Football News: Turning back the clock

Last Sunday in a friendly football match Argentina faced Estonia at the El Sadar Stadium in Pamplona, Spain. Argentina managed to win the game with a score of 5-0 and dominated throughout the whole game, recording 24 goal shots, with 10 being on target, comparing to only 4 shots total recorded by the Estonian team. The Argentinian team also had an astonishing ball possession of 79%.

Star of the night was none other than Argentina's best player ever Lionel Messi, who scored all 5 goals in his own fashion. This is the first time for Lionel Messi to score 5 goals in one game for Argentina and only the second time in his career. The first time Messi scored 5 goals was in 2012 in a game where Barcelona faced Bayer Leverkusen and managed to beat them with a score of 7-1.

Last Sunday, the first goal came early in the 9^th minute when Messi scored a penalty goal, demonstrating his undoubted experience. Shortly before the first half ended, he doubled Argentina's lead with a beautiful goal from the right wing, from where he crossed the ball into the left corner.

The 3^rd goal came 2 minutes after the second half started making Messi's 56^th Hat Trick in his long career. In the 71^st minute of the game Messi demonstrated such beauty on the field, that only few players in the world can do, tricking Estonia's last defender and goalkeeper. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, he found himself in the right spot and reacted perfectly after a deflection and scored his 5^th goal of the night.  

Later the same day, football fans could witness something that they have witnessed so many times for the past 15 years. When one superstar proves legendary on the field, the other one follows. This is exactly what happened last Sunday night.

Portugal was facing their group rivals Switzerland in the Nations League group stage. Portugal managed to win the game with a score of 4-0. The star of the night was Messi's biggest rival and one of the best players to ever play the game of football, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo responded to Messi's five goals the only way he knows, and that's by scoring goals. He assisted the first goal of the game and scored 2 additional goals, putting his country at the top of a very tough group that includes Spain, Switzerland and The Czech Republic. Ronaldo's first goal of the game and Portugal's second, came in the 35^th minute by a beautiful assist by Diego Jotta. Four minutes after the second goal of the game, Ronaldo slashed his other goal and improved Portugal's lead to 3-0. In the 51^st minute, Ronaldo scored his 3^rd goal, which was disqualified by VAR because of an offside position. In the 68^th minute Portugal's Joao Cancelo scored their 4^th and final goal of the game making the final score 4-0.

Both legendary players demonstrated why they are considered to be the best football players of all time by turning back the clock and proving everyone that even at 34 and 37 years of age they can still take over and dominate the field like no other. 

Argentina's next game is going to be a friendly match this Saturday vs their biggest rival: Brazil - led by Messi's teammate Neymar. Meanwhile Portugal's next game is this Thursday. They will be playing The Czech Republic in the Nations League in a battle for the first place in their group. We cannot wait to see if Messi and Ronaldo can maintain their great form and continue to score goals and bring wins for their countries.
