Sharath Kamal and Sindhu to represent Indian delegation

The inauguration of the Paris Olympics will take place at 11 pm Indian time. The Indian delegation will be represented by table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal and star badminton player and two-time medalist PV Sindhu. They will be the first athletes from their respective sports to serve as India's flag bearers at the Olympic opening ceremony. Other big names in sport will also be honored during this parade of the 205 countries represented at the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony.

Coco Gauff, the youngest athlete to lead

Basketball stars Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece) and LeBron James (USA) will be among the main flag-bearers. The Los Angeles Lakers player will also be accompanied by tennis player Coco Gauff, who at 20 will become the youngest athlete to lead the way for the Team USA delegation.

IOC allowed two flag bearers since Tokyo Games

The flag bearers carry their country's flag during the opening ceremony of the Games, parading at the head of their national delegations. The same ceremony exists for the Winter Games and the Paralympics.

The tradition of the flag bearer was established in 1912, on the occasion of the Summer Games held in Stockholm. Since the Tokyo Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed countries to designate two flag bearers if they wish, provided that they are a woman and a man.
