Comparing Manchester United and Liverpool net spending since Klopp arrived, 2015

Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the powerhouses in English football both trophy-wise and financially.

Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the powerhouses in English football both trophy-wise and financially. Playing in the Premier League has given them absolute resources to spend money on players and make a competitive squad.

United are known for spending huge amounts of money, but their inconsistent transfer policy has meant that their huge squad is overpaid and underperforming.

Liverpool have leapfrogged their rivals since Klopp arrived at Anfield, in part thanks to the club's more careful transfer decisions.

Liverpool clinched the Champions League in 2018-19 with a squad that included clever acquisitions like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and then went on to finally win their first Premier League the following season.

They then suffered with injuries in 2020-21 but came storming back last season, winning the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as making it to the Champions League final and taking the Premier League race to the final day.

This summer, they have strengthened again, bringing in Darwin Nunez from Benfica as their flagship signing. But Klopp has also lost a heavy hitter in Mane.

Meanwhile, United have managed to get some considerable wages off the book in 2022, but they've also spent big money on arrivals, with £63.5million man Casemiro the latest through the door.

United have been criticised for an apparently scattergun approach to the transfer market – for example, they went after Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot before pursuing Casemiro – but new manager Erik ten Hag recently spoke about how they select transfer targets.

Ten Hag told United's official site: "It starts with the basic stuff. reliable, have drive, have the motivation – highly motivated.

"You want to fight and you bring it every day on the training pitch. You want to strengthen the squad. You are a unified club, a unified team and, most of all, you are prepared to win."

Just how Ten Hag's summer signings – Casemiro, plus Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia – perform over the full season, though, we will have to wait and see.

But what about the difference in transfer spending between United and Liverpool in recent years?

We've had a look at the figures from Transfermarkt and picked out the five biggest purchases and five biggest sales for both clubs since Klopp arrived in October 2015, as well as figured out the net spend for both clubs.

There is no assurance that he would accept the position at Real Madrid if it were offered, though, as he declined to leave his position at Bayer Leverkusen when the Liverpool position became available last year. Liverpool 'would encourage' Darwin Nunez's exit if Saudi interest renews

According to reports, Liverpool would encourage Darwin Nunez to leave the club if Saudi Arabian clubs renew their interest in the Uruguayan striker.

Liverpool 'would encourage' Darwin Nunez's exit if Saudi interest renews-sportzpoint.com

Liverpool FC is reportedly on the verge of arranging Darwin Nunez's departure from Anfield this summer if the Saudi Arabian revives its interest in the striker.

The Uruguayan striker had moved to the Reds from Portuguese giants Benfica in a deal worth up to £85 million back in the summer transfer window of 2022.

With a struggling season continuing for him at the Merseyside club, Nunez is believed to be out of new coach Arne Slot's plans and will look to rejuvenate his career in the Gulf.

Nunez's Liverpool career has been affected by difficulties, as he has found it hard to establish himself in the club throughout his early years.

In his three years at the Merseyside club, he has scored 40 goals in 136 games across all competitions, but this season has been the most disappointing so far for the 25-year-old, as he has scored just seven times across all competitions.

With the direction of new head coach Arne Slot, Nunez has found himself out of favor, another contributing factor to speculation about his future.

Renowned Football Transfer journalist Duncan Castles broke the news on the latest episode of 'The Transfers Podcast' that Liverpool would accept a big Saudi Arabian offer and would be willing to urge Nunez to leave if they come back for him. Castles stated:

Liverpool would be happy if the Saudis came in and would encourage a move for Nunez. They would like to get some kind of significant return on the initial €75 million that they paid Benfica three years ago.

“From the Saudi perspective, [Nunez] still has that ability to be a name within the Saudi game and to deliver goals with his physicality. Interestingly, I’m told that his girlfriend, Lorena Manas, who is the ex-wife of former Barcelona player Aleix Vidal, has been working with agents to explore opportunities elsewhere.

“So it looks like this is both sides pushing against the same door with Nunez, or at least Nunez’s partner, encouraging him to look for a move and Liverpool happy to sell the player with a strong, affluent potential buyer in Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly, it had been hinted that Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr had made a substantial annual deal of €35 million towards Nunez back in January, having already made an offer of £58 million for the forward.

According to reports, Nunez's girlfriend, Lorena Manas, has also been working closely with agents to look into possible transfers in mutual consent, implying a joint pressure for a potential move.

I think we had clear ideas on what we wanted to do and how we wanted to play. We tried that as much as possible. I know it is difficult when you play against a team that sits so low and is so compact.

At times the game takes you a different direction. You want to go on the ball and move around but generally, we stuck to the plan really well. We had a really good week of training, and it was a good way to start the new era.
