Brett Lee - 2007 against Bangladesh
Seventeen years ago in 2007, Brett Lee stunned the world after scalping a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup against Bangladesh. He wrote this history in Cape Town after becoming the first-ever bowler to achieve this feat. This was one of the most exciting and memorable moments from the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup.
Brett Lee came to bowl his second spell at the 17th over and changed the game entirely. Aftab Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan were on the pitch and Shakib was on strike. The batters scored 5 runs from the first two balls and the game started changing from the third ball of the over.
Lee picked up the first wicket by sending Shakib Al Hasan to the pavilion followed by Ashraf Murtaza and Alok Kapali. After this remarkable performance, the Aussie pacer registered history. He is the only bowler with hat tricks in both formats of the World Cup.
Curtis Campher - 2021 against the Netherlands
After so many years of the history made by Brett Lee, Curtis Campher joined the former Australian cricketer in scalping a hat-trick in the T20 Cricket World Cup. Curtis became the first Irish bowler to pick a T20I hat-trick, and the second-ever bowler to take a hat-trick in the T20 Cricket World Cup. He also became the third bowler to take 4 wickets in 4 balls in T20IS.
In the match against the Netherlands, the Ireland pacer picked up 4 wickets in 4 balls in Abu Dhabi. He came to bowl the 10th over and dismissed Colin Ackerman, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards, and Roelof van der Merwe.
Wanindu Hasaranga - 2021 against South Africa
Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga became the only third bowler in history to take a hat-trick in T20 World Cups in the 2021 campaign against South Africa. Hasaranga took wickets in three successive deliveries in Sharjah. Hasaranga removed Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, and Dwayne Pretorious in successive deliveries across overs 15 and 18.
The 24-year-old finished with figures of 4-0-20-3, which dented South Africa's chase of 143 but David Miller pulled his side across the line in the final over.
Kagiso Rabada - 2021 against England
South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada took a hat-trick against England in the Twenty20 World Cup. Rabada dismissed Chris Woakes, skipper Eoin Morgan, and Chris Jordan on successive deliveries of his final over to complete the feat in Sharjah. Rabada finished with figures of 3 for 48, after suffering an expensive first spell but England fell short of the target by 10 runs.
The win was not sufficient for the Proteas to qualify for the semifinals as they lost out to Australia who had a superior net run rate (NRR).
Karthik Meiyappan - 2022 against Sri Lanka
UAE leg spinner Karthik Meiyappan took the first hat-trick of the 2022 T20 Cricket World Cup against Sri Lanka in Geelong. Meiyappan began by removing Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the 15th over. He removed Charith Asalanka in the next delivery and then he completed his hat-trick by dismissing Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka.
Meiyappan also became the first player from an associate team to take a hat-trick against a Test team in men’s World Cups. He finished with figures of 3 for 19 from four overs.
Josh Little - 2022 against New Zealand
Ireland's Joshua Little wrote himself into the history books as he claimed a hat-trick during the Super 12s match against New Zealand. Little claimed the feat in the 19th over and conceded just three runs while picking up the three wickets. He picked up the wickets of Kane Williamson, Jimmy Neesham, and Mitchell Santner to become the second Irish bowler after Curtis Campher to pick up a hat-trick in the tournament.
Pat Cummins - 2024 against Bangladesh
Pat Cummins became the seventh overall and second Australian to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup history. In a super-8 game vs Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024, the Aussie pacer first cleaned up Mahmumdullah's stumps and then dismissed Mahedi Hasan in the last two balls of the 17th over. Then in the first ball of the 18th over he sent back Towhid Hridoy back to the dressing room for his hat-trick.
