Cricket at LA 2028 | How many teams will participate?

Earlier, the Olympic Committee had announced that there will be 6 men's and 6 women's cricket teams in the tournament. Each team will have 15 members, but the committee has not yet decided which will be the 6 teams that will qualify for the Olympics.

These matches, played in T20 format, will be held at the Fairgrounds Stadium in Pomona city, about 50 km from Los Angeles. According to the LA28 organizing committee, there will be two matches a day, although no match will be played on July 14 and 21.

Cricket will feature in Olympics after 128 years

Before this, cricket match was played only once in Olympics, when only two teams, Great Britain and France faced each other in a two-day match during the 1900 Paris Olympics. Great Britain won that match and won the gold medal. After which it became the only team that won the gold medal in cricket.

Cricket at LA 2028 | How will the tournament work?

The competition structure for cricket at the Olympics has now been agreed following meetings between the ICC, IOC and LA 2028 organisers. The six participating teams will be divided into two groups of three with each team playing each other once. Teams will then play two sides from the other pool, apart from those who were ranked in the same corresponding position.

For example, the winners of Group A will play the second and third-placed teams in Group B and vice-versa. Results from all four matches will then be used to determine final rankings with the top two sides playing in a final to decide the gold and silver medals.

The teams who finish third and fourth will play off for bronze. Medal matches will be played on 20 and 29 July with the women's and men's tournament set to run in separate slots rather than being played concurrently.

The ICC is set to discuss how teams will qualify for LA 2028 at their Annual General Meeting in Singapore, starting on 17 July. Some members want T20 rankings to determine which teams go to Los Angeles but others have expressed a preference for qualifying tournaments.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland have held talks to form a new entity called GB Cricket to oversee a team for LA.

LA 2028 Games | Key events and dates for the Indian contingent

Here’s an India-focused look at the competition calendar — with what’s changed.

Cricket

Cricket, last played at the Olympics in 1900, makes its return at LA 28 in the T20 format with separate men’s and women’s tournaments. Both Indian men’s and women’s teams will be expected to be strong contenders for medals.

  • Starts: July 12 (Day -2)
  • Medal Matches:
  • Women’s final (likely): July 20 (Day 6)
  • Men’s final: July 29 (Day 15)
  • No Matches: July 14 and 21
  • Venue: Pomona Fairgrounds (approx. 50 km from central Los Angeles)
  • Match Timings: 9:00 AM & 6:30 PM LA time (9:30 PM IST & 7:00 AM IST the next day)

Wrestling and Judo

India has won at least a medal in wrestling since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. LA Convention Center Hall No.2 will be the same venue for both wrestling and judo.

  • Judo: July 15–22 (Day 1 to Day 8)
  • Wrestling: July 24–30 (Day 10 to Day 16)

Athletics

In a historic shift, athletics will now take place in the first week instead of the second. The venue for the athletics events will be the historic LA Memorial Coliseum which will host the ceremonies as well. Athletics in the first week can benefit Indian fans as top events like javelin throw, long jump, and relay races come into early focus. With Neeraj Chopra likely leading the charge, this early scheduling offers a chance for India to build momentum from the very start.

  • Dates: July 15–24 (Day 1 to Day 10)
  • Venue: LA Memorial Coliseum
  • Marathon: July 30 (Day 16)

Archery

Archery, which traditionally begins from Day -1, will now begin on Day 6 — allowing more prep time for athletes. India has never won a medal in archery at the Olympics. However, with the addition of compound mixed-doubles events, there is hope.

  • Dates: July 20–28 (Day 6 to Day 14)
  • First Medal Match (likely): July 21 — Compound Mixed Doubles
  • Recurve Events: Follow later

Tennis

Another notable change is that tennis, which usually starts on Day 1, will now begin on July 19 (Day 5). The Men’s singles final, the marquee event of tennis at Olympics, will not collide with the men’s 100m final in athletics and other swimming finals.

  • First Medal Match: July 20 (likely Mixed Doubles)
  • Finals: July 27, 28

Boxing

No changes in schedule. Just like Paris 2024, Boxing at LA 2028 will be held across two phases and two arenas. In Paris, the medal rounds were fought at Roland Garros.

  • Preliminary Rounds: July 15–23 (Day 1 to Day 9) at Peacock Theater
  • Rest days: July 24-26
  • Medal Rounds: July 27–30 (Day 13 to Day 16) at DTLA Arena

Hockey

Hockey will begin early this time as it will start from Day -2 on July 12. This makes hockey one of the few sports to start before the Olympics are officially open. India’s men’s team is the only one that finished on the podium in both Tokyo and Paris.

  • Starts: July 12 (Day -2)
  • Medal Matches: Women: July 28, Men: July 29

Shooting

Shooting will start from the first day, raising India’s medal hopes after winning 3 medals at the Paris Games.

  • Starts: July 15 (Day 1)
  • Medal events begin right from Day 1
  • Venue: Long Beach Target Shooting Hall (Pistol and Rifle), Whittier Narrows Clay Shooting Center (Shotgun)

Badminton

There are no major changes in the badminton schedule. It was a disappointing performance by Indian shuttlers at Paris 2024 as they returned empty handed.

  • Starts: July 15 (Day 1)
  • Medal events: July 21 – July 24

Table Tennis

Table Tennis at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is set for its biggest edition yet, featuring six medal events for the first time. The competition will take place from July 15 to July 29 at LA Convention Hall 3 in the DLTA Zone, starting a day after the opening ceremony.

  • Men’s Singles
  • Women’s Singles
  • Men’s Doubles (returning to the program)
  • Women’s Doubles (returning to the program)
  • Mixed Doubles
  • Mixed Team (a new event, making its Olympic debut)

Weightlifting

Weightlifting at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will follow an almost similar schedule to Paris 2024, taking place in the second week of the Games.

At the Tokyo Olympics, the events started early and gave India a glittering start with Mirabai Chanu’s silver on Day 1. Paris 2024 brought no such joy.

  • Starts: July 25
  • Venue: Peacock Theater
  • Medal Events: July 25-29

Squash

Squash is one of the five new sports along with cricket, flag football, lacrosse and baseball/softball included at LA 2028.

Universal Squash City Center at Universal studios will be the venue for squash, which will feature two events, the men’s and women’s singles.

  • Starts: July 15 (Day 1)
  • Medal events: July 24

No major changes for other sports

Overall, the changes in the schedule at the Olympics will be interesting to watch. With swimming scheduled in the second week, July 29 (day 15) of competition will go down as one of the most memorable days in Olympic history with medals in 23 sports up for grabs.

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

LA 2028 is going to see great Olympians continue their greatness, young stars take their next steps, and entire sports leap into the spotlight.

India has already started its preparation for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. India is seeing a great performance in LA, where everyone is expecting to win more than 10 medals. The country feels optimistic with a promising lineup mixed with veterans and young guns that these young men shall not only live up but also exceed expectations when they bring laurels home to India in the LA 2028.

We have three years before the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. So, just making firm predictions who will win what is tough. So, let's just try to make a prediction of who to watch in LA 2028 from India.

Anahat Singh

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

Well, this might sound wild. But why make only the safe predictions? India expects Anahat Singh to bag the first Olympic squash medal.

Anahat Singh had already won a medal at the Asian Games at an age of fifteen. She has also quickly emerged as the best female squash player in India. What a time to come out of the shadows for a sport that will have its greatest hour ever when squash is introduced in the Olympic programme in Los Angeles.

Nothing wrong with Anahat being among the world’s best juniors. Each time she competes at a senior event, she is better. Forget Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal, and Saurav Ghosal, those legends from India might be too old to pick up a racquet and compete in Los Angeles, but Anahat can win for them all.

Anmol Kharb

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

It is not an easy job to emulate PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal. It’s also not an easy assignment to follow a huge success at such a young age with consistent performances later. Teenager Anmol Kharb found that out after she was India’s star at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in early 2024. In high-stakes clashes, she outsmarted players with higher rankings.

Till Tokyo, India had won three consecutive medals in women’s singles badminton; however, that run was stopped in Paris. Kharb possesses tremendous skill and as such, like she showed early this year, has the right attitude. All now remains is to conjure consistency. Anmol can prove to be the third woman that wins her a medal in badminton for India.

Dhiraj Bommadevara

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

The 22-year-old Bullseye archer from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, was a treat to behold at the Olympics in Paris. He finished the men’s individual archery ranking round with a total of 681 out of 720. In the team event, his superb shooting carried India to qualify for the quarterfinals. Turkey edged past Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Jadhav 6-2 in the quarters of the men’s team event.

Bommadevara made Olympic history as the first Indian archer to reach the mixed team semifinals, along with Ankita Bhakat. The duo finally finished fourth, and silver or bronze medals proved just out of reach. So, with age being his side, he is likely to put up a show at the next Olympics to bring a long due medal home. However, this time we hope he gives us a medal to celebrate at the 2028 Olympics.

Lakshya Sen

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

When Viktor Axelsen says it, how can anyone disagree? The two-time Olympic champion earmarked Lakshya Sen as one of the big contenders for the gold medal in LA after their semifinal in Paris 2024, which Axelsen won in straight games despite being given a scare in both games.

Lakshya is only 23 and has plenty of badminton ahead of him. Like in the Thomas Cup in 2022, and then the Asian Games last year before these Olympics, he has shown time and again that he has the ability to raise his level at big tournaments as well.

Bhajan Kaur

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

The upcoming star of Indian Archery, Bhajan Kaur, who in her tender age of nineteen only, marked her presence in the archery tournament. She ranked 22nd in the women’s individual ranking round with a score of 659. In the Round of 16, she faced Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia, and her exciting match went into a shoot-off.

Her Olympic journey ended there in the shoot-off; however, she did leave behind a mark as a promising name in Indian archery despite her heroic effort to come back from a facile victory from behind and force a tie. She was known for accuracy. So far, she has been going very well and she was confident of winning at international levels. Her rigorous schedule of training coupled with her recent wins have increased the expectation of a medal in the 2028 Olympics.

Reetika Hooda

Haryana’s girl, Reetika represented her state in the women’s 57kg freestyle category. She went all gung-ho. On August 10, she was knocked out of the Paris Olympics with a close loss to the top-seeded Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan at the women’s 76kg freestyle quarterfinals. On points, the match remained 1-1, but Medet Kyzy won due to the final technical point rule.

Hooda, who has emerged as one of the best athletes in Indian athletics, is getting enough attention these days. With improved personal bests and perfected technique, experts feel she would easily be at stake for a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Reetika’s journey inspires many young athletes, and her potential success in 2028 can well be a historic moment for Indian sports.

Indian Men's Hockey Team

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

There will be changes to the Indian men's hockey team between Paris and the LA Olympics. One thing that won't change is its captain. It's both scary (for the rest of the world) and reassuring (for Indians) to think that Harmanpreet Singh is still only 28 years old.

He's coach Craig Fulton's general now. He's just inspired his team to a bronze medal. The youngsters coming through are showing so much promise. Fulton will oversee those changes, but will still build his side around his captain. Much like PR Sreejesh in Paris, there is a chance that LA sees the team wanting to play for Harmanpreet.

Of course, as Graham Reid found out after Tokyo, there's plenty of potential to fall flat on your face, but if Fulton has his way for the next four years, that first gold medal since Moscow 1980 certainly can't be far away.

Indian Men's Cricket Team

Olympic Athletes to Watch in LA 2028 from India

Cricket is another sport which might bring a medal for the Indian contingent. Six teams will participate in the event to be held in Los Angeles. As hosts, the USA might receive an automatic qualification spot. Further, England will be participating under the Great Britain flag while the Islands which comprise the West Indies will compete as individual countries, which might weaken them.

Indian Men's Cricket Team has been in brilliant form in the white-ball ICC tournaments in the last two years. The team first clinched the T20 World Cup in 2024 and also won the Champions Trophy 2025. Considering the kind of India’s form and the talent pool they have, the Men in Blue are strong medal contenders and that too for a gold.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam

Among the star athletes to expect sometime in LA is Jyothi Surekha Vennam, one of India's most decorated archers. Eight world championship medals, India’s first world title in Compound archery, and 20 World Cup medals, including ten gold medals, are some prestigious accolades proudly owned by her.

Her glorious moment was in Hangzhou, where she created history by winning gold in all three events—individual, women's team, and mixed team compound. In addition to it, she and Ojas Pravin Deotale had won mixed team gold in the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Antalya (April 2023), missing world record status narrowly with a score of 159-154 against Chinese Taipei.

Cricket may be shifted from Los Angeles at the 2028 Olympics, to attract Indian fans

Speculation grows that cricket at the 2028 LA Olympics could move to the East Coast to draw Indian viewers, leveraging better time zones and growing US cricket interest.

Cricket may be shifted from Los Angeles at the 2028 Olympics, to attract Indian fans

There are speculations that cricket competition in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics may get shifted to the East Coast of the United States. The aim is to draw in more traffic, especially from India for the newly added sport.

Not only that, the US seems to have more demand due to the growing popularity of their domestic cricket, according to the host committee chair, Casey Wasserman.

Cricket is not new in the Olympics. However, it has been 128 years since cricket was sidelined. In the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the T20 format of the game will be played. However, the venue is yet to be confirmed.

How will it benefit the Indians?

marine drive-sportzpoint.com

The time difference between Los Angeles and India is almost 12 and a half hours. That means a match starting at around PDT 10 am is available to the Indians at IST 10:30 pm

On the other side, the East Coast is 9 and a half hours behind India. This means that a match that starts around EST (Eastern Daylight Time) at 10 am will be easily broadcast to the Indians at around 10:30 pm.

Earlier, both the men's and the women's tournaments were assigned to the West Coast. But keeping in mind the pros and cons, especially for the Indian Cricket fans, the East Coast may get the hosting responsibilities.

Moreover, New York on the East Coast has some experience in hosting cricket matches. Earlier this year, they arranged several preliminary-round matches of the T20 World Cup, cohosted by West Indies.

Why is India important?

Virat Kohli-sportzpoint.com

India holds the biggest cricket market. Not only that, the International Olympic Committee acknowledged how the popularity of Virat Kohli had made them include cricket in the Olympics.

Niccolo Campriani, the Director of the Olympics, told officially, "Virat Kohli is the main influence for adding cricket to the Olympics."

The Delhi batter has almost 314 million followers across his social media handles, making him the third-most followed athlete in the world. Kohli has more followers on social media than basketball legend LeBron James, rugby stalwart Tom Brady, and golf icon Tiger Woods combined.

According to Sportico, Wasserman had said that they are aiming for "more than USD 150 million in savings and new revenue to help maintain a balanced budget (for the Olympics)."

Grabbing more Indian fans with the added advantage of pre-furnished stadiums will help the committee in achieving so.

The three venues that hosted the T20 World Cup in the US, which India won to break the title drought, were Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and a temporary stadium built on Long Island outside New York City.

New sports added

anahat singh-sportzpoint.com

Apart from cricket, sports like baseball, softball, flag football, squash, and lacrosse, have been added to the LA28 Olympic roster. Olympics have gotten back the previous elegance of the 1990s,

However, shifting matches from the core venue is not unique. During the Paris Olympics, surfing was hosted in Tahiti. Marseille hosted sailing and shooting was held in Chateauroux. Soccer was played throughout the country.

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to include baseball-softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash in the LA Olympics 2028.

As the curtain fell on a memorable Paris Olympics 2024, the focus shifted to the next Games in 2028. LA Olympics 2028 will be the fifth Summer Olympics and ninth Games overall to be hosted by the US. While the next Games are four years away, the excitement is already building. Apart from the glamour of LA, what is also of interest is the disciplines that have been included in the 2028 Olympics programme.

Cricket's popularity will increase further

Cricket will now also be seen on the world's biggest platform like Olympics. Before this, cricket was last played in the Olympics in 1900. Cricket is the most popular sport in the world after football. After joining the Olympics, the popularity of this game will increase further. Also, many other countries of the world will participate in this game.

Last year, cricket was included in the list of disciplines for the 2028 Games. Earlier this year, international cricket formally entered the American market through the T20 World Cup with matches held in Texas, Florida and New York.

Lacrosse return to Olympics after more than a century

Lacrosse return to the Olympics after more than a century, along with baseball/softball. Flag football is non-contact version of the hugely popular American gridiron football and will make its Games debut, while squash has grown in popularity across the world and has been added to the schedule.

Over the past few decades, demand has grown for the sport to be reintroduced. Time constraints had kept the sport away, until the advent of T20 cricket, which allows a game to be completed within three-and-a-half hours and several matches to be held in a single day.

Breaking has been excluded from the LA Olympics 2028

Breaking, or breakdancing as it is more commonly known, made its debut at the Paris Olympics. However, it has not been included in the LA programme and chances are the sport will not be seen on the global stage anytime soon.

Also, it is unclear whether boxing will feature at the LA Olympics. The IOC organised the event in Paris after it stripped the International Boxing Association of its status as the sport's world body over governance and financial management issues. Rival body World Boxing said national boxing federations needed to join its ranks to ensure the sport is included in the LA line up.

Local organising body has the right to review Olympic programme

The Olympic Charter has a provision whereby the local organising body of an Olympic Games has the right to review the Olympic programme for each edition of the Games in order to introduce innovation and sustainability.

Accordingly, the LA Olympics 2028 organising committee proposed the inclusion of the five disciplines. Thereafter, the IOC's Olympic programme commission issued recommendations to the IOC executive board. In October last year, the executive board approved the five sports to be included for the LA Games.

Cricket at Olympics 2028: Everything you MUST know

Cricket is going to return after a long gap of 124 years in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. On 16 October 2023, the inclusion of T20 cricket at Olympics 2028 was announced by the IOC, along with baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash.

History of cricket in Olympics

Cricket was first included in the Olympics in 1900, when Paris held its first Olympics. At that time only one men's match was played, which was between the teams of Great Britain and France. Great Britain won this match by 158 runs. Now cricket will once again be included in the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028 and this time the T20 format has been included.

What is the qualification rules for the cricket at Olympics 2028?

The ECB and Cricket Scotland have offered men's and women's teams to join the Great Britain squad for the 2028 Olympic Games. 6 cricket teams, both men's and women's, can participate in the LA28.

It is not yet clear what the qualification rules will be for the cricket competition, but the ICC T20 ranking can be the basis for it. If England qualifies, then like in other Olympics, they will participate in these games as Great Britain. In such a situation, players from Scotland can also be a part of the England cricket team. Because England competes in the Olympic Games under the name of Great Britain and the Great Britain team includes players from England as well as Scotland and Wales.

What will be the Cricket format?

There would be T20 cricket, the most popular format. Because the T20 format features fast-paced, thrilling matches that spectators are likely to gather to see, this move provides the Olympic program with a modern twist. Given that T20 cricket is a format that features both male and female players, it would be a fantastic chance to expand the game’s fan base.

Venues of cricket at Olympics 2028

The cricket venues of the LA28 have not confirmed yet.

Schedule of cricket at Olympics 2028

The schedule for the T20 cricket will be finalised closer to the Games.

Medal contenders in cricket at LA28

Indian Cricket Team has recently been successful in winning the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, which was organized in West Indies and America. India is participating in four ICC tournaments between Los Angeles Olympics 2028, which include Champions Trophy 2025, World Test Championship Final 2025, T20 World Cup 2026 and ODI World Cup 2027. Better performance is expected from Team India in this.

Apart from India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa will be the biggest contenders in LA28.
