ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic remains on top, ends the year with number-one ranking for record 8th time

Novak Djokovic improved his record to end the year as the number one player in the new ATP rankings for the eighth time on Monday.

Djokovic won three of the four Grand Slam titles of the year, the Australian Open in January, the French Open in June and the US Open in September. He has won a record 24 Grand Slams in men's singles. Djokovic was also the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2023.

Djokovic registered 56 wins in 2023 while he faced defeat seven times. He won seven titles during this period, which also includes the ATP Finals title last month. 36-year-old of Serbian achieved the top ranking by defeating Carlos Alcaraz. It was Alcaraz who defeated Djokovic in five sets in the Wimbledon final in July.

Djokovic eclipsed his own mark for the oldest player to top the ATP at the end of a season; he was 34 in 2021. His eight year-end No. 1s put him two ahead of previous record-holder Pete Sampras, who did it six times. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal each finished at No. 1 five times, as did Jimmy Connors.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz finished 2023 as the second-ranked player in the latest ATP Rankings. While Daniil Medvedev closed 2023 at No. 3, followed by Jannik Sinner at a career-best No. 4, Andrey Rublev at No. 5, Stefanos Tsitsipas at No. 6, Alexander Zverev at No. 7, Holger Rune at No. 8, Hubert Hurkacz at No. 9, and Taylor Fritz at No. 10.

On the other hand, Iga Swiatek, who won the WTA Finals title last month, remained the number one female player in the WTA rankings. While Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula come after them.
