ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023: Trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman clinches bronze in Doha

Trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman on Saturday won a bronze medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 in Doha, Qatar. This was India's first medal in the ongoing ISSF World Cup at the Lusail Shooting Complex in the capital of Qatar.

Prithviraj Tondaiman was on pace to move from the four-man medal match to the two-man gold medal round. But after missing three of his last five shots, he had to settle for a bronze medal with scores of 20/25. Earlier, Prithviraj Tondaiman topped his semi-final with scores of 22/25 to make it to the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 medal match. The Indian shooter shot 122 to finish sixth in the qualifying round.

Meanwhile, Turkey's two-time world champion Oguzhan Tuzun won gold with a score of 33/35. While Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Matthew John of Great Britain took silver with a score of 30/35. Two-time Asian Games champion, Kuwait's Naser Meqlad was the first to be eliminated in the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 medal match. He missed two of his first fifteen attempts.

At the same time, Zoravar Singh Sandhu (119) and Kynan Chenai (118) finished 38th and 49th respectively among 118 competitors. However, in the women's trap shooting, 2018 Commonwealth Games champion Shreyasi Singh shot 118 to qualify for the semi-finals. But she failed to make it to the last four with a score of 21/25.

Kirti Gupta shot 110 to finish 36th among 62 competitors. Rajeshwari Kumari (107) finished 46th while Preeti Rajak shot 105 to finish 50th. On the other hand, Australia's Penny Smith beat Slovakia's Zuzana Stefecekova for the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 gold in the shoot-off. While Alicia Gough of the United States, who scored 20/25 in the medal match, won the bronze.

Last year, Bhowneesh Mendiratta had secured India a quota place for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the ISSF Shotgun World Championships 2022. He shot 120 after five rounds to finish tied-27th. The ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 in Doha will conclude on Sunday.
