TheΒ IPL 2024 came to an end with KKR winning the title. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli wins the Orange Cap list by a fair margin. He was consistent with the bat throughout the season and helped Royal Challenger Bangalore qualify for the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad finished in second place with 583 runs. So, let's look the players with the most runs in IPL 2024 season.

IPL Orange Cap:

The Orange Cap is a prestigious award for a batter who is participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is an award that is given to the highest run-scorer in a particular edition.

Orange Cap History:

  • Shaun Marsh (616 runs in 11 matches in 2008) was the first player to win the award.
  • The record for most runs in a single IPL season is held by Virat Kohli (973 runs in the 2016 edition).
  • David Warner has the record of winning the Orange Cap the most number of times (3).

Rules for Orange Cap:

  • The Orange Cap is awarded to the leading run-scorer of the IPL season.
  • The batsman who holds the Orange Cap during the season is allowed to wear it while in the field during the games, as long as he holds the top-scorer spot in the tournament.
  • In a season where two or more batsmen are tied on runs, the batsman with a better strike rate is awarded the Orange Cap.
  • In a season where an opposition batsman overtakes the tally of the current holder of the Orange Cap, the previous holder is allowed to wear the Cap until the end of that particular innings in which another batsman overtakes him.

List of all Orange Cap Winners:

The first-ever winner of the Orange Cap was Shaun Marsh. He represented the Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) in the inaugural edition of the IPL with 616 runs. The first-ever Indian player to win the Orange Cap award in the IPL is Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary cricketer scored 618 runs in the year 2010.

Chris Gayle is the only player to have won the Orange Cap award on two consecutive occasions. The West Indies' prolific batter emerged as the highest run-scorer in the 2011 and 2012 editions of the IPL. Aussie batter, David Warner has won the Orange Cap award the most number of times (three). The other players who have won the award are Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and KL Rahul.

In the 2021 edition of the IPL, the Orange Cap award was won by Chennai Super Kings (CSK)player Ruturaj Gaikwad. The right-hander scored a mammoth 635 runs in the tournament and scored them at an average of over 45 and a strike rate of 136.27. Jos Buttler won the prestigious award for the first time in IPL 2022 scoring 863 runs at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05. 23-year-old Shubman Gill won the Orange Cap in the 2023 season for scoring 890 runs in 17 matches with an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.8. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli won the IPL 2024 Orange Cap for scoring 741 runs with an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69.

The 2024 was a brilliant season for Virat Kohli with the bat and he finished at the top of the highest run-getter charts in the Indian Premier League. He couldn't take RCB to the Final but did his part with the bat. RCB qualified for the playoffs after making a stupendous comeback, winning all their last six group-stage matches and lots of credit goes to Kohli. But, they got knocked out of the tournament after losing to Rajasthan in the Eliminator.

Virat scored 741 runs at a spectacular average of 61.75 and a great strike rate of 154.69 which includes five half-centuries and one century. He is by far the best batsman of this season and won his second-ever orange cap in the history of the competition.

2. Ruturaj Gaikwad - 583 runs | Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings' captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad had the orange cap for a few matches this season as he was so consistent with his bat. But, he didn't get enough support from the other batters and as a result, CSK didn't qualify for the playoffs. He scored 583 runs this season at an average of 53 and a strike rate of 141.16. Gaikwad scored 4 half-centuries and a century this season and fought alone at the top.Β 

3. Riyan Parag - 573 runs | Rajasthan Royals

It was Riyan Parag's season of redemption. He announced from the first match that he was going to play his best cricket for his side. Riyan didn't have a good season in the 2023 Indian Premier League but he worked hard and improved a lot. When the openers were failing to score runs, he stepped up and took the responsibility. He played some important match-winning knocks to help his side qualify for the playoffs. Riyan Parag scored 573 runs in 14 innings including four half-centuries at a strike rate of 149.21 and an average of 52.09.

4. Travis Head - 567 runs | Sunrisers Hyderabad

Travis HeadΒ has had a spectacular season with Sunrisers Hyderabad and they finished as the runners-up. He and Abhishek Sharma dominated the opposition teams throughout the season after opening the innings. Head scored 567 runs at a strike rate of 191.55 in 15 innings and an average of 40.50. Head scored 4 half-centuries and a century in those 15 innings and played a key role in SRH's qualification. But, he couldn't contribute anything in his last four matches. Head could only score 34 runs in his last four innings which includes three ducks.

5. Sanju Samson - 531 runs | Rajasthan Royals

Sanju Samson led his side to the Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2024 season. He played sensational cricket throughout the season, scoring five half-centuries. Samson led the side from the front and when the team was struggling, he stepped up alongside Riyan Parag. Sanju scored 531 runs in 15 innings at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.46. Rajasthan couldn't qualify for the Final but Samson proved once again that he is a brilliant captain and a batsman.
