Olmo’s strike put Spain 1-0 ahead in the 51st minute and they were cruising for the semifinals before Germany substitute 21-year-old Florian Wirtz scored an equalizer in the 89th minute, taking the game to extra time. Both sides had ample amount of chances throughout the ninety minutes but nothing could separate the teams.
As the match went into extra time, Merino scored a brilliant header in the 119th minute to secure victory and break the hearts of the German fans. Spain ended the game with 10 players following Carvajal's second yellow card, but they are through for the semis.
The hosts played one of their best tournaments in recent times. Their quarterfinal exit is far better in comparison to their group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They were aggressive, and relentless and played the entire 120 minutes with their head held high in pride but the late winner from Merino sent them out of the tournament.
The winner of the Portugal vs France match will face Spain in the Semi-Final.
