Virat Kohli is the latest 'deepfake' victim as a viral video of the former Indian skipper falsely showed him promoting a betting app. The AI-generated clip went viral in a couple of hours and the fans were in total confusion after watching that clip.

Recently, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also raised concerns after a fake video featuring the cricket legend was promoting a gaming app. The Mumbai police registered a case against a gaming site and the Facebook page promoting the gaming app.

The AI-generated clip of Kohli was shared on social media and it went viral. The deepfake video was shared to create the impression that the legendary cricketer is supporting the winning percentage of the online game. Deepfake technology was used to mimic Kohli's gestures and voice from an old interview. Later it was also addressed in several news channels.

On Thursday, The God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar also addressed a deepfake video on X (formerly known as Twitter).

"These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report videos, ads & apps like these in large numbers. Social Media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfakes."

Since the advancement in Artificial Intelligence, several deepfake videos of celebrities have emerged on social media. The Indian government is planning new regulations imposing penalties on both creator and platform hosting deep fakes. The IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishaw described it as "a threat to democracy".

Several celebrities reported their faces are getting manipulated onto another video which is concerning and can get used in so many wrong ways.

"Deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. These (can) weaken trust in society and its institutions," Vaishnaw said after meeting with various stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom, and other professors from the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
