A distinguished wardrobe has always had its place on the tennis court. Long considered a pastime of the elite, the refined sport has been encouraging smart dress since the turn of the 20th century.

But while tradition mandates all-white ensembles, the game’s gutsiest players have since experimented with a rainbow of uniforms, accessories, and even hairstyles.

From the sport’s earliest days to its top moments of controversy, tennis has long been influenced by fashion and has influenced it in turn.

As the sport evolved, a more uniform but still formal style of dress started to form for women. 

The tennis look drew from lawn dresses, which were often worn to garden parties, racecourses and other outdoor leisure events. These all-white, cotton and linen garments featured lace inserts and elaborate embroidery patterns. 

They eventually transitioned from being worn by spectators to being worn by players on the court. The prominence of these dresses shows that the focus of tennis attire was still on fashion, not performance.

One of the earliest moments that this form-over-function mindset was challenged was at the 1887 Wimbledon Championship. 

Tennis star Charlotte Dod, known as Lottie, was only 15 the first time she won a Wimbledon title; because of her youth, she was able to wear clothing that was not as restricting.

Ditching the tight corset, full-length dress and multi-layered gown, she wore calf-length garb more similar to a school uniform than a tennis uniform at the time.

Many older opponents argued that her attire gave her an unfair advantage by allowing her to move in ways and at speeds that the traditional tennis gear could not, bringing to the sport, for one of the first times, the question of designing garments for mobility and agility.

This concept was furthered by the iconoclastic Suzanne Lenglen, who was the center of another Wimbledon fashion scandal in 1919 when she wore a calf-length skirt, short sleeves and a floppy hat. 

Despite the backlash from the press, which called her indecent, Lenglen went on to win the tournament. 

She often wore a tulle wrap around her head while playing, called the “Lenglen bandeau,” which caught on to become a defining look of the Roaring Twenties.

Naomi Osaka made a grand return to the US Open 2024 after a two-year break, leaving the internet obsessed with her.

Osaka entered the court to play her match against Jelena Ostapenko in a neon green ruffled dress.

The dress was styled with a detachable matching tulle-adorned mini skirt, a white cropped jacket adorned with a large green bow, and bow-decked accessories - including sneakers and headphones.

Tennis star Serena Williams, who took retirement from the sport in 2022, made a remarkable appearance for her match with Danka Kovinic in the first round of the women's singles event at the US Open 2022. 

The star not only won the game but also left her fans impressed with her sartorial choice of attire.

Known to make heads turn with her on-court outfit choices, Serena once again proved her fashion prowess.

Serena turned up wearing a pair of diamond-encrusted Nike shoes, featuring solid gold lace deubre that read mama and queen with a black ensemble.

The black outfit that she wore featured an embellished bodice and sheer sleeves, and flowed into a voluminous skirt.

3. Emma Raducanu’s Tiffany & Co. Jewellery (Wimbledon 2022)

British tennis star Emma Raducanu made her Wimbledon debut in 2022 wearing approximately $37,000 worth of diamond and pearl jewelry. 

The diamond teardrop earrings from the Tiffany Victoria collection, which are priced at $9,300, feature a 11-12 mm pearl suspended from a diamond flower.

The matching diamond and pearl pendant from the same collection is worth $4,800.

Raducanu paired the two pieces with an 18k gold bangle, half set with round diamonds and hinged with a "T" motif at the center. 

The gold bracelet worn by Raducanu is priced at $23,000, however Tiffany & Co offers both a rose gold and silver bracelet with a slimmer band for $11,500.

4. Serena Williams’ Wakanda-inspired catsuit (French Open 2018)

Serena Williams stunned fans at the 2018 French Open when she stepped onto the court in a black Nike catsuit, a nod, at least in part, to Black Panther.

Black with a red waistband, the full-length bodysuit looked striking on Williams, a new mom; she was likened to a superhero in the ensemble.

But the catsuit won’t be welcome at Roland Garros. 

While fans and the media praised the look, French Tennis Federation banned catsuits and changed the tournament’s dress code in direct response to the look.

5. Anne White’s spandex catsuit (Wimbledon 1985)

The former American tennis star Anne White caused uproar at Wimbledon in 1985 with her choice of clothing, leaving her opponent and officials furious.

Anne was warming up in a tracksuit for her match against fifth seed Pam Shriver in the first round when she removed her suit and revealed an all-white lycra unitard. 

Being 1985, it created quite a stir among the crowd and photographers. Play was stopped for the day due to bad lighting with the match tied at one set all. 

The umpire Alan Mills instructed Anne to wear a more appropriate outfit the next day; she did, and lost the third set.

She was the first tennis star to be criticised for wearing a catsuit on-court.

6. Venus Williams’ Moulin Rouge-inspired look (French Open 2010)

Every time Venus Williams steps onto a court, spectators are eager to see what outfit she's wearing. 

At Roland Garros 2010, Venus once again surprised the crowd when she unzipped her jacket to reveal an anything but ordinary on-court get up.

When the jacket came off, Venus wasn’t just a tennis player, she had the look of a 19th-century can-can dancer. 

As she slid into forehands and loaded her legs, flying up to smash serves, Venus also had the movement of an iconic Parisian dancer.

The black and red outfit mostly consisted of lace, with the upper half a tight corset and the bottom flaring out into a flowy tutu.

7. Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ Lady Gaga look (Wimbledon 2011)

Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who is famous for her unusual fashion taste, decked out in a Lady Gaga-inspired jacket festooned with real tennis balls before her first round defeat in the Wimbledon 2011.

Although the All England Club usually demands a conservative, predominantly white outfit, Mattek-Sands lived up to her flamboyant reputation. 

She wore a white jacket covered in tassel and cut-in-half tennis balls, knee-high socks and a top which had one sleeve missing to show off her tattoos.

For her third round of women's singles at US Open 2004, Serena Williams opted for an all-black ensemble (also by Nike), wearing a dress featuring silver studs all around the neck, down the midline and at the hips.

2. 2017 US Open Champion | Sloane Stephens

At the 2017 US Open, unseeded Sloan Stephens prevailed over Madison Keys in the first all-American women's singles championship since the Williams sisters went head-to-head in 2002.

During just one hour of play, Stephens defeated Keys 6-3, 6-0. It was her first major title. Stephens also became the second unseeded woman in the Open Era to win the title after Kim Clijsters in 2009.

3. 2018 US Open Champion | Naomi Osaka

In a breakout performance at the 2018 US Open, Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 to become Japan's first-ever tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title. She lost only one set during the tournament, to Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round.

4. 2019 US Open Champion | Bianca Andreescu

Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu won her first Grand Slam trophy at the 2019 US Open. She defeated 23-time winner Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5. Andreescu became the first Canadian, as well as the first player born in the 2000s, to win a major singles title. 

In addition, Bianca was the youngest person since Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2004 to win a major singles title, and the first woman to win the US Open on her main draw debut.

Bianca also became the first Canadian to reach the semifinals in the tournament since Carling Bassett-Seguso in 1984 and she was also the first Canadian woman to reach the final in any major since Eugenie Bouchard in the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.

5. 2020 US Open Champion | Naomi Osaka

Japan's Naomi Osaka won her second US Open singles title in just three years at the 2020 US Open, defeating Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Osaka also became the first woman since Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario in 1994 to win the US Open after dropping the first set. It was also her third major title overall.

Osaka became the first player from an Asian country (excluding Russia) to win three major singles titles, the first player since Jennifer Capriati to win three such titles in three attempts.

6. 2021 US Open Champion | Emma Raducanu

It was a battle between teenage upstarts Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez at the 2021 US Open. 7. 2022 US Open Champion | Iga Świątek 

In the 2022 US Open women's final, Iga Świątek battled past Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) for her second Grand Slam win of the season. With this win, Swiatek became the first woman to win seven titles in one year since Serena Williams in 2014. The world No1 also matched a Serena Williams record by claiming her tenth straight finals victory.

8. 2023 US Open Champion | Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff stopped Aryna Sabalenka's juggernaut in the US Open 2023 final to earn her maiden Grand Slam title. With this triumph, she emerged as the first American player to secure a US Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. Gauff also became the youngest American to win the US Open women's singles title since 17-year-old Serena Williams did it in 1999.

9. 2024 US Open Champion | Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus won the US Open 2024 women's singles title. Sabalenka defeated America's Jessica Pegula in consecutive sets 7-5, 7-5 in the final. This is her first US Open title and third Grand Slam title. Earlier, she had won the Australian Open title in 2023 and 2024. Aryna Sabalenka became the first woman to defend the US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014. Sabalenka notched her 100th career Grand Slam main-draw match victory with her win over Amanda Anisimova by 6-3, 7-6(3).

This is where the rankings diverge from methodology, as Novak Djokovic is ranked below three much-younger players but still, in my view, has a better chance in five-set matches. Djokovic got annihilated by Sinner in the Wimbledon Semifinal, and it looks more and more like the GOAT doesn’t have a prayer against men’s tennis’ new royalty. 

But I’d still probably pick him against any of the other 62 players in the tournament, a testament to how much his game has endured his older age.

Daniil Medvedev

However, regardless of what happened, Hingis refused to give up and snatched the top spot from Davenport in 1999. As a result, she spent a total of 209 weeks as the number one player, but as fate would have it, Jennifer Capriati ascended the ladder to dethrone her.

Probably, She could have been the greatest female tennis player the world had ever seen, but she became enamoured with modelling and was never able to regain her form or ranking. "Fate is a cruel mistress, isn't it? " We ponder at times.

#9. Chris Evert- 260 Weeks

Whilst talking about her achievements, our words would fall inadequate. After all, This American legend holds the honour of being the first woman to officially be recognised as world number one. What an accomplishment! Over nine spells at the top of the women's tennis pile, Evert accumulated 260 weeks in the number one position.

From 1976 until 1985, Evert was in a constant battle for the top spot with Martina Navratilova. However, after years of jaw-dropping collisions, the 'Ice Maiden's ' reign came to an end with Martina fetching the spot. Moreover, Chris Evert's Wonderful journey also earned her a place in our list of ATP & WTA Rankings.

#8. Jimmy Conors- 268 Weeks

If you're a tennis enthusiast, you've probably heard this name before. Jimmy Connors has a reputation as a great coach in addition to being a successful player. He also dominated the ATP Rankings for 268 weeks.

The American became the first man in history to cross the 200-week mark. He is also the first person on this list of ATP & WTA Rankings to have won over 100 awards. In addition, Connor has won eight Grand Slams. However, he never managed to win Roland Garros in his life, only reaching the semi-finals four times on the clay court.

Connors retired at the age of 43 after a long career in the sport. His playing technique, particularly his backhands, has inspired the modern era indeed. Also, he coached Maria Sharapova, who rose to World No. 1 in the women's category under his tutelage.

#7. Ivan Lendl- 270 Weeks

Ivan Lendl is a Czech icon who is the only player from his country to ever reach the top of the world rankings. For 270 weeks, he was the top player in the ATP Rankings. He is one of only two players to achieve Rank 1 before winning a Grand Slam.

After ascending to the throne in February 1983, the Czech ruled for a total of 29 weeks before embarking on his three-year reign. He won five of his eight Slam victories over this period of almost 150 weeks, as well as reaching the Wimbledon final twice, in 1986 and 1987, the only times he did so.

Lendl became known as the "Man Who Revolutionized Tennis" after winning eight major titles and 94 titles. He pioneered aggressive baseline power tennis (which can now be observed in Rafael Nadal's game), as well as a combination of forehand and topspin.

Aside from his playing accomplishments, he went on to become a successful coach for Scottish tennis star Andy Murray, guiding him to the number one ranking.

#5. Roger Federer- 310 Weeks

Roger Federer has won everyone's hearts with his tremendous tennis skills. Fans even gave him the nickname 'The swiss maestro', impressed by the proficiency of his craft. Is there anything that this man hasn't gained? A simple answer would be hatred.

The Swiss maestro is adored by everyone on the planet. With his balletic movements in the court, his poised serves, and his Always-smiling face, he holds a special position in every ardent tennis fan's heart.

King Federer wore the crown of ATP Rank 1 for 310 weeks, the first male player in the history of tennis to cross 300 weeks. He also has a record of 237 straight weeks as Number One.

Accompanied by his utter dominance on grass, Federer earned the title 'King of grass'. To date, he and Martina Navratilova remain the ultimate king and queen in Wimbledon. Moreover, He is regarded as the G.O.A.T. in men's tennis due to his incredible abilities on the court.

#4. Serena Williams- 319 Weeks

Can you believe the 23-time Slam champion first topped the women's rankings on July 8, 2002, when she was only 20 years old? Well, neither can we. After achieving such a record, the young American remained in first place for nearly a year, 57 weeks to be exact, while she won Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open consecutively before adding a second Wimbledon to bring her total Slam tally to five.

From August 2003 to September 2008, Williams was not ranked number one at all. Meanwhile, the top spot changed hands 19 times between seven different women. However, her poised serve, and outstanding netplay propelled her back to the top rank for a month.

In addition, the amazing lady owns the record for the longest streak, which is 186 weeks. As a result of this, she linked hands with Steffi Graf.

Her list of accomplishments is certainly impressive, but there is one more feather that she may be able to introduce to her cap. That is winning 2 more grand slams and in the process, passing Margaret Court as the highest grand slam winner in tennis history (Both men's and women's). However, only time will tell if the 'Momma Smash' is capable of accomplishing such a feat.

#3. Martina Navratilova- 332 Weeks

The situation was not easy for 'The Wimbledon queen,' as her long-time adversary Chris Evert was not willing to give her a field in the WTA rankings. However, after much hard work, Navratilova was able to achieve the top ranking in July 1978. She dethroned Evert from the top, ending her 113-week reign.

In 1978, the 18-time Grand Slam champion won her first Grand Slam and first Wimbledon victory, which propelled her to the top of the rankings.

Well, after all of her hard work, it was finally time for her to bask in the glory of her accomplishments. Therefore, she went on to enjoy nine overall spells at world number one. She was last ranked in that position in August 1987, when she had 16 Slam singles wins under her belt. Her wonderful records placed her in the 3rd position in our list of ATP & WTA Rankings.

#2. Stefi Graff- 377 Weeks

Now, this brings us to the number 1 spot holder on our list of ATP & WTA Rankings. Honestly, our list can't be completed without her. Steffi Graf is a name to reckon with in the world of tennis. Often regarded as the greatest of all time, there might not be a lot of records in the book that the champion player hasn't broken.

Winner of as many as 22 Grand Slam titles, Steffi's presence was enough to send shivers down the spine of her opponents. Steffi's versatility and dominance across different surfaces made her the fan favourite. The extent of the German tennis star's dominance can be gauged by the fact that she held the world's No. 1 ranking for 377 weeks.

Graf first rose to the top of the rankings in August 1987. After breaking the reigning of Evert and Navratilova, Graf enjoyed 186 weeks in the top position on her first spell. Also, the 'Fraulein forehand' didn't just stop there. She went on to create history by completing the Calendar Golden Slam of winning all four Majors and the Olympic gold medal in 1988.

Graf achieved such a performance that the phrase "Golden Slam" was coined. Furthermore, with these accomplishments on her side, she went on to spend 377 weeks as the World's No. 1 tennis player, an astonishing record that remains untouched to date.

#1. Novak Djokovic- 428 Weeks

The 1 member of the 'Big Three' already appeared on this list and thus it leaves the second member of the trio to feature here. Novak Djokovic has been the World Number One for a record 428 weeks while he has won 100 tour-level titles and overtook Stefi Graff's record. Djokovic climbed to No. 1 for the first time in 4 July 2011.

Aside from his rivals Nadal and Federer, Djokovic is one of the most successful players. He deserved to be at the top since he has dominated the court for the past decade. He is also considered to be the 'King of the Australian Open' due to winning the trophy 10 times. Astonishing, isn't it? The Serbian tennis player became the No.1 tennis player for the 11th time on January 11, 2023, as a result of his 4th US Open title.
