The FIA, motorsport’s governing body, has requested Formula One Management (FOM) to limit the use of foul language broadcasted during races. Although explicit words are normally censored, the rising frequency of these outbursts has been a matter of concern. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been the mastermind behind this move, urging for cleaner language on air.
According to Ben Sulayem, the drivers hold the responsibility to control their words even during moments of frustration. He stated that emotions may contradict, but that shouldn't bring professional standards under speculation. The FIA has already instructed FOM to reduce team radio communications with offensive language in broadcasts.
Safeguarding Motorsport's Image
Ben Sulayem has urged us to understand the difference between motorsports and other forms of entertainment like music, where offensive language is a present-day norm. He, however, narrated his own experience as a driver and how it is tough to control emotions in a rush. He. still insisted that racers should remain responsible, especially with live technology capturing every word.
The FIA’s move is also influenced by concerns over the impact of such language on younger viewers. Ben Sulayem brought up the topic of families watching together and how it might affect the environment by using inappropriate language.

Rule Updates Reflect Changing Times
The FIA is known for updating its regulations as to modern challenges. Ben Sulayem, being newly appointed, highlighted certain changes to the International Sporting Code (ISC). This includes the definition of 'misconduct,’ which is now associated with using foul and offensive language used by the drivers and their team in order to reduce abuses, including online abuse.
Further updates were made in 2022 restricting political, religious, or personal statements that violate the FIA's principle of neutrality. These measures aim to uphold fairness and ethics in motorsport. Ben Sulayem reiterated that regulations evolve over time to protect the spirit of the sport, ensuring a balanced and clear representation of Formula 1.
FIA Sanctions Max Verstappen for Inappropriate Language in Press Conference
Earlier, in September 2024, Max Verstappen was penalized by F1's governing body, the FIA, for using inappropriate language during a pre-race press conference in Singapore.
Verstappen had described his car in coarse terms, referencing the Azerbaijan event, prompting an investigation by the stewards. After reviewing the audio and transcript, the FIA gave a statement that his language breached their standards for public forums, especially when F1 drivers are viewed as role models.
