The Indian Men's Hockey Team showcased a fighting display in their opening match at the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation - International Tournament. However, the hosts Spain emerged victorious with a closely fought 2-1 win in Barcelona on Tuesday. Indian Men's Hockey team Captain Harmanpreet Singh's (59') goal provided a glimmer of hope for India after Pau Cunill (11') and Joaquin Menini (33') had put Spain in the lead.

India started the game aggressively, pressing high in the first quarter, but couldn't find the back of the net. As the match progressed, Spain gained momentum, resulting in Pau Cunill (11') scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh scored the lone goal for India.

In the second quarter, India focused on controlling possession and launching counterattacks to equalize, but Spain's defence held firm and the score remained 1-0 in favour of the hosts at halftime.

The third quarter saw India launch ruthless attacks and test Spain's defence repeatedly. Despite their efforts, Joaquin Menini (33') extended Spain's lead with a well-placed deflection, doubling their advantage.

In the fourth quarter, India intensified their efforts to bounce back and created scoring opportunities, but they struggled to find their first goal. On the other hand, Spain shifted to counter-attacks and won back-to-back penalty corners but failed to convert them.

In the dying minutes of the game, Captain Harmanpreet Singh (59') managed to score from a penalty corner, keeping India in contention. However, Spain held their ground and prevented India from finding another goal, ultimately winning the match 2-1.

Looking ahead, the India Men's Hockey Team will face the Netherlands in their next game on 26th July 2023 at 21:30 IST.
