The tournament has 56 players, including 16 seeds, with the top eight receiving a bye into the second round. The most notable withdrawals are world number two Daniil Medvedev and 11-time Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal, while world number six Matteo Berrettini withdrew as he continues his recovery from hand surgery. Dominic Thiem, the former world number three, is also out after not fully recuperating from Covid.

The presence of world number one Novak Djokovic in what will be the Serb's only event in 2022 is remarkable, however. The two-time winner will be the top seed and arguably the favourite to win the tournament, despite his absence from play. Carlos Alcaraz, the newly minted Miami Open winner, makes his Monte Carlo debut. Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas also returns.
