BCCI is all set to announce the 15-member Indian team squad right after the decisive T20I against South Africa in Ahmedabad. According to reports, the BCCI selection committee is expected to announce the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, as well as the five-match T20I series against New Zealand squad on Saturday, December 20, 2025.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar will announce the squad at a press conference at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. The selection meeting will be followed by a press conference. Although the official ICC deadline is January 8, 2026, the board wants to give the players enough time to prepare mentally, hence the decision is being taken early.
India to start campaign with new captain
After winning the title in 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India will be playing in a major tournament for the first time under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The composition of the team has changed a lot after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retired from the T20I cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav will be the captain of this new team and Shubman Gill can be given the responsibility of vice-captain, even though he is currently injured but his place for the World Cup is considered certain.
Selectors' concerns and hosting challenges
Before announcing the team, the selectors have some major concerns, the biggest of which is the form of captain Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. Gill has only passed 30 runs three times since the 2025 Asia Cup, which is a cause for concern for the team. Furthermore, the competition between Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma in the middle order has also added to the selectors' difficulties.
The T20 World Cup 2026 will begin on February 7, 2026, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Being on home soil, India will be under extra pressure to defend the title and after South Africa, the New Zealand series will prove to be the last leg of their preparations.
