In the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 Semi-Final, the Indian Women's Hockey Team put on an impressive display of skill and determination, but ultimately fell short, losing 2-2 (3-4 SO) in a thrilling match against Germany. The Indian team came into the Semi-Finals with two consecutive victories in the group stage, and they continued to show their dominance with numerous circle entries in the first quarter. A pivotal moment came when Deepika's drag-flick (14') on a penalty corner secured the lead for India.
Despite India's tight defense, Charlotte Stapenhorst (26') equalized for Germany, bringing the score to 1-1 at halftime. The third quarter saw both teams intensify their game, aiming to secure a spot in the Final and confirm their presence in the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, neither team managed to score, leaving the score at 1-1 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Deepika attempted a shot at goal, but the German goalkeeper denied it. With just over three minutes remaining, Charlotte Stapenhorst (56') scored a field goal, putting Germany in the lead. India quickly responded, with Ishika (59') levelling the score with a goal from a deflection on a penalty corner, forcing the match into a penalty shootout as the full-time score stood at 2-2.
The shootout was an intense battle between both teams as they fought to earn a spot in the Final. Sangita, Sonika, and Lalremsiami scored for India, while Captain Savita showcased brilliance in front of the goal. However, Germany held their nerves, winning 4-3 in the penalties by the narrowest of margins to advance to the Final.
Looking ahead, India is now set to face Japan in the 3rd/4th place play-off on January 19th at 4.30 pm IST. The winner of that match will earn a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
