Team News

Kolkata Knight Riders

The Sunil Narine and Phil Salt pair has been sensational for KKR so far. This is even one of the best opening pair of the IPL 2024. Phil Salt has changed his nature due to Narine's batting nature which is causing him some damage but he is a talented batter and is likely to score more important runs for KKR this season. Angkrish Raghuvanshi has delivered well for the side. He is giving stability which is also important. Skipper Shreyas Iyer is not having a good season with the bat and he has made only 91 runs so far in four matches. The skipper has to step up his game and needs to lead from the front.

Venkatesh Iyer, on the other hand, is another one of the biggest flops of this Indian Premier League season. He will have to improve a lot, especially when Nitish Rana is available for selection. Rinku also hasn’t been at his best this season. But, he has shown why KKR must rely on him when it matters with some little cameos. He has also got fewer opportunities as well to bat so he still has a lot of area to improve. The West-Indian sensation Andre Russell is having another solid season with KKR, scoring over 110+ runs and scalping 5 wickets in 4 games which is great for an all-rounder.

Mitchell Starc hasn't justified his price yet. He has picked up only 2 wickets and has leaked a lot of runs. He needs to make a comeback soon or his purchase will be just a huge loss for the franchise. Vaibhav Arora wasn’t the first-choice pacer for KKR as Harshit Rana was ahead in the race. However, Arora has also delivered which the management cannot unsee at this moment. So, it is going to be a good headache for the KKR management. Varun Chakravarthy is having a hot and cold season and has to improve a lot to dominate the opposition in the middle overs otherwise Narine will have to take the responsibility of Varun too which will not be something KKR would want.

Lucknow Super Giants

Skipper KL Rahul wasn't able to convert his good start into a big inning against DC. Rahul has been always consistent in IPL but he is struggling to score runs this season and it is a huge worrying sign for LSG. Quinton de Kock has scored two half-centuries this season but he has failed to replicate those brilliant performances in other games. Devdutt Padikkal is getting opportunities again and again despite contributing nothing to the scoreboard. This could be his last chance as the management may promote Ayush Badoni at no 3 after his impressive performance against Delhi Capitals.

Nicholas Pooran was out for a golden duck against DC but he has been the best batter for LSG this season. The West-Indian sensation can hit big shots in any situation and he is the only one who is doing so for LSG consistently. Ayush Badoni played a fine knock against the Delhi Capitals and showed he has enough potential. The Australian all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis has been in decent form and is one of the most important players for the franchise. He has contributed with runs but hasn't got the opportunity to bowl too much. Krunal Pandya had a poor outing in the last encounter but he has been economical this season and has scored some important runs as well. Arshad Khan has potential as well but he has to improve his bowling otherwise it will be a waste.

LSG’s pace attack consists of Yash Thakur, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Mayank Yadav. Thakur was the hero of LSG in their victory against GT, scalping the maiden fifer of the season. Mayank Yadav is the gem LSG have found this season and he has impressed everyone with his bowling but unfortunately for injury, he missed the last game. As of now, Naveen looks like the weak link in LSG's bowling lineup. He has picked up wickets but at the same time has leaked a ton of runs. The Team India leg-spinner, Ravi Bishnoi bowled a brilliant spell against Delhi Capitals and would be looking to replicate the same at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Major setback for BCCI as Bombay HC orders to pay ₹538 crore to defunct IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala | sportzpoint.com

For years, the Board of Control for Crock in India (BCCI) has navigated various challenges. However a recent coury order is set to have a major financial impact on the sport's governing body.

This ruling revisits a past chapter involving a former IPL team and a long-standing dispute with them. The decision has arrived after a decade of the case, and brings a major setback for BCCI as Bombay HC orders to pay ₹538 crore to defunct IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

Read the full story to know why.

How the BCCI-Kochi Tuskers Kerala dispute began

BCCI authorities, 2025. Image | Facebook

The root of this major legal battle dates back to 2011, when the BCCI terminated the contract of the IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The team, managed by Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL), had only played in one IPL season.

The BCCI claimed they ended the contract because Kochi Tuskers failed to provide a required annual bank guarantee by a deadline in March 2011. This was seen by the BCCI as a serious breach of their agreement.

However, the team owners had a different view. They argued that their delay was due to several issues, including problems with the stadium in Kochi and delays in getting necessary approvals. They also stated that the BCCI continued to deal with them and even accepted payments for months after the March deadline.

The team owners believed this showed the BCCI had waived or overlooked the deadline, making their sudden contract termination unfair.

Taking the matter to arbitration:

Because they felt the termination was wrong, the Kochi Tuskers owners took the matter to arbitration in 2012. An independent tribunal looked at all the facts. In June 2015, this tribunal ruled in favor of Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

The tribunal specifically directed the BCCI to pay ₹384.83 crore to Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) for lost earnings and ₹153.34 crore to Rendezvous Sports World (RSW) for a wrongfully cashed bank guarantee. These amounts also included interest and legal costs.

The Financial Fallout: Why ₹538 crore to be paid now?

Bombay High Court. Image | Wikipedia

The BCCI challenged the 2015 arbitration award in the Bombay High Court, arguing it was unfair and that the damages were too high. However, the recent Bombay HC ruling upheld the original arbitration decision.

This means the BCCI is now legally required to pay a total of over ₹538 crore, including accumulated interest since 2015, to the KTK owners. This represents a major financial loss and a significant legal defeat for the Indian cricket board.

Fans are wondering whether this would come true and change the landscape for both the teams in the future, or is it just another false call.
