their defensive solidity with the ex-Juventus, Bonucci in the middle, Leite, and Doekhi on both sides to create a back three. Los Blancos couldn't open the defensive line of the German side between the lines so they went for the long balls. It couldn't help them to break the deadlock and the first half ended with a 0-0 result.

Second half:

Real Madrid went all out in the second half. We have seen time to time this to happen when the Los Blancos have clinched a victory after scoring late goals in the second half. They kept on pushing and Berlin kept on denying them from time to time. Joselu tried on a few instances to try something new but the Union Berlin keeper, Ronnow was on a different level.

Berlin kept their defensive shape well which forced the Los Blancos players to take shots from a distance. Luka Modric went very close when he took a left-footed fiery hit but Ronnow denied him with a far more better save. Bellingham, who created lots of opportunities for the Real Madrid forwards, provided a brilliant ball to Joselu who took a direct volley but it went off the target. It summed up the fortune of the forwards. The more and more time went by, Santiago Bernabéu kept on pushing to break the deadlock but Berlin did what they came to do in their inaugural Champions League night.

Urs Fischer's men really showed the world how hard it is to break their defence. Substitute Fede and Kroos brought fresh legs which caused a lot of problems but they couldn't open the defence either. But the 20-year-old Englishmen showed again why Real Madrid bought him for those huge chunks of money. Jude Bellingham scored in the 93rd minute to give Real Madrid the deserving three points from an annoying fixture. Union Berlin played with their hearts out and so did Real Madrid. They once again showed why they are 14 times champions. "It's never the end until it's end," that goes really well with the Los Blancos.
