Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden entered the men's doubles quarter-finals of the Miami Open tennis tournament by defeating Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski in a hard-fought match here.
The Indo-Australian pair of Bopanna and Ebden defeated Nys and Zielinski 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the second round of the Miami Open, ATP Masters 1000 tournament played on Monday night. This match lasted for one hour and 39 minutes. The top-seeded doubles player will next face John Patrick Smith of Australia and Sem Verbeek of the Netherlands.
The Australian Open champions hit four aces and won 84 per cent (37/44) of the points on their first serves. There was tough competition between the two pairs in the match from beginning to end. Bopanna and Ebden took a breakpoint in the 11th game of the first set to lead 6-5. In the next game, they won the first set by saving two break points.
In the second set, both the pairs saved their serve and took it to the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Nys and Zielinski committed double faults, taking advantage of which Bopanna and Ebden won the set and the match.
Earlier, the top seeds edged past Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-4 in the Miami Open opening round.
Carlos Alcaraz enters fourth round
On the other hand, top seed Carlos Alcaraz also powered into the fourth round of the Miami Open with a 6-2, 6-4 win over French veteran Gael Monfils. Alcaraz, who won the tournament title in 2022, is poised to face Italy's Lorenzo Musetti in the upcoming round after Musetti defeated American Ben Shelton with a score of 6-4, 7-6(5).
Iga Swiatek suffers defeat
Iga Swiatek's aspirations for another 'Sunshine Double' were dashed in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round of the Miami Open. The world number one's loss echoed third seed Coco Gauff's early departure from the tournament.
