Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham has been a lucky hunting ground for the England cricket team against the Men in Blue since 1967. With the second test of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy around the corner at this great venue, we present you all the results of the England vs India test matches at Edgbaston Stadium.

ENG vs IND Test at Edgbaston: Every result

13-17 July 1967: England won by 132 runs

India first played a test match at Edgbaston in 1967 when Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's team were hosted by Brian Close's English side. 

England won the toss and decided to bat first. Although India bowled well and the spin attack of Bishan Bedi, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, and Erapalli Prasanna helped England get bowled out for 298 in the first innings, Indian batters failed them.

India were bundled out for only 92 in the first inning and could not manage to come back from then on.

England scored 203 in the second inning as Prasanna took another 4 wickets in the inning, going with his 3 in the first inning.  

Despite a fighting 70 off 214 balls from Ajit Wadekar and 47 off 145 from captain Pataudi, India fell short by 132 runs. India lost the series 0-3.

4-8 July 1974 | England won by an inning and 78 runs

In their second test match at the Edgbaston Stadium, Ajit Wadekar's India faced a huge defeat. 

They were again playing the third and final test of the series, after losing the first two.

India batted first but could only manage 165 in the first inning. Star opener Sunil Gavaskar was out for a golden duck in the first inning. Farokh Engineer was the star for India with an unbeaten 64.  

David Lloyd scored a mammoth unbeaten 214 while captain Mike Denness scored 100 from 189 balls to take England to 459/2, after which they declared. 

In the second inning, India were bowled out for 216 and lost the match by an inning and 78 runs. Sudhir Naik scored a valiant 77 for India. 

12-16 July 1979 | England won by an inning and 83 runs

India would have managed a historic unbeaten series if they had started the 1979 tour well at Edgbaston. 

During that tour, India only lost one match, and that was in Birmingham. 

England won the toss and batted first. Geoff Boycott (155) and David Gower (200*) helped England score 633/5 before declaring. Kapil Dev bowled his heart out before finishing with 146/5.

India started their fight with Sunil Gavaskar (61) and Gundappa Viswanath (78) scoring some runs in the first inning. But India could only manage 297 and were asked to follow on. 

In the second inning, Gavaskar scored 68 while Chetan Chauhan and Gundappa Viswanath scored fifties. But, India were bundled out for 253 only. 

Ian Botham took a five-wicket haul for England in the second innings. Sunil Gavaskar finished the series with 542 runs.

3-7 July 1986 | Draw

The first and only time till now when India did not lose a test match at Edgbaston was in the 1986 tour. 

Kapil Dev was the captain of the Indian team, and the fighting performance from everyone made sure India created history on that tour. 

England captain Mike Gatting scored an unbeaten 183 in the first inning, and England scored 390. Chetan Sharma picked up four wickets for India. 

Fifties from Mohinder Amarnath and young Mohammad Azharuddin helped India match England's first innings total. 

In the second inning, England only managed 235 as Chetan Sharma picked up a six-wicket haul to finish with a 10-wicket haul in the match. 

Gavaskar scored 54 while Mohammad Azharuddin remained unbeaten on 29 from 106 balls to help India draw the match.

India won the series 2-0, for the first time on English soil. 

6-10 June 1996 | England won by 8 wickets

10 years later, India could not keep the momentum as they faced England again in Birmingham. 

Last time's hero, Azharuddin, was the captain of the Indian team while Mike Atherton was leading the home side. 

India won the toss and batted first. Javagal Srinath's 52 from 65 balls at number 9 helped India reach 214 in the first inning. But England replied with a solid ton from Nasser Hussain (128). 

Despite the ton, England could reach only 313 as Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad picked up four wickets each for India. 

Sachin Tendulkar (122) scored a brilliant ton in the second inning, but other batters failed as India managed only 219 runs.

Mike Atherton remained unbeaten on 53 to see his team home with an easy win. That was England's only win of the series as the other two matches were drawn.

10-14 August 2011 | England won by an innings and 242 runs 

India faced their biggest defeat at the Edgbaston Stadium when they returned to the ground after 16 years. 

MS Dhoni's men, who were then the World's No.1 test team, just could not handle England's batting powerhouse and surrendered against the home side. 

Indian batters, except for MS Dhoni (77), failed in the first inning as India only managed 224 in the first inning. In reply, Alastair Cook scored his career best 294 from 545 balls to help England score 710/7 before they declared. 

Eoin Morgan also scored a ton for England in that inning. 

In the second inning, MS Dhoni again shone with the bat with an unbeaten 74 from 79 balls, but it was not enough for India to avoid a humiliating defeat. 

India were whitewashed by 0-4 in the series.

1-5 August 2018 | England won by 31 runs

This was the closest India came to winning a test match at Edgbaston Stadium. 

After that humiliating defeat 7 years ago, Virat Kohli's men were desperate to turn things around for India. With two young captains (Joe Root and Virat Kohli) at their helm, world cricket saw one of the most contested test matches in Birmingham. 

Root scored 80 while Jonny Bairstow scored 70 for England as they scored 287 in the first inning. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 4 while Mohammed Shami picked up 3 wickets for India. 

In reply, Kohli scored a staggering 149, but other batters failed to contribute much as the men in blue were bundled out for 274. Sam Curran picked up 4 wickets for the home side.

Indian bowlers replied with aggression as they were able to bowl England out for 180 in the second inning. But if it was not for Sam Curran's 63 from 65 balls, they could have been all out below 100. 

Ishant Sharma picked up 51/5. 

But, after Kohli's dismissal on 51 from 93 balls, the Indian batting order could not handle the pressure and eventually lost the match by 31 runs. 

England won the series 4-1.

1-5 July 2022 | England won by 7 wickets

England's domination in Birmingham continued as they remained unbeaten in all 8 test matches against India there. 

India were missing Rohit Sharma, who had tested positive for Covid-19, as Jasprit Bumrah created history as the first pacer to captain India in Tests since the legendary Kapil Dev in 1987.

India scored 416 in the first inning after Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) scored tons for them. 

But Jonny Bairstow's 106 kept England in the game, despite getting them bowled out for 284. Mohammed Siraj took 66/4 for India. 

Cheteshwar Pujara, who opened in the match, scored 66 while Pant scored 57 to take India to 245 in the second inning. 

But, England managed to chase 378, their highest successful chase in Test cricket, as Joe Root (142*) and Bairstow (114*) played an incredible innings for the hosts. 

However, despite the defeat, India managed to draw the series 2-2. 

The controversy over the key members of the Indian Test team not being selected for major domestic cricket tournaments continues to grow. Now The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed strong displeasure over the exclusion of top international players like KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj from the South Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

After this, the Board has officially written a letter to all the state associations asking them to give priority to the selection of centrally contracted players for this opening tournament of the domestic season.

Many big names were not included

South Zone announced its team on July 27. Many big names like KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Sai Sudharsan were not included in it.

The Duleep Trophy, which begins in Bengaluru on August 28, is considered an important platform for domestic and national level talents. The board did not like the decision of the South Zone to not include these players in the team despite their availability during the off-season.

Abey Kuruvilla wrote the email

BCCI General Manager of Cricket Operations Abey Kuruvilla addressed the issue in an email sent to zonal coordinators and state units last week. According to the reports, Kuruvilla stressed the importance of ensuring the participation of all available Indian players to maintain the prestige and competitive level of the Duleep Trophy. 

Kuruvilla wrote in the email, “To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it’s imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked.”

“All players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI,” 

“In case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of the selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason.” the email said.

Instructions to give priority to domestic cricket

This directive is in line with the BCCI's policy of making participation of international players mandatory in domestic competitions. The board had previously warned players against giving priority to the IPL over first-class cricket and earlier this year reminded all contracted players to remain committed to the domestic calendar.

However, this instruction from BCCI has come after South Zone announced its team. It is still not clear whether the selectors will make any changes in their list or not. Tilak Verma was made the captain of the team.

Questions were raised on international players

Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Shreyas Iyer among many other players are expected to participate in the tournament representing their respective regions.

The state associations have previously expressed concern that the automatic inclusion of Indian stars in the regional teams overlooks Ranji players who have performed consistently throughout the season.

Many have argued that matches such as India A tours and Board President's XI would be a more suitable platform for international players, leaving regional tournaments as a rewarding avenue for domestic players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the contract of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. According to the report, he will remain in this position till June 2026. The decision came just two days after India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement. Former fast bowler Agarkar was made the chairman of Team India's selection committee in July 2023.

The contract was renewed before IPL 2025

According to the report, Agarkar's contract was renewed ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. During his tenure, the Indian team won titles and also saw changes (in Tests and T20s). The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months ago.

“Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official said.

Indian cricket team under Agarkar's tenure

During Ajit Agarkar's tenure, Team India won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Apart from this, Team India also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Where it lost to Australia.

Agarkar has also overseen leadership changes. Shubman Gill became Test captain. Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the T20I side. Meanwhile, senior stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma now play only ODIs. Ravichandran Ashwin has retired completely.

S Sharath could lose his place

Agarkar currently works with SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath. But changes are expected at the BCCI annual meeting in September.

Reports say S Sharath could lose his place. He has served close to four years as selector, the maximum allowed by BCCI rules. Sharath earlier headed the junior selection panel before joining the senior one in 2023. BCCI will soon invite applications to fill the vacancy. Officials are largely happy with the rest of the panel. Only Sharath’s role looks under review for now.

Changes will also be made for women’s and junior panels

The shake-up will not stop with the men’s committee. The BCCI will also invite applications for the women’s and junior selectors. Neetu David, head of the women’s panel, and members Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee, complete their terms this season. The junior men’s panel, led by Thilak Naidu and others, may also see changes.

Agarkar's international career

Ajit Agarkar has taken 349 international wickets in his career. He has taken 58 wickets in Tests, 288 in ODIs and 3 wickets in T20 Internationals.

Agarkar was also a part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007. He scored 15 runs and took one wicket in 2 matches of the tournament. India won the title by defeating Pakistan in the final of the tournament held in South Africa.

Agarkar is the fastest Indian batsman to score a half century in ODIs. He scored a half century in 21 balls against Zimbabwe in the year 2000. He has also completed the fastest 50 wickets in ODIs for India. He achieved this feat in 23 matches.

The Buchi Babu 2025 tournament has started by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association from 18 August to 9 September. In Round 1, TNCA XI and Mumbai are facing off at Gojan College B Ground. On the very first day of this match, India's Out-of-favour middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan has attracted everyone's attention by scoring a brilliant century.

Sarfaraz hit 92-ball century

Sarfaraz Khan scored this century while batting at number 5. When he came to bat, Mumbai had lost three wickets for 98 runs. After this, Sarfaraz Khan handled the team's innings and scored a stormy century. Sarfaraz reached the 100-run mark in just 92 balls. During this, he also hit 9 fours and 3 sixes. 

Not selected for England tour

This innings is special for Sarfaraz Khan in many ways, because recently he was not selected in the Indian Test team for the England tour. Sarfaraz has been in the news for his fitness for some time now. After not being selected in Team India, he worked a lot on his fitness. Sarfaraz Khan surprised everyone by losing about 17 kg in just one and a half months.

This is his first match after losing weight and he has been successful in leaving his mark in this match. Sarfaraz Khan is now eyeing to make his place in the home Test series to be played against West Indies.

Sarfaraz's Test performance for India so far

The last of Sarfaraz’s six Tests came during New Zealand’s tour of India last year. After scoring a brilliant 150 in the first Test against the Kiwis in Bengaluru, Sarfaraz just managed 21 runs in the subsequent four innings as India was blanked 0-3 at home. In 11 Test innings so far, Sarfaraz has scored 371 runs at a middling average of 37.10.

Though Sarfaraz was picked in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, he didn’t play a single game in the five-match affair.

However, with Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan failing to make a statement with the willow during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, Sarfaraz has a golden opportunity to be in the scheme of things again ahead of a packed home season.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has returned to the nets for the first time since undergoing surgery on his lower right abdomen. Asia Cup 2025 is going to start from 9th September. All the teams have started their preparations. This time the tournament will be played in T20 format. In such a situation, it is very important for Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav to be fit. Records Suryakumar Yadav can break in Asia Cup 2025

3,000 T20I Runs with 160+ Strike Rate

The 34-year-old is on the verge of becoming the first player in T20I history to score 3,000 runs while maintaining a strike rate above 160. He is currently 402 runs short of the milestone. No batter in history has got to 3,000 T20I runs with a strike rate above 150.

Most Centuries in T20Is

Surya also needs one more century to equal the joint record of five T20I hundreds held by Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell. Batting in the top order will give him a golden opportunity to at least equal, if not surpass, their record. Given his IPL 2025 form, breaking it outright isn’t out of the question.

Players with 150 T20I Sixes

Sky just needs four more sixes to join the elite club of players with 150 T20I sixes, with 146 sixes to his name. Only Rohit (205), Martin Guptill (173), Muhammad Waseem (168), and Jos Buttler (160) have cleared the rope more often. This one could be ticked off within a match or two.

Surya is focused on recovery and fitness

To speed up his recovery, Suryakumar withdrew from the Duleep Trophy 2025 and has been concentrating on strength-building, mobility work, and match fitness at the NCA. His training is aimed at ensuring he can handle the demands of back-to-back matches in the Asia Cup.

Surya's performance in IPL 2025

Surya was last seen playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. He batted brilliantly this season and won the Most Valuable Player award by scoring 717 runs for Mumbai Indians.

Rohit Sharma retired from the T20 format after the T20 World Cup 2024. After this, Surya is captaining the Indian T20I team. Surya has shown excellent captaincy. He has won 17 matches for India in 22 matches. 

The Indian team will start its campaign in Asia Cup 2025 from September 10, where it will face UAE. Apart from this, the big match between India and Pakistan will be played on September 14.

Shreyas Iyer is on the verge of a comeback to India’s Test and T20I squads after dominating in ODIs and IPL 2025. Selectors now see Iyer as an all-format solution for India’s middle order, especially ahead of the Asia Cup and West Indies Test series. His comeback is expected to bring stability and experience, especially on spin-friendly tracks where India has struggled lately. 

Iyer has been out of favour in Tests since a back issue and poor form saw him lose his berth during the home series against England last year. The decision-makers, however, feel Iyer has done all the right things since losing his contract after expressing a reluctance to play domestic cricket.

105 vs New Zealand (2021)

It was one of Shreyas Iyer's best knocks in Tests against New Zealand in the first test match in Kanpur. Iyer played a phenomenal knock of 105 runs off 171 balls, including 13 fours and two sixes. This knock was memorable for Iyer as it was his debut hundred in the test match against New Zealand.

92 vs Sri Lanka (2022)

Iyer played a gem of a knock in the pink-ball Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium against Sri Lanka in 2022. India were 86/4 after electing to bat. Iyer shone with a blistering 92 off 98 deliveries, whipping 10 fours and four maximums.

He played with the tail-enders and was the last man to be dismissed (252/10). India eventually won by 238 runs.

87 vs Bangladesh (2022)

Bowling first, India folded Bangladesh on 227. India, however, had a shaky start and were down to 94/4. Iyer then joined hands with a ferocious-looking Rishabh Pant and the duo plundered 159 runs for the fifth wicket. The pair played a part as India snatched an 87-run lead (314/10).

Iyer smacked 87 off 105 deliveries (4s: 10, 6s: 2), lifting India from the trenches.

86 vs Bangladesh (2022)

India stumbled in the first Test too (112/4 in 31.4 overs). They needed to keep the Tigers at bay. Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara delivered the needful, stitching a 149-run partnership before the latter departed (261/5).

Iyer got out the next day after a well-struck 86 off 192 deliveries. India ended up scoring 404 in the first innings and eventually won by 188 runs.

67 vs Sri Lanka (2022)

Rishabh Pant put the Sri Lankan attack to the sword with a record-breaking half-century while Shreyas Iyer yet again conjured up a measured fifty to let India grab complete control of the second Test over Sri Lanka.

Pant’s 31-ball 50 and Iyer’s 67 after useful contributions from top-order batters meant that India set Sri Lanka a mammoth 447-run target after declaring their second innings at 303 for nine.

65 vs New Zealand (2021)

It was another mature knock from Iyer while playing only his second innings in the purest format. India (41/3) were in a spot of bother when the debutant arrived. Despite running out of partners, Iyer managed to carve a 125-ball 65. He ended up top-scoring for the hosts.

He was noted for fetching pivotal stands with Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha, helping India reach 167/7.
